Presidency slams DA over claims Mcebisi Jonas was denied US visa
President Cyril Ramaphosa's office has cautioned South Africans against treating the DA's 'disinformation on matters of international relations and diplomacy' as official government policy.
This comes after DA spokesperson on International Relations and Cooperation, Emma Louise Powell, claimed on Tuesday that the United States (US) had denied South Africa's special envoy, Mcebisi Jonas, a diplomatic visa.
'In an extraordinary turn of events, the Democratic Alliance can reveal that President Cyril Ramaphosa has, for months, been fully aware that his 'Special Envoy' is not welcome in Washington D.C.
'The US government has formally rejected Jonas's credentials and has informed the Presidency that he would not be recognised as South Africa's official interlocutor,' Powell claimed.
'Sensationalism'
Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the DA is seeking to add 'sensationalism to its claim.'
'The Democratic Alliance's latest effort to embarrass President Ramaphosa's Special Envoy to North America, Mr Jonas Mcebisi, involves claims – in the DA's framing – that the United States has rejected Mr Jonas' 'credentials' and that Mr Jonas is therefore unable to perform his role as Special Envoy,' Magwenya said.
'The DA seeks to add sensationalism to its claim by suggesting President Ramaphosa and Mr Jonas face a crisis in view of the United States' pending implementation of trade tariffs announced several days ago by President Donald Trump.
'The facts around this matter include the reality that Special Envoys do not present diplomatic credentials to host countries in the way designated Heads of Mission or other diplomats are,' Magwenya said.

'Envoys'
According to Magwenya, envoys are not required to account publicly for the work they undertake.
'The Presidency is therefore concerned about the Democratic Alliance's persistent campaign against South Africa's national interest and its posture of trying to embarrass and belittle our country and in this specific circumstance, Mr Jonas.
'This campaign has its origins in a Democratic Alliance visit to the United States earlier this year, to advance an ideological agenda rather than our national interest,' Magwenya said.
'Right-wing nexus'
Magwenya added that the DA has positioned itself as part of a 'right-wing nexus' that seeks to use a foreign state to 'effect changes to democratically developed national policies in our own country.'
'The DA is trying cheaply but dangerously to exploit a critical engagement between South Africa and the United States to protest President Ramaphosa's removal of Mr Andrew Whitfield as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition,' Magwenya said.
'The DA's pronouncements and insults against countries and international organisations, such as the Republic of Cuba or the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, offend South Africa's international relations and posture.

'If the DA were to succeed in undermining South Africa's relations with various nations or institutions, the party will harm the viability of businesses and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of South Africans who work in sectors that depend on the expansion of our trade relations with the world,' Magwenya said.
Magwenya said Jonas's outreach does not in any way supersede the leading role played by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) in South Africa's 'difficult but constructive trade negotiations with the United States, or in our diplomatic relations with this longstanding partner.'
Jonas's appointment
Ramaphosa announced the appointment of Jonas as the Special Envoy to the US in April.
Jonas' appointment as special envoy followed the expulsion of the former South African ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool.
Rasool returned to South Africa in March after the US Secretary of State revoked his diplomatic privileges.
He was declared persona non grata and given just a week to leave the US due to comments he made about the country and the Donald Trump administration during a webinar.
At the time, Ramaphosa said Jonas would serve as the official representative of the president and the government of South Africa.

Two men arrested in connection with KwaZulu-Natal political killings

Their arrests came just two days after the unit arrested a former Municipal Manager in connection with the killing of the former ANC Youth League Secretary General, Sindiso Magaqa. One of the suspects arrested in the Ndlovu matter was Amanxamalala Traditional Authority's Inkosi Simphiwe Zuma, who is related to the former and current Umkhonto WeSizwe party President Jacob Zuma. Zuma was arrested alongside Thabo Mathonsi-Chonco. Both Zuma and Mathonsi-Chonco were out on bail for a separate murder case. Although the latest charges against Inkosi Zuma remain unclear, Mathonsi-Chonco was accused of conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of Ndlovu on December 23, 2023. Mashatile fined R10,000 over Liebenberg diamond gift to wife
Deputy President Paul Mashatile has been fined R10,000 for failing to declare a diamond gift his wife Humile received from a controversial businessman Louis Liebenberg in 2023. Mashatile said at the time that the gift was unsolicited and that his wife would take the precious stone back. This could now see Mashatile being the first sitting deputy president to suffer the public humiliation of being rebuked by the National Assembly for his questionable ethical conduct. Parliament's joint committee on ethics and members' interests has recommended that the National Assembly reprimands Mashatile and imposes a R10,000 fine on him 'for his failure to declare a gift to his wife in the confidential part of his financial and registrable interests register'. The fine comes in the wake of a controversy about a Constantia mansion, on the slopes of the Table Mountain, that Mashatile declared in parliament last Friday. Reports suggested that Mashatile had declared the almost R30m house as his own, but he has since said all he did was to declare the palatial retreat as the place he lived whenever he was in Cape Town. Mashatile maintained that the mansion was a family home bought by his son-in-law. 'Look, people must read. That's just one of the first things you must learn in life. There's nothing in parliament that I said a house (in Constantia). I said I live there. That house is owned by my son I law. It's a very simple thing to read, so what's the problem?' Mashatile told the SABC on Thursday. 'I don't use government money, there's no government money in those houses, so what are you looking for, there's no government money in that house, so I don't know what's your problem. It's a private home; it's owned by the family ... so how does government come in?' The joint ethics committee probed Mashatile over the Liebenberg diamond after receiving a complaint from the DA in March 2025. DA chief whip George Michalakis at the time alleged that Mashatile had breached the code requiring MPs to disclose gifts received by their immediate family in the confidential part of the register of members' interests. 'Following consideration of the complaint and perusal of the confidential part of the Deputy President's disclosed interests, the committee noted that the gift in question (a diamond from Mr Louis Liebenberg) was not disclosed,' the committee said. 'While the committee noted the member's response, among others, that he was waiting for the appraisal of the diamond to determine its value before a declaration was made and that he has since surrendered the gift to the National Prosecuting Authority, the committee contended that ethical behaviour required that the gift be declared, with the value disclosed at a later stage.' Reacting to committee's damning findings against Mashatile on Thursday, Michalakis said the nature of the relationship between Mashatile and Liebenberg remained unclear. 'The DA welcomes the guilty finding of the parliamentary joint ethics committee against Deputy President Paul Mashatile, for failing to disclose a diamond gifted to his wife by alleged fraudster Louis Liebenberg. 'We also note the sanction of a reprimand and R10,000 fine. This follows a complaint I laid with the committee on March 5 2025,' he said. 'The deputy president has since confirmed that the diamond was handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority. However, the ethics report raises more questions than answers, and the DA will submit parliamentary questions in this regard.' Michalakis said it was worrying that Mashatile was 'so careless' in his failure to disclose his assets as required. 'These failures give rise to serious concerns as to why the deputy president continuously fails to declare assets transparently and ethically, as well as what other assets the deputy president holds that have not yet been declared,' he said. The peace officer identified in a video as Renato Reid, which went viral on social media, shows him allegedly choking Dambuza while apparently pinning him to the ground. According to Reid's LinkedIn profile, he is a SWAT Operational Commander with 18 years experience in the South African police. His profile was shared widely on social media following the incident. Cape Town Speaker, Felicity Purchase, said the confrontation started after Dambuza refused to leave the Council Chambers when she asked him to. Giving his account of what happened, Dambuza, better known as 'Banzi', said he refused to leave the Chambers after another councillor was allowed to bring a Point of Order. 'A councillor of GOOD Party was asking a question, and then a Point of Order came from a councillor of the DA,' he said. 'She (Speaker) allowed it, meanwhile, she would always say there is no Point of Order during the time we are dealing with the speech of the mayor. 'I again raised the protective cultures of the DA, she (Purchase) named me for the first time, second time and third time and said I must be removed from Council. 'Upon that I said, I am not going to move out of Council. 'The Speaker called on what we deem as 'peace officers'. 'The rest of the caucus of the EFF started laying a protective layer around me.' Dambuza said the incident quickly escalated. 'There is a photograph showing one of the EFF councillors, she was placing her whole body on top of me, so that I am not taken away,' he said. 'These so-called peace officers were pulling her, whether they were male or female, they were harassing a woman. 'As I grabbed the poles, they wanted to get me out and they tore my pants as they grabbed it. 'This officer, Renato Reid, came in and held me from the back on my neck and then he started strangling me. 'After he pulled me out, he placed his knee onto my neck and then he strangled me. 'I said to him, 'but you are strangling me', 'you are trying to kill me'. He did not stop, he turned me around and sat on top of me and then he continued to strangle me, this was when I was losing life (unconscious), when I became unconscious, he started hitting me from the back, and I came back (from consciousness), then he tried to strangle me again. "This is the time when executive director Vincent Botto stopped them. 'There was another guy holding my right arm under the table, so that I was not able to remove his hands. 'After that, I asked Vincent Botto, who is the officer, they refused to give his details. 'We went to the police station to open a case. Councilors from ANC, NCC, EFF and GOOD who were witnesses, gave statements. "Let's say hypothetically speaking, I was wrong in terms of the rules, they carry their own opinion but there is no councillor that must be choked, the way that they dealt with it could have been better.
