Kolkata: Visva-Bharati (VB) is set to introduce Sunday guided walking tours of the core heritage zone — the Ashrama area of Santiniketan — for tourists, probably from July. The Ashrama complex, which accommodates tourist attractions like the Upasana Griha, Santiniketan Griha, Patha Bhavana, Chhatimtala, Dinantika, Gour Prangan, Cheena Bhavana, Hindi Bhavana and other heritage structures, was restricted to tourists since the pandemic. Sources said the decision to conduct heritage walks was taken at a high-level meeting in May. An official shared that the university was planning to introduce guided walking tours after the summer vacation ends. "The guided tour will be conducted on Sundays in slots comprising nearly 25 visitors. Tourists can avail themselves of the facility of online booking to book slots for the heritage walk, which will be provided by trained guides," said VB public relations officer Atig Ghosh. The heritage walks will provide tourists a glimpse of the Upasana Griha (the glass temple), the Chhatimtala, the Santiniketan Griha, which is the oldest house on the campus and was bought by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore in 1862 from a local zamindar, the Patha Bhavana, the school founded by Rabindranath Tagore for children, the Cheena Bhavana, the Hindi Bhavana, the octagonal two-storey structure Dinantika, the Singha-Sadan, with its iconic clock tower and bell, and other heritage structures. "It is still under consideration whether tourists can visit Sangeet Bhavana and Kala Bhavana," said Ghosh. Tourists lament lack of facilities at Kovai Kurtrallam
Coimbatore: Tourists visiting Kovai Kurtallam waterfalls in the in the Boluvampatti forest range lament that the tourist spot lacks facilities such as toilet and dress changing rooms. Every year, more than three lakh people visit the waterfalls. It recorded footfall of more than 50,000 in the last two months. M Deepa, a homemaker from Race Course in Coimbatore city, often visited Kovai Kurtallam with her family members. She said it was a wonderful place to enjoy nature. However, the waterfalls and the surrounding areas are not maintained. "There are no proper rooms for changing clothes near the waterfalls. Currently, women are using a room without a roof for changing clothes, but it is not safe. During the weekends, more than 3,000 people visit the waterfalls, but no toilet facilities have been created. The forest department should create toilet facilities and rooms for changing clothes immediately," said Deepa. "There is not a single waste bin in and around the waterfalls," she said. We are planning to renovate two treetop houses and two more villas at Chadivayal. The children's play area will be upgraded to the parking lot area. We are going to restore the canopy walk for children in the reserve forest," Jayaraj said. PWD to build 400 toilets along state highways; seeks CSR funds
1 2 Pune: The Public Works Department (PWD) plans to establish around 400 wayside hubs with restrooms and eateries across a 1 lakh kilometre road network in the state in the next two to three months. The department aims to address the acute shortage of restroom facilities along highways. Authorities have decided to leverage Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aid instead of seeking state funds. "We will not seek state funds but partner with private entities interested in the construction, operations, and maintenance of the facilities. We are also in discussion with self-help groups regarding year-round maintenance of these facilities," a senior PWD official said. The decision came after the Bombay high court, in April this year, directed the state govt while hearing a PIL filed by a city-based activist highlighting the lack of toilets on state highways, despite assurances of constructing 400 toilets. The petitioner approached the high court against PWD and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd. TOI had previously highlighted the shortage of restroom facilities along highways. PWD is now developing a comprehensive mapping strategy to ensure sufficient coverage and enhance journey comfort while addressing crucial infrastructure gaps on state highways. "Wayside amenities are vital as people struggle to locate such facilities on lengthy highway stretches. While the road network expands, basic infrastructure development lags," said Megha Sonawane, a regular biker who raised this issue with the state govt through emails and social media. "Construction of such toilets would particularly benefit women travellers," she said. The sustainability model involves nominal user charges, while some facilities would operate eateries to offset maintenance costs. Around 8-10 such facilities have been planned in each district on major roads. While some facilities are already operational, notably near Ekvira Temple in Karla near Lonavla, sites for other similar facilities are being finalised. In order to help travellers locate the toilet facilities, the PWD plans to develop a mobile application — either integrated with Google Maps or as a standalone app. Regular commuters have, however, expressed concerns about previously announced facilities that often deteriorate without proper maintenance. Activists championing improved toilet conditions emphasised the necessity of third-party inspections for construction and maintenance to ensure proper standards. "Mere construction will not help. There should be a continuous effort made by the state and agencies to maintain these services well," said Seema Mohopatra, a regular traveller and activist. "Toilet facilities are available at Khalapur and Talegaon toll plazas and petrol pumps on the Pune-Mumbai expressway. With expressway expansion planned, three to four additional toilets will be built along the route," an MSRDC official said.
