Beachgoers and first responders in Limon desperately tried to save Warner, but he was pronounced dead.
CPR was performed on him for around 20 minutes, as reported by People.
Costa Rican cops ruled his cause of death as asphyxiation by submersion.
Warner, 54, didn't have vital signs when he was pulled onto the shore and he was taken to a local morgue.
Another man has been left critically injured and he was rushed to the hospital.
Tributes have poured in to Warner and Bill Cosby, who played Theo's dad Cliff Huxtable in the show, said the actor's death reminded him about his son's murder.
Cosby was filming the sitcom in January 1997 when he was told his son Ennis had been shot dead.
Ennis was killed in a botched robbery.
Cosby's rep told TMZ that Warner and Ennis used to socialize when they were children.
'It was shocking,' shamed star Cosby later told the ABC affiliate WPVI-TV as he recalled learning about Warner's death.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner's last TV interview gave rare insight into Bill Cosby and his time on show just weeks before death
Cosby has led the tributes to his late co-star.
'You could depend on Malcolm always going to uh the shelter, to learn his lines, to gather his character to come out and be ready,' he said.
'When the news came, it was shocking. And of course, my thoughts went straight to his mother, who worked so hard.
'She was so wonderful with him.'
Beyonce, Kate Hudson, and Jamie Foxx are among the A-Listers that have paid tribute to the late sitcom star.
Hudson described Warner as someone who was the "kindest and sweetest."
"Rest in power, Malcolm-Jamal Warner. For being a big part of our shared television history," Beyonce wrote on her website.
"You will be missed."

Convention in 1996 Credit: Getty Images - Getty 3 Hogan cuddled Linda at their home in 1991 Credit: Getty First responders raced to Hogan's home in Clearwater, Florida, about 40 minutes outside Tampa, at about 9:51 am after getting reports that he was suffering from cardiac arrest, the City of Clearwater confirmed to The U.S. Sun. He was treated by fire crews at the scene and then rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. The Clearwater Police Department will be holding a briefing at 1:30 pm in an effort to "protect the privacy of the family." Just days before the tragic news, Hogan's ex-wife, Linda Hogan, whom he split with in 2009, shared a throwback picture of the couple at a convention in 1996. In the picture, the now 65-year-old lady stunned in a black costume as she gazed lovingly at her ex. Hogan wore an iconic bandana with his bleached blonde hair peeking through and a bright yellow and red sporty wrestling outfit. "The good old days," Linda wrote in the now-heartwrenching caption. In the comments, fans gushed about the couple and said that they were praying for Hogan to recover from his health battle. Hogan's death came after he suffered from grueling health issues caused by years of weight training and brawling in the WWE ring. Last month, he was hospitalized for neck and back pain, sparking rumors that he was on his deathbed. However, representatives for the star have maintained that his client was healthy throughout his struggles. On Tuesday, Hogan's close personal friend Jimmy Hart gave a health update on X, saying, "Hulk is doing great, doing phenomenal! "Last night at karaoke with Nick was absolutely fantastic, baby!" HULK AND LINDA Hogan was married three times throughout his life, and is survived by his current wife Sky Daily. However, fans were most familiar with second wife Linda as they stared in the popular reality TV show Hogan Knows Best. The two were married in 1983 in a wedding attended by longtime rivals and friends Andre the Giant and Vince McMahon. They went on to have two children, Brooke and Nick, before Linda filed for divorce in 2007. Linda had some bitter feelings toward her ex that she wasn't afraid to share with the media. In March, she posted a video online where she accused Hogan of being a "complete liar" and "sex addict." However, soon after this post, she admitted that despite their differences, Hogan was always a good father. More to follow... The British driver secured four wins and seven podiums with his team this season and it was his first championship in seven seasons in Formula E. Rowland isn't one for the glitz and glamour of motor-sport, and is quiet off the track, preferring to do his talking in the car. He has spent the past week celebrating his title by spending quality time with Harper and his wife Lauren. They even took a trip to Legoland where Rowland couldn't help coach his daughter on the smaller cars, although she was too young to get her driver's license. He said: "It was my daughter's birthday last Tuesday, so I spent the full day at Legoland celebrating I was absolutely knackered by the end of the day! "She wasn't tall enough to get her driver's license but she went on the baby cars and I was asking her to get her head down like they do in go karts it was so funny." Rowland has been known to celebrate his wins with a "few beers" this season, but he will be taking that up a notch with a team trip to Ibiza after this weekend's final race in London. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS He added: "Since we're so close to City airport and all in London together I decided to invite all the engineers away with me. "I just thought it was something different and nice to do for them. Let them have a nice two or three days. Glamorous TikToker Bianca Bustamante gives behind-the-scenes look at a Formula E race week "I wanted to appreciate all the work that the whole team does and it was a gesture to show my appreciation. We can have a bit of fun together." Rowland has a presence in F1, and has been with Alpine for 10-years helping with testing. He also enjoyed a short stint as a junior driver for Williams in 2018. He still has a presence in the sport, mentoring F1 prospect and Red Bull junior driver, Arvid Lindblad. And is good pals with four-time world champion Max Verstappen who wished him luck ahead of Berlin. Rowland added: "He sent me a message on on Saturday night, telling me to score points and calm down a little bit, "Then on Sunday, he told me, well done so yeah, it was really nice for him, because I was feeling pretty down after Saturday's mistake and he reached out. "Just said 'yeah look, you got this, you're doing a good job'." Rowland's most treasured congratulatory message remains from his daughter Harper though. Being a 'girl dad' is his biggest achievement and wife Lauren is pregnant with baby number 2. He added: "At the beginning I always wanted to have a boy but another girl like Harper would be super cute."
