Continue enhancing NADI to maximise public benefit, Fahmi tells MCMC

GENEVA, Switzerland: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been urged to further enhance all 1,099 National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) nationwide to maximise benefit for the public. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said key areas for improvement include increasing internet speed and offering additional services such as e-Health. "I will ask MCMC to review several aspects to ensure that NADI truly becomes NADI Madani. "Our aim is for all 1,099 Nadi madani across the country to be fully utilised by the people," he told reporters after the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2025 award ceremony here today. At the event, MCMC's NADI Digital Inclusive Project was named one of the WSIS Prizes 2025 winners through its NADI Pulau Banggi initiative, for its success in providing digital literacy, skills training and economic opportunities to one of Malaysia's most remote island communities. Fahmi said the award reflects global recognition of MCMC's initiative to bridge the digital divide and improve internet connectivity for Malaysians. "This is an acknowledgement that MCMC's efforts not only help close the digital gap across the country, including in areas long affected by poor connectivity, but can also serve as a model for other nations. "In many places, when I share about such initiatives with fellow ministers, they express strong interest in learning more about this model," he said. The WSIS Prizes are organised by the International Telecommunication Union in collaboration with United Nations agencies to honour outstanding information and communications technology projects that support the Sustainable Development Goals. The award ceremony is held in conjunction with the WSIS+20 High-Level Event, which runs from today until July 11.

MCMC's NADI Digital Inclusive Project wins WSIS 2025 award

GENEVA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has secured global recognition as its NADI Digital Inclusive Project emerged victorious at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Awards 2025. The initiative, particularly the NADI Pulau Banggi programme, triumphed in the 'C4: Capacity Building' category for enhancing digital literacy and economic opportunities in one of Malaysia's most isolated regions. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil received the award during the WSIS+20 High-Level Event, emphasising the MADANI Government's commitment to digital inclusivity. 'This success belongs to the community who have received digital skills for a better future as well as to all Malaysians who support the vision of an inclusive and connected nation,' he stated. Mohd Arif Adenan, Head of MCMC's National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI), highlighted the project's global impact. 'This initiative proves Malaysia's leadership in telecommunications, ensuring no one is left behind in connectivity,' he told the media. The NADI project has equipped Pulau Banggi's 20,000 residents—primarily fishermen and farmers—with high-speed internet and ICT training, fostering youth employability and women-led micro-businesses. Pulau Banggi, accessible only by ferry, previously faced limited access to education and healthcare. Under Malaysia's JENDELA plan, community digital hubs now bridge these gaps. Following this success, MCMC plans to expand NADI to other underserved areas, including Pulau Mandi Darah, targeting nationwide coverage by 2035. Additionally, the Pulau Ketam Stingray II Project won in the 'C2: Information and Communication Infrastructure' category for deploying a 46.4km underwater fibre optic cable, enabling online education and telemedicine. Organised by the ITU, WSIS Prizes honour ICT initiatives advancing the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. – Bernama

MCMC'S NADI Digital Inclusive Project crowned as winner in WSIS 2025

GENEVA, Switzerland: The NADI Digital Inclusive Project by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been crowned as the winner of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Award 2025. MCMC's victory was achieved through the NADI Pulau Banggi Initiative, which was also named the winner in the "C4: Capacity Building" category for its success in providing digital literacy, skills training, and economic opportunities to one of Malaysia's most remote island communities. The award was received by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil at an official ceremony held in conjunction with the WSIS+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20) here today. In his acceptance speech, Fahmi said the NADI Digital Inclusive Project in Pulau Banggi reflects the Madani government's commitment that no one is left behind in the digital era. "This success belongs to the community who have received digital skills for a better future as well as to all Malaysians who support the vision of an inclusive and connected nation," he said. Head of the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI), Mohd Arif Adenan, said the project garnered global recognition for its efforts in empowering remote communities through digital skill development and connectivity. "This is a very proud victory for the country, where this initiative by MCMC has proven that Malaysia can be considered a leader in the telecommunications industry worldwide. "This shows that Malaysia leaves no one behind in terms of telecommunications and internet connectivity," he said when met by the media here. Mohd Arif said MCMC's participation in WSIS+20 also signifies support for the efforts of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and demonstrates that Malaysia is a highly committed member to all telecommunications and digital initiatives carried out by the United Nations (UN) agency. According to a statement issued by MCMC, Pulau Banggi, located about 70km from Kudat and only accessible by ferry or speedboat, is home to approximately 20,000 residents whose main economy is based on fishing, oil palm, and rubber. The island's remote location has limited residents' access to education, healthcare, and economic growth. "Under the Jalinan Digital Negara Plan (Jendela), Malaysia's National Digital Infrastructure Plan, the NADI initiative has established community digital hubs that now provide high-speed internet and ICT training to fishermen, farmers, students, and small business owners, equipping them with the skills to succeed in today's digital economy. "This project has transformed the lives of residents, with youth acquiring ICT skills, women starting online micro-businesses, and local entrepreneurs expanding their markets," the statement said. MCMC said following the success in Pulau Banggi, NADI is now being expanded to other underserved areas, including Pulau Mandi Darah (in northern Sabah), with plans for nationwide expansion by 2035 through scalable training modules, community hubs, and long-term funding in Sabah and Sarawak. Meanwhile, the Pulau Ketam Stingray II Project was also recognised as the winner in the "C2: Information and Communication Infrastructure" category for its efforts in providing high-speed connectivity through the installation of a 46.4-km underwater fiber optic cable between Kapar and Pulau Ketam in Selangor. This project has enabled students to participate in online learning, families to access telemedicine services, and boosted digital business growth for small businesses. The WSIS Prizes are organised by ITU in cooperation with UN agencies to celebrate information and communication technology (ICT) projects that drive progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
