Chandigarh admn earmarks land for women police station, IB, NIA offices
At present, the station operates from a shared building in Sector 17, which also houses other police wings. Following the land allocation, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared, and necessary approvals and tender processes will be completed.
In addition, 1.5 acres of land in Sector 31 has been allocated for the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB). The proposed site will house a modern, high-tech office complex for the bureau, which serves as the regional wing of the Central Intelligence Bureau, monitoring security, counter-terrorism, organised crime, cybercrime, and internal threats.
Also, it earmarked 2 acres of land, costing ₹68 crore, in Industrial Area, Phase-II, for a dedicated branch office of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The administration has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the agency, and the cost of the land is ₹68 crore. As per sources, the Chandigarh branch of NIA will be headed by an inspector general (IG) rank officer, with one deputy inspector general (DIG) and two superintendents of police (SPs), thus justifying their demand for a substantial built-up area.
In a bid to improve access to affordable and quality healthcare, the administration has also allocated 0.25 acres in Sector 51 for an Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandir (dispensary).
Additionally, the UT has also allotted 1.73 acres of land to the directorate of enforcement in Sector 38 (west) at the cost of ₹59 crores. An LoI has been issued and construction is expected to commence soon.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has requested additional land from the UT to expand its office in Sector 30.
This demand comes at a time when the city is becoming a preferred choice for central government security and investigation agencies to establish their offices, such as the NIA and Enforcement Directorate.
The UT is also in the process of allocating land to the Central Industrial Security Force and Sashastra Seema Bal in different parts of the city.
Last year, UT had allocated 1.72 acres of land for the construction of Ladakh Bhawan in Sector 33 at a cost of ₹62 crore.

The court was deciding on an anticipatory bail plea moved by Vicky Ramancha, who has been accused of criminal conspiracy and cheating a foreign firm by supplying them counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs, specifically Ozempic. A case was lodged against Ramancha by the Delhi Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The court said, 'The discretionary remedy of anticipatory bail cannot be granted in circumstances where allegations involve grave offences against public health and safety, international ramifications threaten India's pharmaceutical industry reputation…grant of bail would undermine public confidence in criminal justice system.' The prosecution claimed that the accused was part of a trans-national fraud operation that purportedly caused financial losses exceeding USD 18.8 million to the complainant company. The police further claimed that investigation revealed a systematic pattern of criminal misconduct wherein false representation was created by the accused of having legitimate pharmaceutical supply chains and government connections in India. Police said that false certificates were notarised by Patiala House Courts itself to create a false impression and build trust for larger transactions. To be sure, the case also attracted the attention of US federal authorities, wherein the complainant company received subpoenas (notice to appear in court or produce evidence) from the US Department of Justice regarding potential violations of federal criminal laws, including importation and misbranded drugs. Advocate Yagyesh Kumar, appearing for the accused, argued that the case did not fall within the territorial jurisdiction of the court as the transaction took place outside the country and a commercial arbitration case was already ongoing at London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA). He further added that the fake medicines were due to genuine business difficulties rather than with a criminal intent.

Kothamangalam suicide: Woman's family seeks NIA probe, claims she's victim of attempted forced conversion
Kochi: The family of a deceased 23-year-old woman from Kothamangalam, who alleged in her suicide note that her boyfriend compelled her to convert, has demanded a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA). This comes even as Ernakulam rural police have formed a nine-member special investigation team, led by Muvattupuzha DSP, to investigate her death. Her boyfriend, Rameez (24), who was arrested on Monday, is in judicial custody and the investigation team is expected to seek his custody soon. The woman's mother has written to CM Pinarayi Vijayan and state police chief demanding an NIA probe. In the letter, she raised suspicion that her daughter was the victim of an attempted forced conversion by the accused. She alleged that her daughter was confined in the accused's house by him and his family, where she was physically assaulted. She also claimed that the charges invoked by police against Rameez were "not strong". The Kothamangalam police have booked the accused under Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means, etc.) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), after a friend of the deceased corroborated that the accused had slapped her. However, the investigation team maintains that, so far, evidence points to a love affair gone sour rather than a concerted effort to convert religion. Police said the duo were batchmates at a college in Aluva and had decided to marry, but Rameez recently backtracked and even blocked her on WhatsApp. The woman was found hanging in her house in Kothamangalam on Saturday. Police recovered a suicide note, presumably written by the victim, containing serious accusations that the accused compelled her to convert and subjected her to cruelty. Meanwhile, the Syro-Malabar Church's media commission took up the issue, claiming in a Facebook post that the "real religious conversion" was happening in Kerala, not in Chhattisgarh. It added that it was unfortunate young women still could not identify religious extremists who exploit pure emotions like love to cheat. Central govt green-signalsLucknow Metro E-W corridor
Lucknow: The Union Cabinet on Tuesday green-signalled the East-West Corridor of the Lucknow Metro rail. The corridor will stretch from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, and give commuters easy access to densely populated and culturally rich areas of the Old City. The corridor has a length of 11.165 km and will cost Rs 5,801 crore, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday. The Union Cabinet meeting held in Delhi was presided over by PM Narendra Modi . The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC) will now initiate the tendering process within the three weeks. The corridor is expected to be completed in five years once it is started. In a statement, the central govt said that Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project represents a significant advancement in the city's infrastructure development. This phase will seamlessly integrate the key zones of Old Lucknow, including commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj and Chowk. It will also integrate the other key zones such as the KGMU and major tourist attractions such as Bada Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza. "By bridging these vital areas with the Metro network, Phase-1B will not only enhance connectivity but also stimulate economic activity, tourism, and ease urban mobility for both residents and visitors," the govt said. By addressing key urban challenges and providing a foundation for future expansion, Phase-1B will play a crucial role in shaping the city's development trajectory and sustainability, the govt's statement said. The Network Planning Group cleared the proposal in July 2024 and the Public Investment Board recommended it in May 2025. Spanning a total length of 11.16km, the corridor will include 4.286km of elevated track and 6.879km of underground sections. It will feature 12 Metro stations — 7 underground and 5 elevated — designed to serve both heritage zones and emerging residential areas. The estimated cost of the project will be Rs 5,801 crore. The corridor will seamlessly integrate with the existing North-South Corridor at Charbagh Metro station, which will serve as an interchange hub. This integration will allow commuters to switch between the two corridors effortlessly, enhancing overall connectivity across the city. The corridor is expected to serve an additional 200,000 passengers daily. UPMRC managing director Sushil Kumar emphasized Metro's role in delivering a world-class transit system to congested areas while preserving access to Lucknow's cultural heritage. The underground stations on the East-West Corridor are Charbagh, Gautam Buddha Marg, Aminabad, Pandeyganj, City Railway Station, Medical Crossing and Chowk. The elevated stations will be Thakurganj, Balaganj, Sarfarazganj, Moosabagh, and Vasant Kunj. Once operational, the East-West Corridor will extend the total Metro network in Lucknow to 35km, building upon the existing 23-km North-South line that runs from Amausi Airport to Munshipulia. "With groundwork underway and essential research data compiled, the East-West Corridor will become a transformative infrastructure project for Lucknow, promising improved connectivity, reduced traffic congestion, and enhanced quality of life for its residents especially to those living in the Old City area," said UPMRC MD Sushil Kumar.
