Continue enhancing NADI to maximise public benefit, Fahmi tells MCMC

GENEVA, Switzerland: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been urged to further enhance all 1,099 National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) nationwide to maximise benefit for the public.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said key areas for improvement include increasing internet speed and offering additional services such as e-Health.
"I will ask MCMC to review several aspects to ensure that NADI truly becomes NADI Madani.
"Our aim is for all 1,099 Nadi madani across the country to be fully utilised by the people," he told reporters after the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2025 award ceremony here today.
At the event, MCMC's NADI Digital Inclusive Project was named one of the WSIS Prizes 2025 winners through its NADI Pulau Banggi initiative, for its success in providing digital literacy, skills training and economic opportunities to one of Malaysia's most remote island communities.
Fahmi said the award reflects global recognition of MCMC's initiative to bridge the digital divide and improve internet connectivity for Malaysians.
"This is an acknowledgement that MCMC's efforts not only help close the digital gap across the country, including in areas long affected by poor connectivity, but can also serve as a model for other nations.
"In many places, when I share about such initiatives with fellow ministers, they express strong interest in learning more about this model," he said.
The WSIS Prizes are organised by the International Telecommunication Union in collaboration with United Nations agencies to honour outstanding information and communications technology projects that support the Sustainable Development Goals.
The award ceremony is held in conjunction with the WSIS+20 High-Level Event, which runs from today until July 11.

MCMC identifies 10 instruments to support Online Safety Act rollout, says deputy minister

PETALING JAYA, July 12 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified 10 subsidiary instruments, including regulations and codes, to facilitate the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act 2024, says Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She said that the instruments were at various stages of development, with prioritisation guided by the need to ensure alignment with the act's objectives and scope. According to Teo, the development of the regulations is contingent upon completion of the Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), followed by approval from the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). 'MCMC anticipates completing the development of the subsidiary instruments between Q4 2025 and Q2 2026, subject to the complexity and readiness of each item,' she said at The Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) 30th Anniversary celebration here tonight. Also present at the event were the 8th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang, Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, MBR chairman Datuk Seri Dr Michael Tio, MBR chief excecutive officer (CEO) Christopher Wong, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama Head of TV, Nor Hamzeela Md Hambali. Meanwhile, during her speech, Teo said MBR would be certifying a new national entry for a book on child sexual grooming by Mohamed Nazri Prem Nasir on Aug 2 at the University of Malaya. She said child sexual grooming was one of the core concerns addressed under the Online Safety Act 2024, a landmark legislation aimed at creating a safer digital space, especially for young and vulnerable users. Teo also mentioned MBR's upcoming 13-episode television series, Malaysia Luar Biasa, produced in collaboration with Bernama, noting that the programme would spotlight 30 to 40 national records featuring extraordinary Malaysians. 'Notably, the programme will debut during the National Day celebration week, making it even more special as we honour not just our nation's independence but also the spirit, resilience, and excellence of Malaysians who have made their mark. 'It's a timely reminder that patriotism can be expressed through achievement and that greatness can come from every corner of our beloved country,' she said. The programme will officially premiere on August 26, 2025, at 8.30 pm on Bernama TV (Astro 502). Teo said the significant milestone would add to Bernama's inspiring achievements, which also included a record in MBR for its participation in the 'Longest Non-Stop Multi-language National Broadcast.' She said Bernama TV, then known as Bernama News Channel (BNC), was one of the key platforms delivering the historic 25-hour non-stop national broadcast in four languages, held from Sept 16 to 17, 2019, in conjunction with Malaysia Day. Meanwhile, Teo also lauded the National Information Dissemination Centre's (NADI) achievements at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Awards 2025 in Geneva earlier this week, through its Pulau Banggi Initiative and Pulau Ketam Stingray II Project. She said as of June 30, a total of 1,097 NADI centres had been successfully established out of the 1,099 planned nationwide, while the remaining two centres in Sabah were in the final stages of implementation. 'This near-complete rollout is a testament to the Government's commitment to digital inclusivity and ensuring that no one is left behind,' she said. — Bernama

Malaysia shines at WSIS+20 with telecom achievements and global recognition

GENEVA (Switzerland): Malaysia's participation in the World Summit on the Information Society +20 (WSIS+20) High-Level Event, held here from July 7 to 11, highlighted the country's achievements in advancing the telecommunications sector. This was evidenced by the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI)'s WSIS Prizes 2025 victory, through the NADI Pulau Banggi initiative, recognised for providing digital literacy, skills training and economic opportunities to one of Malaysia's most remote island communities. NADI, led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), was also declared champion in the category C4: Capacity Building, while another MCMC project in collaboration with Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), Stingray II Project at Pulau Ketam, won the C2: Information and Communication Infrastructure category. Malaysia was also named champion in category C10: ICT Applications – Benefits in All Aspects of Life – E-health, and C10: Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society. These wins were achieved through the MyHeart: AI-Powered Predictive System for Cardiovascular Health, developed by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and University of Malaya (UM); and the Penang Stop Violence application developed by the Penang Women's Development Corporation (PWDC) in collaboration with the Penang state government. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said NADI's success was highly significant, as it was among only 18 WSIS Prizes 2025 winners out of 970 projects nominated worldwide. 'This is truly a remarkable achievement,' he told reporters at WSIS+20 here Thursday. Fahmi said Malaysia's participation at WSIS+20 also gave the country the opportunity to share its views on current developments in the telecommunications sector, artificial intelligence (AI), and other related issues. 'We were also able to listen to the perspectives, recommendations and challenges faced by other countries, as well as the efforts of platforms such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to establish global policies that enable member states to find solutions suited to their needs,' he said. He said the issues raised by participating delegations included the capacity to build infrastructure that supported AI, ethical and moral guidelines in AI use, and the divide between the 'Global North' (developed nations) and 'Global South' (developing and third world countries). 'The foundation of AI is robust telecommunications infrastructure, with the ability to compute at high volumes. 'This can only happen when internet connectivity is exceptionally good and fast... we hope Malaysia's experience in implementing infrastructure projects can be shared with countries that have yet to roll out 5G,' he said. Malaysia's willingness to share its experience with ITU member states is also in line with its bid to be re-elected as an ITU Council Member at the upcoming election in November next year. Fahmi said Malaysia's political stability and policy clarity were seen by ITU members as being among the factors that enabled the country to play a bigger role on the global stage. 'Malaysia's voice is important because we represent a part of the Global South, and our leadership in ASEAN as Chair for 2025 places us in a prominent position in the eyes of the international community,' he said. Fahmi said the bid, which had been approved by the Cabinet, would not only secure Malaysia a place to speak on global platforms but also provide new learning opportunities and the chance to discuss policy matters concerning emerging technologies such as AI. Fahmi, who concluded his visit here today in conjunction with Malaysia's participation at WSIS+20, also held 10 bilateral meetings during the summit. Among others, he met with Algeria's Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki; Ghana's Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George; Somalia's Minister of Communications and Technology Mohamed Adam Moalim; Kuwait's Minister of State for Communications Affairs Omar Al-Omar; and his counterpart from the United Kingdom, Maggie Jones. - Bernama
