Mitchell Patch, an elementary school math teacher, was walking across Baymeadows Road with his son, Everett, when they were hit by a Honda Civic traveling eastbound at 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday, May 16. Emergency responders pronounced the father and child dead at the scene, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said in a statement. The driver of the car was taken to a local hospital and is cooperating with officials. Officer Max Morel confirmed the names of the father and son and told PEOPLE the investigation is ongoing.
'Our hearts are with the family and friends of the man and his child,' the sheriff's office said in the statement.
Duval County Public Schools, Patch's employer, and the City of Jacksonville Medical Examiner's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.
That evening, Patch attended a party at a restaurant. He was holding his toddler in his arms when he crossed the road, Morel confirmed.
'We were in the middle of a rush when it happened. Next thing you know, we just started seeing flashing lights. It started getting bigger. So we kind of figured something more intense happened,' Dylan Williams, manager at Wicked Barley Brewing Company, told local outlet WJXT.
'We had a large group of family members mourning,' he added. 'It was very tragic.'
The fatal accident has renewed safety concerns for residents in the area, the outlet reported.
For Patch's wife, Mary, it's an 'unimaginable' tragedy, her employer wrote in a GoFundMe created to cover funeral expenses. As of Wednesday, May 23, the page has raised more than $120,000, close to its $125,000 goal. The organizer did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
'This devastating loss has left her and her family heartbroken,' the employer wrote of the death of Mitchell and their son, who is identified as Everett.
Bayview Elementary, where Mitchell worked, sent a message to the school's families from Principal Kelly York the day after the accident.

'Our sympathies go out to Mr. Patch's family, friends and our entire school community during this difficult time.'
She added, 'I am deeply saddened, and I know the students, staff and family members who knew Mr. Patch will miss him tremendously."

Bloomfield officer shot during traffic stop dies

Jun. 1—A Bloomfield police officer has died, less than a week after being shot during a traffic stop. At about 10:55 p.m., May 26, Timothy Ontiveros, 32, pulled over Dennis Armenta, 58, for a traffic violation. Armenta refused to roll down his window or provide identification to Ontiveros, Bloomfield Police Department Chief Phillip Francisco said. After over eight minutes of negotiation, Armenta continued to refuse to comply. Officers decided to arrest him for concealing his identity, Francisco said. Armenta was inside his locked car with the windows up, prompting officers to break a window to take him into custody. At that point, Armenta opened fire with a handgun, "hitting Ontiveros and narrowly missing a second officer at the scene," Francisco said. Ontiveros was taken to multiple hospitals before dying in Albuquerque Sunday, he said Sunday. "Officer Ontiveros was a valued member of the Bloomfield Police Department," Francisco said. "In his short time with the agency, he demonstrated kindness, professionalism, and dedication to the safety of the community he served. Ontiveros had been with the Bloomfield Police Department since December. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Aztec Fire Department. He previously worked for Farmington police. "We are grieving his loss and ask for your prayers and support for the family of Officer Ontiveros and the Bloomfield Police Department as we navigate this tremendous loss," Francisco said. A GoFundMe page was set up to support Ontiveros' family. On the page, family friend Heather Eckhoff described Ontiveros as having a "heart of gold" who loved serving and protecting his community. "I extend my deepest condolences to Officer Ontiveros's family, friends, and fellow officers," Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement. "Today, all New Mexicans honor his life, his service, and the sacrifice he made to keep others safe." Funeral arrangements have not been set, Francisco said.

A Man Was Allegedly Injured on a Disney World Water Slide While 34 Lbs. Over Ride Weight Limit. Now, He's Suing the Park

Eugene Strickland is accusing Walt Disney World of negligence and seeking more than $50,000 in damages, according to a complaint filed on May 29 Strickland sustained an injury on the Downhill Double Dipper water slide at the resort's Blizzard Beach park during a July 2021 visit, he claims in the complaint At the time of the incident, he was approximately 34 lbs. over the attraction's 300 lb. weight limitA man is accusing Walt Disney World of negligence and suing for damages, claiming he sustained enduring injuries on a park water slide. Eugene Strickland filed a complaint against the theme park on Thursday, May 29. He is seeking more than $50,000 in damages for the incident, which occurred at the Blizzard Beach water park in Bay Lake, Fla., and allegedly left him with injuries he is still dealing with nearly four years later. While riding the Downhill Double Dipper during a July 2021 park visit, Strickland 'became momentarily airborne" and suffered 'permanent catastrophic injuries as a result,' according to the newly filed complaint. At the time, Strickland weighed approximately 334 lbs., which surpassed the stated weight limit of the ride, which was 300 lbs., the complaint states. It is not clear in the complaint whether he was aware of the limit before entering the slide. While on the water slide — which the Walt Disney World website describes as 'side-by-side high-speed slides' — Strickland caught air thanks to the attraction's design and 'exhilarating speeds,' the complaint states. This allegedly caused his inner tube to dislodge from beneath him and made him 'land with force onto the hard plastic surface of the slide." As a result, Strickland claims he 'suffered serious bodily injury and resulting pain and suffering, disability, scarring, disfigurement, mental anguish, loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life,' according to the complaint. Strickland argues that Walt Disney World was negligent and failed to maintain safe premises. He also claims that the theme park was aware of the 'safety hazard' and 'concealed trap' that led to his injuries. The park, the complaint claims, had a responsibility to remedy — or least warn him of — the 'dangerous conditions' of the attraction. The case is scheduled for a jury trial beginning in May 2027, according to court documents viewed by PEOPLE. Strickland's attorney, Alberto Oliveri, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Sunday, June 1, nor did a spokesperson for Walt Disney World.
