From fruit chaat seller to assistant professor: Tej Kushwaha's inspiring journey
Indore: In a testament to perseverance and determination, 31-year-old Tej Prakash Kushwaha, a native of a small village in Rewa district, achieved his dream of becoming an assistant professor in geography.
His name figures among the successful candidates in the recently announced interview results of the MPPSC Assistant Professor Recruitment Exam 2022.
Kushwaha hails from Bausadwa village in Jawa tehsil where his parents are engaged in farming. He completed his early education at a govt school in his village that went up only to Class 5, after which he moved to another town to continue his studies. Despite facing academic setbacks — he once failed Class 8—Tej went on to earn a BA and MA in geography from Allahabad University.
His journey into competitive exams began with the UPSC, for which he prepared while living in Delhi for three years. After multiple attempts, he shifted his focus to the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) and moved to Indore in 2019. Though he cleared the prelims four times and appeared for mains, the interview round remained elusive.
Faced with financial difficulties while preparing, Tej and three friends—Shubham Thakur, Suraj, and Pradeep—started a small venture named PSC Falahaar, selling fruit chaat near Bhola Ram Ustad Marg in Indore.
"Expenses in Indore were rising, so we decided to serve fresh fruits to students and residents for just Rs.20," Tej told TOI.
The group would visit the fruit mandi at 5am, prepare the servings, and take turns running the stall to balance work and studies. While their aim was to make Rs 200 each per day for their expenses, the venture became a success and expanded to multiple locations in Indore, eventually being replicated in 14 other states by students.
In early 2025, Tej and his friends handed over the initiative to another group in need.
Meanwhile, he cleared the UGC-NET and qualified for a Junior Research Fellowship in 2023, which allowed him to pursue a PhD at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya with financial support from the central govt.
Determined to crack the MPPSC interview, he joined a coaching group for mock interviews and personality development. "We critiqued each other's communication and body language, which boosted my confidence," he said.
His interview panel asked questions about his startup, the Rewa region, and Prayagraj—his place of higher education. "For questions I didn't know, I admitted it honestly and promised to learn."
Tej scored 80 in the interview and was selected. "I come from a humble background. My father once worked as a labourer in Pune while my mother managed the farm. Today, I'm happy to make them proud."
Now being in the field of education, Tej aims to attain the top positions. "I want to grow in academia and one day serve as a vice-chancellor," he said.

NGO rejuvenates Masaorambu stream near Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: As part of the efforts to restore the ecological and hydrological health of the Noyyal river system and ensure water security, Siruthuli, an NGO, has inaugurated the rejuvenated Masaorambu stream at Madhvarayapuram on the outskirts of Coimbatore. The Masaorambu is one of the 34 perennial feeder streams of the Noyyal river, carrying freshwater from the Western Ghats. Over the years, the stream's flow was impeded by dense vegetation and sedimentation. Vanitha Mohan, managing trustee of Siruthuli, said through a comprehensive restoration effort, 5.7 km of the stream was cleared, desilted and widened to restore its natural flow. Seven check dams were refurbished in Phase 1, creating 10 crore litres of additional water storage capacity. She said this would revive more than 300 acres of previously fallow land, generating an incremental income of Rs 12.5 lakh through renewed cultivation. 'More than 100 farmers in the region are expected to save more than Rs 75 lakh collectively, averaging Rs 75,000 per farmer, by reducing dependency on external water sources. Titan Company Limited is the CSR sponsor of this impactful initiative," she said. Phase 2 will include construction of three new check dams, further augmenting water security and storage. 'The restoration ensures steady freshwater flow and active groundwater recharge, directly benefiting 3,700 acres of farmland across nine villages. This will also provide reliable water access for wildlife," she added. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . ‘Difficult day for all of us at Air India,' says CEO Campbell Wilson, Tata group announces Rs 1 crore for victims' families
Following the tragic crash of an Air India aircraft shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad, the Tata group airline's CEO Campbell Wilson expressed 'deep sorrow', saying that it was a difficult day for everyone at Air India. In his first statement since the Tuesday afternoon crash, Wilson said that the carrier's teams are working around the clock to support the passengers, crew, and their families as well as investigators, apart from working closely with authorities at the accident site to assist in emergency response efforts. He also said that while investigations will take time, the airline is doing everything it can to support those affected. Meanwhile, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran announced that the Tata group will provide Rs 1 crore to the families of those who perished in the crash, and will cover all medical expenses of the injured. An Air India aircraft with 242 people—230 passengers and 12 crew—on board crashed into a residential area near the Ahmedabad airport Tuesday afternoon, resulting in numerous casualties. The exact number of dead and injured is not clear yet. The 11-year-old Boeing 787 aircraft—bearing registration VT-ANB—was operating flight AI-171 between Ahmedabad and London Gatwick airport. This is the first wide-body crash for an Indian airline in four decades. It is also the first crash of a Boeing 787 globally. According to flight tracking data, the signal from the aircraft was lost at an altitude of just 625 feet, moments after take-off. It then descended with a vertical speed of 475 feet per minute and crashed. According to aviation safety regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the pilots gave a Mayday call to the Ahmedabad airport air traffic control (ATC) upon take-off, after which it crashed outside the airport perimeter. 'We are actively working with the authorities on all emergency response efforts. A special team of caregivers from Air India is on their way to Ahmedabad to provide additional support. Investigations will take time, but anything we can do now we are doing. We know that many people are concerned for the welfare of their loved ones. We have set up a special helpline that friends and family can reach us at the number is 1800-569-1444,' Wilson said in a video statement. 'We understand that people are eager for information. Please know that we will continue to share accurate and timely information as soon as we can, but anything we report must be accurate and not speculative. We owe that to everyone involved. For now, our teams are working around the clock to support passengers, crew and their families as well as investigators however we can,' the Air India CEO added. Wilson said that while there are many questions around the crash, he was not in a position to answer all of them at thisi stage. '…but I do want to share the information we have at this time, Air India flight AI-171 operated with a Boeing 787-8 aircraft traveling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick has been involved in an accident after take-off…Of the passengers, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals.
