Moving to Canada? 10 things you should totally know before you go

Time of India2 days ago

So, you're thinking of making the big move to Canada? Whether you're chasing the dream of free healthcare, cozy winters, or just really love maple syrup, the Great White North has a ton to offer.
But before you pack your bags and start Googling the best poutine in town, here are 10 things you really should know to make your move as smooth as fresh snow.
Immigration isn't a breeze (sorry!)
Yes, Canada's friendly—but getting in isn't a cakewalk. Depending on where you're from, you'll need either a TRV (Temporary Resident Visa) or an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter. Want to work or study? That's a whole different application. So, start the paperwork early and keep your documents neat and ready.
English or French? Both, actually
English is everywhere, sure—but in places like Quebec, French is the main language. Even outside Quebec, speaking both can open more doors job-wise. If you're rusty, no worries—Canada has plenty of language classes and community programs to help you brush up.
No credit history? That's a thing
In Canada, credit is a big deal. No credit = tougher time renting, getting a phone plan, or applying for loans. Start building credit ASAP: get a bank account, grab a secured credit card, and pay your bills on time.

Simple, but super important.
Winter is coming. And it's real.
Let's be real—Canadian winters can be brutal. In places like Winnipeg or Regina, it's not uncommon to see -40°C. So, invest in proper winter gear: think warm boots, thick coats, and layers. That said, summers can be pretty hot, too. Pack for all four seasons!
Healthcare is free-ish
Yep, Canada has universal healthcare—but that doesn't mean instant service. Wait times, especially for specialists, can be long.
Also, you need to apply for your provincial health card as soon as you arrive. Some provinces have waiting periods, so private insurance for the first few months is a smart move.
Your wallet will notice the difference
Cost of living really depends on where you land. Toronto and Vancouver? Pricey. Smaller cities like Halifax or Winnipeg? Much easier on the wallet. Do your research, and build a budget that includes housing, food, and fun.
Driving around? Here's the deal
You can drive with your current license for a bit (usually 60–90 days), but eventually you'll need to switch to a Canadian one.
Public transit is decent in most cities, but outside the downtown core, a car can make life way easier.
Jobs? It's all about who you know
Canada has jobs, but landing one can take time. Networking is key—attend meetups, use LinkedIn, and join industry groups. Heads-up: your qualifications might not transfer automatically. You may need to get them assessed or take extra courses.
Be nice, join the fun
Canadians are known for being polite, inclusive, and big fans of hockey. Jump into the local culture—go to community events, try Tim Hortons, and don't be shy to say 'hi' to neighbors. The more you embrace the lifestyle, the easier the transition.
Nature is your new best friend
Seriously, Canada is stunning. From mountains to forests to lakes, there's no shortage of adventure. Go hiking, skiing, canoeing—whatever floats your boat. The outdoors isn't just beautiful here; it's a big part of life.

Visva-Bharati to start Sun guided walks in Santiniketan heritage zone

Kolkata: Visva-Bharati (VB) is set to introduce Sunday guided walking tours of the core heritage zone — the Ashrama area of Santiniketan — for tourists, probably from July. The Ashrama complex, which accommodates tourist attractions like the Upasana Griha, Santiniketan Griha, Patha Bhavana, Chhatimtala, Dinantika, Gour Prangan, Cheena Bhavana, Hindi Bhavana and other heritage structures, was restricted to tourists since the pandemic. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The newly appointed vice-chancellor, Probir Kumar Ghosh, in March announced that the Ashrama area will be made accessible to the public in a controlled manner to strike a "balance between heritage conservation and tourist access." Sources said the decision to conduct heritage walks was taken at a high-level meeting in May. An official shared that the university was planning to introduce guided walking tours after the summer vacation ends. "The guided tour will be conducted on Sundays in slots comprising nearly 25 visitors. Tourists can avail themselves of the facility of online booking to book slots for the heritage walk, which will be provided by trained guides," said VB public relations officer Atig Ghosh. The heritage walks will provide tourists a glimpse of the Upasana Griha (the glass temple), the Chhatimtala, the Santiniketan Griha, which is the oldest house on the campus and was bought by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore in 1862 from a local zamindar, the Patha Bhavana, the school founded by Rabindranath Tagore for children, the Cheena Bhavana, the Hindi Bhavana, the octagonal two-storey structure Dinantika, the Singha-Sadan, with its iconic clock tower and bell, and other heritage structures. "It is still under consideration whether tourists can visit Sangeet Bhavana and Kala Bhavana," said Ghosh. An official added: "Young VB employees and students will be given training for conducting the tours. The heritage walks will be conducted in three languages — Bengali, English, and Hindi. Initially, we will be starting as a trial run and expand it depending on the response of visitors. There is also a plan to introduce light and sound shows." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While the Ashrama area was restricted to public access even after the pandemic, the Uttarayan Complex (housing the Rabindra Bhavana, the residences of Tagore, ) is fully accessible to the general public on all days of the week, except Wednesdays and Thursdays.

PWD to build 400 toilets along state highways; seeks CSR funds

1 2 Pune: The Public Works Department (PWD) plans to establish around 400 wayside hubs with restrooms and eateries across a 1 lakh kilometre road network in the state in the next two to three months. The department aims to address the acute shortage of restroom facilities along highways. Authorities have decided to leverage Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aid instead of seeking state funds. "We will not seek state funds but partner with private entities interested in the construction, operations, and maintenance of the facilities. We are also in discussion with self-help groups regarding year-round maintenance of these facilities," a senior PWD official said. The decision came after the Bombay high court, in April this year, directed the state govt while hearing a PIL filed by a city-based activist highlighting the lack of toilets on state highways, despite assurances of constructing 400 toilets. The petitioner approached the high court against PWD and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd. (MSRDC), seeking directions for adequate toilet facilities along state highways and the Mumbai-Pune expressway, claiming that such facilities are basic and essential for journeys of two to four hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Undo The department has identified crucial locations across all districts and the facilities have been planned 30-40km apart. TOI had previously highlighted the shortage of restroom facilities along highways. PWD is now developing a comprehensive mapping strategy to ensure sufficient coverage and enhance journey comfort while addressing crucial infrastructure gaps on state highways. "Wayside amenities are vital as people struggle to locate such facilities on lengthy highway stretches. While the road network expands, basic infrastructure development lags," said Megha Sonawane, a regular biker who raised this issue with the state govt through emails and social media. "Construction of such toilets would particularly benefit women travellers," she said. The sustainability model involves nominal user charges, while some facilities would operate eateries to offset maintenance costs. Around 8-10 such facilities have been planned in each district on major roads. While some facilities are already operational, notably near Ekvira Temple in Karla near Lonavla, sites for other similar facilities are being finalised. In order to help travellers locate the toilet facilities, the PWD plans to develop a mobile application — either integrated with Google Maps or as a standalone app. Regular commuters have, however, expressed concerns about previously announced facilities that often deteriorate without proper maintenance. Activists championing improved toilet conditions emphasised the necessity of third-party inspections for construction and maintenance to ensure proper standards. "Mere construction will not help. There should be a continuous effort made by the state and agencies to maintain these services well," said Seema Mohopatra, a regular traveller and activist. "Toilet facilities are available at Khalapur and Talegaon toll plazas and petrol pumps on the Pune-Mumbai expressway. With expressway expansion planned, three to four additional toilets will be built along the route," an MSRDC official said.
