For once the BBC is right: monsters can be great artists too

Eric Gill was undoubtedly a monster, guilty of the sexual abuse of children – his own children. For some reason he recorded his obnoxious private life in his diaries and was guilty of offences within his own family that would have landed him in prison had they been known.
Why then, it is being asked, should the BBC wish to spend more than half a million pounds restoring his statue of Prospero and Ariel on the imposing exterior of Broadcasting House?
Installed in 1933, the statue has already been attacked with a hammer twice in the last three years, prompting the installation of a protective screen in front of the work. Gill has become a particular target of the far-Right.
Yet this sculpture forms an integral part of one of London's iconic buildings and is the masterwork of an exceptionally skilled artist. In the Dictionary of National Biography, Gill is described as 'the greatest artist-craftsman of the twentieth century.'
We still live with the beautiful typefaces he designed, such as Perpetua and Gill Sans, enthusiastically adopted by Penguin and other publishers. His view was that 'a good piece of lettering is as beautiful a thing to see as any sculpture or painted picture', but not long before the First World War he began to turn his hand to sculpture as well.
Some of his most famous engravings give away aspects of his character: sexualised images of young women commonly appear, and his views about sexuality placed him at odds with the Catholic Church, of which he was a member, long before the posthumous revelation that he was an incestuous paedophile. He bragged that God had placed him on earth to produce his objects of beauty.
What, then, does one do with the works of art of a man whose creations were to some extent informed by his unsettling beliefs about religion and sexuality?
The choice by the BBC of Ariel as its mascot was inspired: here was a spirit that flew through the air like its radio waves.
Behind the opposition to the restoration of Prospero and Ariel there is an all-too-familiar intention of cancelling famous people in the past who led unpleasant lives.
But we have to recognise the uncomfortable truth that nastiness can stimulate creativity. Richard Wagner's anti-Semitism may have played into the themes of his operas, but there is no denying the enormous power of his music. It is certainly possible to listen to it without sharing his opinions.
Christopher Marlowe led a violent life that probably ended at the point of a dagger. Caravaggio may have been a murderer. They both produced extraordinary art.
At a less exalted level, Roald Dahl's nastiness generated some of the most popular children's books of the twentieth century, without creating a generation of equally nasty children.
We also have to accept that some of the world's greatest monuments were the creation of rulers who robbed, murdered, raped and enslaved, such as Tamerlane, the builder of much of Samarkand, commemorated in one of Marlowe's plays; while the Parthenon, far from being a proclamation of the virtues of democracy, was a celebration of the often brutal Athenian Empire. Gill's undoubted evil does not cancel out the brilliance of his artistic creations. One can admire skill without admiring personality.

EastEnders fans in meltdown over Zoe Slater's gobsmacking return after 20 years

EastEnders viewers were left in shock as Zoe Slater, played by Michelle Ryan, made her return to the Square after 17 years in Tuesday night's episode of the BBC soap EastEnders fans were left in disbelief this evening as Zoe Slater made her first on-screen appearance in two decades. After weeks of speculation, it's finally been confirmed that Michelle Ryan has reprised her role as Kat Slater's daughter for the first time since leaving Albert Square in 2005. In one of EastEnders ' most gripping plots, Zoe Slater's world was turned upside down when she found out that her 'sister' Kat (played by Jessie Wallace) was in fact her biological mother, after Kat had been assaulted by her uncle Harry at just 13 years old. ‌ The plot thickened in 2015 with the bombshell that Kat had twins, revealing Zoe has a twin brother. Zoe was last seen in Walford in 2005 before jetting off to Ibiza. ‌ Zoe's final dramatic moments on the Square involved her sleeping with Dirty Den to fake a pregnancy with his son Dennis Rickman's child and conspiring with Chrissie Watts and Sam Mitchell for vengeance against Den for his wrongdoings, mistakenly believing she had killed him. It later transpired that Zoe wasn't Den's killer; it was Chrissie who was guilty, resulting in her imprisonment while Zoe left for sunnier climes. Fast forward twenty years, and Zoe made a sensational return to EastEnders, leaving fans gobsmacked as she appeared dishevelled after stealing Kat's credit card for a spending spree. In desperate straits, Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) called upon Alfie Moon (Shane Ritchie) for help, who, fresh from marrying Kat, embraced his role as stepdad once more. The episode closed with Alfie greeting a returning Zoe with a despondent: "Hello Zoe." Soaps fans watching at home went wild, with one rushing to Twitter (X) to declare: "ZOE BLOODY SLATER #EastEnders." "ZOE YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO YOU AIN'T MY MOTHER SLATER IS BACK! #eastenders," another rejoiced as a third wrote: "An actual Zoe Slater return i can't believe my eyes #EastEnders." ‌ However, some were less surprised to see Zoe back on their screens. "Such a shame Zoe's return was leaked- imagine the shock we would have got #EastEnders," one Twitter user mused with another agreeing as they wrote: "Me acting shocked when Zoe Slater turns up even though her return got leaked weeks ago #EastEnders." Discussing her return to Walford, actress Michelle said of her comeback this evening: "It all happened at the right time. I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo) and Kim Medcalf (Sam Mitchell) and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and I'd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character. ‌ "It just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new Exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters, so both of our worlds aligned at the right time, and I'm so excited to be back. When Ben pitched me the storylines, and when I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision." Producers say Zoe will return with 20 years of "deep-rooted resentment" towards her mother, fractured family relationships, and siblings she has never met, adding that the character "will be in for one hell of a ride" when she returns. Teasing Zoe's future in Albert Square, Michelle coyly added: "I can't say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess. She's not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own. She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story."

The mother-daughter spectacle with Kat in 2001 cemented Zoe as one of the BBC soap's most iconic characters. EastEnders' Kat Slater calls her estranged daughter Zoe Slater who left 13 years ago The scene revealed that Zoe, the youngest of the all-female Slater clan, was in fact Kat's daughter but had been brought up by Charlie and Viv Slater as her own. In the storyline, Zoe is fed up of being bossed around by Kat and yells: 'You can't tell me what to do - you ain't my mother,' to which Kat explodes: 'Yes I am!' Zoe also had a string of countless failed love interests, including a disastrous relationship with Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman). The doomed affair - which resulted in a pregnancy - saw Zoe embroiled in the murder of Den Watts with accomplices Chrissie Watts and Sam Mitchell. Zoe left Albert Square in 2005 but during her time away, Zoe and Kat's relationship was said to have broken down once again and the pair have been estranged ever since. Michelle added: 'I can't say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess. 'She's not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own. 'She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story.' Michelle made her debut in 2000 alongside Jessie Wallace as Kat, Kasey Ainsworth as Little Mo and Elaine Lordan as Lynne. She quit the show in 2005 in a bid to crack Hollywood and landed the lead role in a big-budget remake of The Bionic Woman - but it failed to impress and was axed after just one season. In 2008 she ruled out a return to the soap. She said: 'I just got quite bored in the end, to be honest. 'Doing the same thing day in, day out. 'It's just so boring. 'I like to jump from different things.' She added: 'Money doesn't drive me. 'You couldn't get me back.' However last year she said 'never say never' when asked about a potential return. 4 In 2008 Natalie ruled out a return to the soap Credit: Getty Unlock even more award-winning articles as The Sun launches brand new membership programme - Sun Club.
