Noel Clarke's Defamation Case Against The Guardian Begins, Actor Says He's Victim Of 'Unlawful Conspiracy'
Lawyers for filmmaker Noel Clarke told a court today that The Guardian newspaper acted as the 'judge, jury, and executioner' of the Kidulthood filmmaker's career when they published a series of articles in which he was accused of various incidents of misconduct.
In written submissions to the court, according to the BBC, Clarke's lawyers said claims that he was a 'serial abuser of women' were false, and that he was the victim of an 'unlawful conspiracy.'

Guardian News and Media told the court that its reporting was accurate and in the public interest, the BBC reported. Lawyers for the newspaper also described Clarke's conspiracy claim as a 'wild allegation'.
The Guardian published multiple articles in which Clarke was accused of various incidents of misconduct by 20 women between 2004 and 2019.
The actor, producer, and director, best known for work such as Kidulthood and its two follow-up movies, has denied all of the allegations and said the articles have had a 'catastrophic' effect on his career.
'A sexual predator is not a womanizer, or someone who has had an extramarital affair, or a flirt, or a man who looks for mutually beneficial opportunities for sexual intercourse,' Clarke's lawyers said in court today.
'Mr. Clarke is absolutely not, and never has been, a sexual predator. The Guardian has got it plum wrong.'
According to PA, Clarke's lawyer continued: 'The Guardian acted like archaeologists, and tried to dig up the past. They came up with a story that had more holes than a colander.'
Clarke is said to be looking for damages of around $12m (£10m) in the defamation suit. Alongside claiming general damages for reputational harm, Clarke is looking for damages that cover specific financial losses. Clarke's claim says The Guardian's articles had a 'devastating' impact on his finances, according to the BBC, with the actor claiming 'every existing or upcoming contract' he had was canceled following The Guardian's reports.
Clarke's claim says he has 'not had one single work contract' since the first Guardian article about him was published in April 2021. Clarke is claiming aggravated damages for what his lawyers describe as the 'relentless, targeted, vicious and persistent nature of the wholly unjustified defamatory campaign' mounted against him by the Guardian.

'Bridgerton''s Genevieve Chenneour Breaks Her Silence on 'Life-Changing' London Robbery, Recalls 'Battle' of 'Life and Death'

Chenneour was in a Joe & the Juice in London in February when her phone was stolen off the table behind her and she pursued the robber to get it back, according to footage obtained by BBC. The 27-year-old actress, who played Clara Livingston in season 3 of the hit Netflix series, said that the altercation became a matter of "life and death" in her mind during a June 12 interview on ITV's This Morning. On the morning show, Chenneour said she was "shocked" when she first saw the surveillance camera footage from inside the cafe of the attack. "I didn't even remember my reaction and I thought it was way longer than it actually was. That moment before anything happened, I thought it was about 20 seconds, but it was milliseconds," she recalled. She said that had 'a bit of a sixth sense that something wasn't quite right" in the moments before the suspect — who was identified as 18-year-old Zacariah Boulares and is expected to be sentenced over theft and assault charges at Isleworth Crown Court on June 17, per the BBC — attempted the robbery. "As a woman you have that kind of intuition, and I could feel people moving around me in a different way, but I only became aware of it once the incident had happened, in hindsight," she said of her quick reaction to the theft. "But I did feel — they were going back and forth trying to find a target,' she added. In the surveillance footage, Chenneour reacted quickly to Boulares' theft, spinning around and trying to get the phone back from him while another customer helped her. She said on This Morning that there was "about five minutes" of an altercation that followed "and it turned into a full-on scrap with two people." "I was threatened with being stabbed, so it became a real battle of, in my mind, life and death. So I did things, like, I remember kicking him back with my leg to create space in case he had a weapon on him," she recalled. "It was just a life-changing, crazy moment.' Given the incident happened in February, she said it has lasting consequences for her, as it "made me quite agoraphobic." "Leaving the house was quite hard," she admitted. When asked what made her instantly react and fight back after she noticed her phone was taken, the actress said she has "very quick reactions thanks to having three brothers growing up," and also revealed that she's trained in boxing, which helped too. "I don't know what came over me. I thought that was a normal reaction," she said. "And then I read all the comments and realized, actually, a lot of people would just let them take the phone." In her quest to put everything right for everyone else, she has a fight at a party, gets into trouble with her dad, leans on her old friends for advice and meets a blast from her past. She's got a lot going on this series! How was the writing process for this series? Did you always know you wanted to take the characters in a new direction? Paul and I love writing this series, we know each other so well and know what will make each other laugh which is usually spending our days stuck down a YouTube rabbit hole watching early 90s Top Of the Pops episodes. Knowing the characters more this time really helped, and we knew we had to raise the stakes for the characters and increase the jeopardy. We've also added some new characters, Mic and Ash, played by Diane Morgan and Navin Chowdhry who are both fabulous and take the series in a completely new direction. Do you have a favourite outfit from Series 2? Our costume team were fantastic, and all the costumes and accessories were vintage from 1992 and earlier. Kath wears a particularly fabulous red dress in one episode but let's just say there's a lot of lycra and a lot of Spanx were used in the making of this series. What were you doing in 1992? I was starting my A-Levels in 1992. The world was my oyster. I was a wannabe goth, with dyed cherry red hair, Doc Martins and an array of band t-shirts like The Cure, The Smiths and Pearl Jam. I was using fake ID to go to Indie Nights at the local nightclub but in reality, I liked nothing better than wearing sequins and dancing to show tunes in my bedroom. What's one thing from 1992 you'd like to bring to the present day? I can't name just one thing. T'Pau, Quantum Leap, Body Shop's Dewberry Oil.. I loved the 90s. Take me back.
