Was Jennifer Lawrence always meant to be Katniss?
Speaking to Teen Vogue, Zane said the choice was less about fame and more about instinct. 'It's hard to explain. It's gut instinct,' she shared. Lawrence had just earned serious critical acclaim for Winter's Bone, with Oscar buzz swirling around her name, but Zane wasn't impressed by hype alone. 'She just was Katniss,' she explained, adding that casting is often about finding the most emotionally layered performance, even when it's unexpected. 'That's the most exciting part, when someone exceeds what you imagined.'
Zane's longtime casting partner, Dylan Jury, also reflected on the process behind Sunrise on the Reaping, the newest instalment in the franchise. Unlike previous films, this one was cast while the book was still being written. 'That made it very crazy and challenging for different reasons,' Jury said.
Fan buzz has been especially strong around Maya Hawke's casting as Wiress, which Zane proudly called a perfect match. As for Whitney Peak, cast as Lenore Dove, it was her chemistry with co-star Joe that sealed the deal. A test shoot captured on an iPhone gave Zane a sudden, intuitive certainty. 'We were shooting them on an iPhone and Dylan was operating the iPhone and I was peeking over his shoulder into the screen and could just… it was really like, Oof. You know?!'
Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before the original story and features a star-studded cast including Ralph Fiennes, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, and Glenn Close. It premieres on 20 November 2026.

Jeremy Renner discusses near-death experience as Whoopi Goldberg recalls Ghost
Jeremy Renner appeared on the May 1, 2025, episode of The View (re-aired on August 5) to discuss his memoir My Next Breath and reflect on the snow plow accident that nearly took his life on New Year's Day in 2023. The conversation took an emotional turn when co-host Whoopi Goldberg drew a connection between Renner's experience and the 1990 film Ghost, in which she starred. Renner was critically injured while trying to prevent a 14,000-pound snow plow from hitting his nephew. The incident left him with more than 30 broken bones and led to a profound reflection on life and mortality. During the conversation, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked him about what he remembered from the moments he described as dying. 'It's always kind of tough to talk about,' Renner said. 'But I realize that, in time, there are so many shared experiences that people have when they have a near-death experience… it's quite beautiful.' Renner explained that he believes love is the only thing that carries over beyond life. 'Love is the only thing that you take with you… it's the DNA of our spirit,' he shared. 'Hate can't exist [there]—it only exists on the coattails of love.' Goldberg responded by referencing Ghost, the Oscar-winning film that earned her Best Supporting Actress at the 1991 Academy Awards. She noted the film's final message—that love continues beyond death—echoes Renner's insight. 'That's the movie Ghost… you take it with you,' she told him. Renner agreed, saying, 'It's not just a movie, no.' The episode was re-aired on August 5 during The View's summer hiatus, which runs from July 28 to September 2, 2025. The show regularly airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.

MrBeast outlines plans for real-life Hunger Games-style challenge with $1 million prize
MrBeast has revealed he is planning a real-life competition inspired by The Hunger Games, with a $1 million prize on the line. Known for his large-scale YouTube challenges, the creator has been exploring the logistics of hosting a survival-style event that remains safe for participants. The concept, shared during an interview, involves selecting 26 people and placing them on an island where they would compete using simulated combat methods like laser tag. The competition would continue until one individual remains, who would win the $1 million prize. 'I've been sitting on this idea where it'd be fun to grab potentially 26 random people, put them on an island, and – not use real weapons, maybe like laser tag or something – and then the last remaining one wins a million dollars to recreate Hunger Games in real life. I think that'd absolutely crush,' MrBeast said. The idea follows the success of Beast Games, which featured over 1,000 contestants and broke Amazon Prime viewership records. MrBeast has consistently run high-stakes challenges involving isolation and endurance, making the proposed concept a natural progression for his content. While no official timeline has been confirmed, MrBeast hinted that the idea could either be realised as a full-scale production or adapted for his animated series if necessary.

USDA uses 'Marriage Story' fight scene to deter wolves in cattle protection effort
A new report from The Wall Street Journal has revealed an unexpected use for Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story: wolf deterrence. The United States Department of Agriculture is using audio from the film's most intense fight scene, featuring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, to scare off wolves and protect livestock. According to the report, drones equipped with thermal cameras and loudspeakers patrol areas like Oregon's Klamath Basin. These drones broadcast a variety of alarming sounds, including fireworks, gunshots, and people arguing. Among the recordings is the heated exchange between Johansson and Driver in the 2019 drama, which earned both actors Oscar nominations. 'I need the wolves to respond and know that, hey, humans are bad,' said a USDA district supervisor. The method, known as 'wolf hazing,' combines audio deterrents with drone surveillance to reduce livestock attacks without harming the animals. The practice was introduced after 11 cattle deaths occurred in just 20 days in southern Oregon. In the 85 days following the drone deployment, only two deaths were reported. Other deterrents used include rock music like AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck,' reinforcing the strategy's reliance on unpredictable, human-made noise. Marriage Story depicts a bitter divorce and custody battle, and its raw emotional performances have proven useful in an entirely different setting than originally intended.
