City Power condemns intimidation of technicians and suspends service in Kanana Ext. 4 and 5
The power entity spokesperson Isaac Mangena said in recent weeks, the Midrand Service Delivery Centre (SDC) has experienced a worrying rise in such incidents.
He said most notably, on July 11 community members from Kanana Extensions 4 and 5 stormed the Midrand SDC, blocked the gates for several hours, and disrupted operations by preventing technicians from attending to an outage in the area.

'Last night [July 10], City Power technicians responded to an outage in the area and discovered that the fault was linked to a problem on the overhead line, an issue that could only be safely addressed during the day. The task was then handed over to the day-shift team. However, while our teams were preparing to conduct the repairs and sourcing the necessary materials, community members blocked the gates and refused to let them leave the
SDC,' said Mangena.
He said this then further delayed the process of repair work in that area as well as in other areas.
Mangena said on the same day, a team of electricians dispatched to Rabie Ridge were held hostage and threatened by residents, only being released after intervention from their Security Risk team.
'Two weeks ago, services to Mayibuye had to be suspended for nearly a week after technicians were similarly threatened and held hostage while attempting to conduct legitimate maintenance work in the area, including work to normalise the area by installing prepaid meters. Another incident occurred about three weeks ago in Klipfontein, where City Power technicians and a contractor were held hostage at a substation during a power outage,' added Mangena.

He said due to these continued safety he risks, City Power has taken a decision to temporarily suspend services in Kanana Extensions 4 and 5, where technicians can no longer operate safely.
'We will continue to monitor the situation and will only resume work once it is safe to do so,' concluded Mangena.

WATCH: ‘A scammer trying to scam me as me'
Experts say there has been a significant rise in these types of cybercrimes in South Africa. Actress and producer Connie Ferguson recently took to Instagram to warn her followers after a scammer attempted to impersonate her. Scammers are increasingly using the names and images of public figures to deceive unsuspecting victims. From fake investment schemes to bogus giveaways, con artists are exploiting social media and messaging apps to pose as well-known personalities. 'Time for a short story,' Connie wrote, sharing screenshots and a video. She said she received a WhatsApp message from someone claiming to be 'Connie Ferguson'. When she checked the number on Truecaller, it appeared as 'Madonsela'. The scammer then video-called her using an old clip from a live workout session she had posted during lockdown. 'After a few seconds, they dropped the call and texted, 'You saw me, right?'' she said. Connie made it clear that she does not offer any investment opportunities and urged her followers to remain vigilant. 'Thieves are using AI to convince you that they are whoever they say they are. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Don't be manipulated into losing your common sense because times are hard.' 'This surge can be attributed to several factors, including the increasing number of techniques and tools available, the growing popularity of social media platforms, and the public's heightened trust in celebrities. 'It goes without saying that people often fall for 'get-rich-quick' schemes, especially when a 'celebrity' is encouraging them to get involved,' he said.
