Project engineer killed in four-vehicle crash on Jalan Lipis-Merapoh in Pahang

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — A 34-year-old project engineer died in a four-vehicle collision involving a trailer and three cars at Km30 of Jalan Lipis-Merapoh near Padang Tengku, Lipis early this morning. The New Straits Times reported that the victim, Mohd Hafiz Mohd Ghazali, died at the scene of the 3am crash. 'Initial investigations revealed that Hafiz had lost control of his Volkswagen Jetta before crashing into the oncoming trailer,' said Lipis police chief Superintendent Ismail Man. 'The impact of the crash caused the trailer to graze two other vehicles. Hafiz died at the scene and his remains were taken to Lipis Hospital,' he said in a statement today. Police said the trailer, driven by a 41-year-old man, was travelling from Kelantan to Selangor. The three cars were heading in the opposite direction from Kuala Lumpur to Kelantan. None of the other drivers were injured in the crash. Police are investigating the case under reckless or dangerous driving provisions. Ismail urged witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to come forward to assist in the investigation. Several hours earlier, five people — including four siblings — were killed in a separate accident at Km7 of Jalan Jerantut-Maran in Jerantut.

IWK detects illegal chemical discharge after Bukit Minyak sewer explosion

Although the sewer line remains operational with no blockages or structural damage, the blast displaced a manhole cover and damaged a road culvert. IWK said its operations team was deployed immediately after the incident to assess the situation and implement safety measures. The affected area has been barricaded. In a statement today, IWK said the investigation revealed signs of illegal chemical discharge from a nearby factory, based on the presence of the unusual gas in the sewer network. It said it has notified the environment department and the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), and requested their assistance in identifying the source of the chemical spill. Although the sewer line remains operational with no blockages or structural damage, the blast displaced a manhole cover and damaged a road culvert. The manhole has since been temporarily secured. A CCTV inspection of the sewer system will be conducted once clearance is given by the relevant authorities, it said. Penang fire and rescue department assistant director John Sagun Francis confirmed that no injuries were reported. The single explosion occurred at about 11.30am along Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak 2, causing damage to the road. A hazmat (hazardous materials) unit confirmed there were no further threats, and recorded neutral readings from the sewer fluid.

Capsized boat at Tanjung Harapan refloated, search continues for missing couple off Port Klang

KLANG, June 7 — The search and rescue (SAR) operation to locate a couple who went missing after their boat capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan yesterday evening, continued today, with efforts focused on raising the sunken vessel. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Enforcement and Excise Unit operations officer, Maritime Lieutenant Mohd Syafiq Sazali, said that the boat was partially refloated at 2.20 pm, after which the team began pumping out the water. 'The next step involves deploying divers to secure ropes to the underside of the boat to lift or elevate its front section,' he said. 'Once that is done, we will pump out the remaining water and inspect the vessel to determine if there are any victims' bodies inside,' he told reporters at the search site in Tanjung Harapan today. In the incident, which occurred around 5 pm yesterday, three individuals, including a child, were found dead, while a couple remain missing, after the boat they were in capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang. The missing victims have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife, Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. Tragically, their three-year-old son, Darren Gan, was among the three found dead in the front compartment of the boat, alongside family friends Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29. Another victim, Chang Yan Qin Alvin, 17, was successfully rescued by a group of fishermen. Meanwhile, Mohd Syafiq said that the SAR operation, which resumed at 7 am today, involved four assets from various security agencies, in addition to three more provided by the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC). He added that the high tide significantly aided the efforts to raise the boat, as it still had some buoyancy, making it easier for the diving team to attach the rope needed to lift it. — Bernama
