Noel Clarke's Defamation Case Against The Guardian Begins, Actor Says He's Victim Of 'Unlawful Conspiracy'

Noel Clarke's Defamation Case Against The Guardian Begins, Actor Says He's Victim Of 'Unlawful Conspiracy'

Yahoo07-03-2025

Lawyers for filmmaker Noel Clarke told a court today that The Guardian newspaper acted as the 'judge, jury, and executioner' of the Kidulthood filmmaker's career when they published a series of articles in which he was accused of various incidents of misconduct.
In written submissions to the court, according to the BBC, Clarke's lawyers said claims that he was a 'serial abuser of women' were false, and that he was the victim of an 'unlawful conspiracy.'

Guardian News and Media told the court that its reporting was accurate and in the public interest, the BBC reported. Lawyers for the newspaper also described Clarke's conspiracy claim as a 'wild allegation'.
The Guardian published multiple articles in which Clarke was accused of various incidents of misconduct by 20 women between 2004 and 2019.
The actor, producer, and director, best known for work such as Kidulthood and its two follow-up movies, has denied all of the allegations and said the articles have had a 'catastrophic' effect on his career.
'A sexual predator is not a womanizer, or someone who has had an extramarital affair, or a flirt, or a man who looks for mutually beneficial opportunities for sexual intercourse,' Clarke's lawyers said in court today.
'Mr. Clarke is absolutely not, and never has been, a sexual predator. The Guardian has got it plum wrong.'
According to PA, Clarke's lawyer continued: 'The Guardian acted like archaeologists, and tried to dig up the past. They came up with a story that had more holes than a colander.'
Clarke is said to be looking for damages of around $12m (£10m) in the defamation suit. Alongside claiming general damages for reputational harm, Clarke is looking for damages that cover specific financial losses. Clarke's claim says The Guardian's articles had a 'devastating' impact on his finances, according to the BBC, with the actor claiming 'every existing or upcoming contract' he had was canceled following The Guardian's reports.
Clarke's claim says he has 'not had one single work contract' since the first Guardian article about him was published in April 2021. Clarke is claiming aggravated damages for what his lawyers describe as the 'relentless, targeted, vicious and persistent nature of the wholly unjustified defamatory campaign' mounted against him by the Guardian.

'Bridgerton''s Genevieve Chenneour Breaks Her Silence on 'Life-Changing' London Robbery, Recalls 'Battle' of 'Life and Death'

Genevieve Chenneour has spoken out four months after she was the victim of an attempted robbery in a London coffee shop On ITV's This Morning, the 27-year-old actress revealed she was "threatened with being stabbed, so it became a real battle of, in my mind, life and death" The suspect was later identified as 18-year-old Zacariah Boulares, who is currently facing theft and assault chargesBridgerton actress Genevieve Chenneour is speaking out months after her phone was stolen and her life was threatened in a London coffee shop. Chenneour was in a Joe & the Juice in London in February when her phone was stolen off the table behind her and she pursued the robber to get it back, according to footage obtained by BBC. The 27-year-old actress, who played Clara Livingston in season 3 of the hit Netflix series, said that the altercation became a matter of "life and death" in her mind during a June 12 interview on ITV's This Morning. On the morning show, Chenneour said she was "shocked" when she first saw the surveillance camera footage from inside the cafe of the attack. "I didn't even remember my reaction and I thought it was way longer than it actually was. That moment before anything happened, I thought it was about 20 seconds, but it was milliseconds," she recalled. She said that had 'a bit of a sixth sense that something wasn't quite right" in the moments before the suspect — who was identified as 18-year-old Zacariah Boulares and is expected to be sentenced over theft and assault charges at Isleworth Crown Court on June 17, per the BBC — attempted the robbery. "As a woman you have that kind of intuition, and I could feel people moving around me in a different way, but I only became aware of it once the incident had happened, in hindsight," she said of her quick reaction to the theft. "But I did feel — they were going back and forth trying to find a target,' she added. In the surveillance footage, Chenneour reacted quickly to Boulares' theft, spinning around and trying to get the phone back from him while another customer helped her. She said on This Morning that there was "about five minutes" of an altercation that followed "and it turned into a full-on scrap with two people." "I was threatened with being stabbed, so it became a real battle of, in my mind, life and death. So I did things, like, I remember kicking him back with my leg to create space in case he had a weapon on him," she recalled. "It was just a life-changing, crazy moment.' Given the incident happened in February, she said it has lasting consequences for her, as it "made me quite agoraphobic." "Leaving the house was quite hard," she admitted. When asked what made her instantly react and fight back after she noticed her phone was taken, the actress said she has "very quick reactions thanks to having three brothers growing up," and also revealed that she's trained in boxing, which helped too. "I don't know what came over me. I thought that was a normal reaction," she said. "And then I read all the comments and realized, actually, a lot of people would just let them take the phone." 'I loved the 90s. Take me back' star of BBC comedy set ....in the 90s

Star and co-writer of BBC comedy Power of Parker simply loved the 90s. Sian Gibson is back as Kath in series 2 of the series, set in the 1990s. She said: "I loved the 90s. Take me back." In series 2, Kath, Martin and her sister Diane are all trying their best to get along. Martin (Conleth Hill) is down on his luck, Diane is running Parker's with Sandy Copper (Steve Pemberton) and Kath just wants everyone to be happy. But Kath's constant interfering changes all of their lives forever. They'll need to depend on each other now more than ever, but who do they trust? This is what Sian, the star of Car Share with Bolton's Peter Kay has to say about series 2, now showing on BBC and iPlayer Tell us where we pick up with Kath in Series 2? The series is set two years later in 1992 and Kath thinks she has exactly what she always wanted in life. She's living with Martin and finally has her man to herself, and she's also rekindled her relationship with her sister, Diane. She should be living the dream, but instead she's worried that Martin has 'lost his sparkle' now he's not the boss of his own electrical store, and she is still feeling guilty for betraying Diane. There's a power shift between Martin and Diane, and Kath feels stuck in the middle of them both. Kath thinks if she can sort out Martin and Diane's problems then everyone will be happy, and they can all live happily ever after. Unfortunately, her interfering doesn't go to plan and she manages to make everything worse, throwing them all into chaos. How has Kath's relationship with Martin and Diane changed since Series 1? Kath and Diane have put their differences behind them and are getting to know each other again and actually getting on! Kath wants to make it up to Diane for having an affair with her husband. (So yeah, she has a lot of making up to do! ) Kath has never really stood up for herself but she won't let anyone hurt her sister and will happily stand up for Diane whatever the cost. This is all much to the annoyance of Martin who hates his girlfriend being mates with his ex wife, meaning Kath is having to sneak around behind his back to see Diane. Kath and Martin are scraping a living on Kath's wage, but Kath has never been money motivated and loves that she now has Martin all to herself with their relationship now out in the open. Kath senses that Martin isn't happy with his new arrangement and does what she can to try and make him happy. Kath has always been the eternal optimist and just wants her happy ending, but the cracks are starting to show now and she is questioning her life choices and who she can trust. READ MORE: 'I'd turn the whole internet off': Star of The Power of Parker as it airs TONIGHT BBC comedy The Power of Parker recap and ending explained ahead of series 2 Everything to know as BBC comedy The Power of Parker returns for series 2 Do you have a favourite moment from filming? This is a massive cliche, but we have such an amazing cast, crew and production team that every day was such a laugh. I feel very lucky to work with such lovely people - I can't really call it work! What can we expect from Kath in this series? It's a rollercoaster for Kath in this series, she's all over the place. In her quest to put everything right for everyone else, she has a fight at a party, gets into trouble with her dad, leans on her old friends for advice and meets a blast from her past. She's got a lot going on this series! How was the writing process for this series? Did you always know you wanted to take the characters in a new direction? Paul and I love writing this series, we know each other so well and know what will make each other laugh which is usually spending our days stuck down a YouTube rabbit hole watching early 90s Top Of the Pops episodes. Knowing the characters more this time really helped, and we knew we had to raise the stakes for the characters and increase the jeopardy. We've also added some new characters, Mic and Ash, played by Diane Morgan and Navin Chowdhry who are both fabulous and take the series in a completely new direction. Do you have a favourite outfit from Series 2? Our costume team were fantastic, and all the costumes and accessories were vintage from 1992 and earlier. Kath wears a particularly fabulous red dress in one episode but let's just say there's a lot of lycra and a lot of Spanx were used in the making of this series. What were you doing in 1992? I was starting my A-Levels in 1992. The world was my oyster. I was a wannabe goth, with dyed cherry red hair, Doc Martins and an array of band t-shirts like The Cure, The Smiths and Pearl Jam. I was using fake ID to go to Indie Nights at the local nightclub but in reality, I liked nothing better than wearing sequins and dancing to show tunes in my bedroom. What's one thing from 1992 you'd like to bring to the present day? I can't name just one thing. T'Pau, Quantum Leap, Body Shop's Dewberry Oil.. I loved the 90s. Take me back.

Emmys 2025: Lead Actress in a Drama Series — Our Dream Nominees!

Much like the Drama Series field, the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category is primed for the most extreme of makeovers at this year's Emmys. None of 2024's Lead Actress contenders will be back in the running in 2025, although Carrie Coon — nominated here last year for The Gilded Age — is expected to get some love in the Supporting Actress race for her turn in Season 3 of The White Lotus. Scroll down for links to our previous Dream Emmy categories: Outstanding Drama Series — Our Dream Nominees Who She Plays: Polarizing trust fund baby Yasmin Kara-Hanani Her Best Performance This Season: 'Nikki Beach, or: So Many Ways to Lose' (Season 3, Episode 6) What We Thought About It: 'Abela was shellshocked as Yas confessed to Harper that she froze after her father's fateful deep-sea plunge. Through a catatonic expression and tears, the actress flooded our screens with grief and fear as Harper scurried to pick up her shattered pieces. … Later, [Abela and co-star Myha'la] delivered a masterclass back-and-forth, unloading long-held resentments with a relationship-busting finality. Myha'la and Abela's deliveries were pitch-perfect verbal beatdowns, as both performers showcased deep-seated pain through hurt eyes.' [Performer of the Week winner, Sept. 21, 2024] Who She Plays: Jacobson Moore associate Madeline 'Matty' Matlock Her Best Performance This Season: 'I Was That, Too' (Season 1, Episode 17) What We Thought About It: 'Bates, as the suddenly compromised Madeline, had a fine line of her own to walk. Yes, Matty was devastated at the thought of exploding her unexpected friendship with Olympia, but she also was first and foremost a woman on a mission. So as much as Olympia might call Matty out for this lie or the other, Bates was sure to surface her character's own righteous indignation, about Jacobson Moore's crimes, as well as register her broken heart.' [Performer of the Week winner, April 12, 2025] Who She Plays: Severed Lumon employee Helly R. / Lumon bigwig Helena Eagan Her Best Performance This Season: 'Trojan's Horse' (Season 2, Episode 5) What We Thought About It: 'Helly couldn't be more different from her Outie alter ego Helena, but Lower managed to convincingly inhabit both of them. First, she just about chilled our blood as Helena refused to go back inside Lumon, calling the Innies 'f—king animals.' Then her confusion was heartbreaking when Helly finally reunited with her Lumon friends, only to have them not trust her at all. … In Lower's hands, Helly and Helena really feel like they're played by two different actors, and that's the ultimate compliment we can pay to her Season 2 performance.' [Performer of the Week Honorable Mention, Feb. 15, 2025] Who She Plays: Dystopian rebel leader June Osborne Her Best Performance This Season: 'The Handmaid's Tale' (Season 6, Episode 10) What We Thought About It: 'The emotional armor with which Moss fortified her character was considerable — and even more striking when it fell away, as it did in the scenes with June's baby daughter, Nichole, and her mom, Holly. … It was the most vulnerable we'd seen June in a long time, and Moss was absolutely stunning. And we'd be remiss not to highlight the serenity Moss imbued in June as the hour came to a close and her story began anew. Here was a character who'd endured unimaginable suffering but emerged stronger, played by an actress at the top of her craft.' [Performer of the Week winner, May 31, 2025] Who She Plays: Cutthroat prosecutor Merritt Lingard Her Best Performance This Season: 'Episode 9' (Season 1, Episode 9) What We Thought About It: 'Two moments — both of which found the actress uttering nary a syllable — stand out. First there was [Merritt's] wordless reunion with younger brother William following her brutal four-year captivity, during which Pirrie — using just her eyes — infused Merritt's aura of emptiness and despair with hope and relief upon seeing her healthy, smiling sibling. Later, when the sight of the elaborate tracking board detectives used to find her literally took Merritt's breath away, Pirrie ensured that audiences felt the full weight of the discovery that, yes, the young solicitor's life mattered — if not to her, than to Carl and his fellow scoobies.' [Performer of the Week winner, June 7, 2025] Who They Play: Zombie apocalypse survivor Ellie Williams Their Best Performance This Season: 'Through the Valley' (Season 2, Episode 2) What We Thought About It: 'Joel's death would've been sad under any circumstances, full stop. But what really made his final moments stick with us… was how Ramsey played Ellie's reaction to finding her surrogate father near death. … The fear in Ramsey's eyes crystallized to horror as Ellie took in Joel's broken body, their voice breaking a little more each time Ellie demanded that Joel get up … We also won't soon forget the way Ramsey pulled Ellie over to Joel's prone body, belly-crawling with everything she had left in order to be close to him.' [Performer of the Week winner, April 26, 2025] Who She Plays: U.S. diplomat Kate Wyler Her Best Performance This Season: 'St. Paul's' (Season 2, Episode 2) What We Thought About It: 'When [Rufus Sewell's] Hal posited to his wife that tragedies like the one that claimed the life of Kate's aide, Ronnie, are — in their dangerous line of work — merely 'the cost of doing business,' Russell pivoted seamlessly between unbridled fury at her husband and profound grief over the loss of her beloved colleague. … Watching Russell and Sewell navigate the argument's fluctuating emotional beats and power dynamics — from anger to empathy to condescension and back to anger — was akin to witnessing a world champion chess match.' [Performer of the Week Honorable Mention, Nov. 2, 2024] Who She Plays: Lioness station chief Joe McNamara Her Best Performance This Season: 'I Love My Country' (Season 2, Episode 2) What We Thought About It: 'Saldaña's showstopper scenes came once Joe and her team arrived at the Army's FOB in Iraq, after barely surviving an ambush. The dialogue seemed to be half expletives, but it was Saldaña's delivery of the words that put everyone within earshot on guard. … Closing out Saldaña's winning performance was Joe's subsequent pitch to [Genesis Rodriguez's] Josie, where she laid out the prospective Lioness' ties to the the cartel in the Agency's crosshairs, then simply asked, again and again, 'Do you love your country?' When Josie maintained, 'I am serving my country right now,' Joe said, 'Your country needs more.' And because of Saldaña's intensity, you knew that she would get it.'
