Two men arrested in connection with KwaZulu-Natal political killings

Two men who were arrested by the SAPS' KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team in connection with the murder of DA Councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu appeared in Howick Magistrate's Court yesterday. Their arrests came just two days after the unit arrested a former Municipal Manager in connection with the killing of the former ANC Youth League Secretary General, Sindiso Magaqa.
One of the suspects arrested in the Ndlovu matter was Amanxamalala Traditional Authority's Inkosi Simphiwe Zuma, who is related to the former and current Umkhonto WeSizwe party President Jacob Zuma. Zuma was arrested alongside Thabo Mathonsi-Chonco. Both Zuma and Mathonsi-Chonco were out on bail for a separate murder case.
Although the latest charges against Inkosi Zuma remain unclear, Mathonsi-Chonco was accused of conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of Ndlovu on December 23, 2023.
Court A at the courthouse was filled with DA members, Inkosi Zuma's supporters, and members of the public. Another accused in the matter, Zwelithini Buthelezi, was not present. A source informed the Daily News that Buthelezi's charges were withdrawn on July 29 after he agreed to testify for the National Prosecuting Authority as a Section 204 witness.
Inkosi Zuma and Buthelezi are also facing another murder charge for killing Zuma's head of izinduna, Qalokunye Zuma, on January 23, 2023. In that matter, Inkosi was granted R25,000 bail after his arrest on June 13; however, Buthelezi had already been denied bail in Ndlovu's murder case. He was arrested for Ndlovu's murder almost a month after being freed on bail from holding cells by Impendle Magistrate's Court in connection with Qalokunye Zuma's murder.

During Thursday's court appearance, the Howick court only dealt with Mathonsi-Chonco, who wanted to be transferred from Westville Prison in Durban to Pietermaritzburg's New Prison.
His lawyer, Nkomo, who refused to divulge his first name, stated that his client wished to be transferred to Pietermaritzburg due to ill health and that the city fell within the jurisdiction of the Howick court.
However, Prosecutor Advocate Elvis Gcweka rejected the request, citing concerns that the accused might collude with Buthelezi, who was being held in Pietermaritzburg. Magistrate Ntini rejected Mathonsi-Chonco's request, stating, 'As the State has its fears, I don't see the problem in keeping the accused at Westville. If he is unwell, he can get medical treatment while kept in Westville.'
At the time of his death, Ndlovu was deployed to the Umgeni Local Municipality. On Monday, the team arrested the 55-year-old former senior official at the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality in Malvern, Durban, regarding Magaqa's death

The PDMC, in collaboration with the eThekwini Municipality and South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL), is aiming to implement live video and surveillance cameras to enable real-time monitoring and reporting of disaster-related incidents. This initiative is not a standalone project, but rather it will be integrated with the Command and Control Collaborator (CMORE) software communication system as part of a broader information management and communication system. These setbacks were detailed when the KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Portfolio Committee was briefed on PDMC matters on Friday. These PDMC setbacks could be implemented in the 2026/27 and the 2027/28 financial years, including the acquisition of rescue equipment (e.g., snow chains) and specialised disaster response training. In response to ongoing fiscal constraints, CoGTA was instructed by the Provincial Treasury to implement cost-cutting measures. Despite these constraints, a R2 million allocation has been made for the 2025/26 financial year to support the maintenance of integrated communication systems. This includes maintenance of boardroom audio-visual equipment and support for CMORE. The meeting also gave progress on the current status of post-disaster management grants funded by the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), including utilisation, challenges, and impact on recovery and resilience efforts in affected communities. The NDMC made R4.1 billion in grant funding available in the form of disaster response and recovery grants to the affected municipalities between 2019 and 2025. Dr Joey Krishnan, acting HOD of CoGTA, said that KZN did not have sufficient resources to manage disasters in the province, so they have engaged in many Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various social partners. Krishnan said the social partners assist CoGTA with various types of support, relief material, food, blankets, as well as specialised training, and they come to the front when there are disasters. She said the collaboration was aimed at enhancing disaster management operations across the province. She said that the cooperation agreements signed on February 20, 2025, have significantly strengthened the KZN PDMC's capacity across all phases of disaster management. Marlaine Nair, CoGTA Portfolio Committee chairperson, said that the MoU between SANRAL, the South African Weather Services, and eThekwini to put cameras at strategic points so that the provincial DMC could monitor disasters and provide early warnings was not signed because it requires a significant budget that is not available. In addition, she said, the CMORE system that the department has piloted requires municipalities to purchase their smartphones, software, and data to be able to use. 'Currently, municipalities are budgeting the least amount for disaster management because of competing priorities. The Department of CoGTA must find an additional budget to be able to do much more in the province in terms of preparation for disaster preparedness and prevention,' she said. Tim Brauteseth, DA MPL, was concerned that after the April 2022 floods, an amount was allocated to eThekwini for expenditure on restoring infrastructure, but only a small amount of it had been spent to improve things. In response to Brauteseth, Krishnan said R861 million that was allocated to the eThekwini metro was returned to the national fiscus. 'We are aware of it and we have engaged eThekwini to provide details and reports in that regard. We have not received a detailed report in that sense, but in any event, they will have to make further applications now to the National Treasury, and we have indicated that we will support any application they make,' she said.

CAPE TOWN- The Democratic Alliance (DA)'s bill aimed at blocking impeached individuals from serving in any level of government has taken its first step on the road to be considered a viable law by being published for public comment. Introduced by the party's justice spokesperson, Glynnis Breytenbach, the Constitution Twenty-Second Amendment Bill seeks to amend three sections of the Constitution to achieve this objective. The bill has been prompted by former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane and former judge president John Hlophe both becoming parliamentarians, mere months after being impeached by the National Assembly. It was not until the sixth administration that Parliament faced impeaching a head of a Chapter 9 institution for the first time, and then the country's first two judges. DA NCOP member welcomes reports NPA to charge Nigerian rapper for crashing luxury car in CT
CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) member of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Security and Justice, Nicholas Gotsell, has welcomed reports that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided to charge a Nigerian rapper for crashing his McLaren in Sea Point in March. The musician, known as 3GAR Baby, is expected to appear in a Cape Town court soon for crashing his luxury supercar at high speed. ALSO READ: NPA confirms Nigerian rapper 3GAR Baby will face charges of reckless driving The NPA said the musician would be summoned to appear in court soon to face charges of reckless or negligent driving. It's believed that the Nigerian rapper, whose real name is Prince Daniel Obioma, was driving at over 200km/h when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a pavement on High Level Road on 1 March. Photos of him with blood gushing down his face circulated on social media shortly after the crash. Gotsell said the wheels of justice were finally turning after months of pressure on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to investigate the matter. "Over the past months, Cape Town and surrounds have been plagued by serious incidents involving luxury vehicles. Nobody, not even a so-called celebrity, is above the law." It's understood that a passenger was also injured in the accident.
