As a working mum of two young kids, the most important quality I look for in toys is the ability to keep my child occupied for chunks of time so I can get things done – whether that's cooking dinner, tidying up, or sending a few work emails.
While it's all too easy to stick the TV on, I've definitely noticed that my eldest child's behaviour can rapidly go downhill afterwards – so screen-free time is much preferred.
When she turned two, we bought her a Toniebox after hearing friends rave about it. It felt like an expensive purchase at the time – but we've certainly got our money's worth. Let me explain why...
What's a Toniebox?
The Toniebox is essentially a durable audio player for kids. You can buy little figures (Tonies) for it which sit on the top of the player and tell stories and sing songs.
There are also other accessories that go with it like night lights (we have the sheep one), headphones and cases for transporting the characters around.
The figures, while not cheap at £14.99 each, double up as toys – my daughter spends 20+ minute chunks playing games with them, while also sitting and listening to the stories and songs when she puts one on top of her Toniebox.
In fact, every bedtime we sit and play 'nursery' with all the characters, where I'm the teacher and have to read them all some stories.
After we've done that, we'll say goodnight – which includes a fairly lengthy process of me saying goodbye to each individual Tonie and us having a chat about her day. Then she'll lie in bed and listen to one (or two, as we discovered during the heatwave) of the Tonies before going to sleep.
She recently got the Anna and ElsaTonies for her third birthday which went down an absolute storm (she's listened to them every night since). She's also a huge fan of Peppa Pig's Bedtime Stories, as well as the Julia Donaldson characters, like the Snail and the Whale, and – of course – the Gruffalo.
Listening to a Tonie before bed has become a bit of a ritual that enables me to go and clean the kitchen or take the bins out, while she winds down. If you find bedtime drags out for a thousand years, a Toniebox might just be your saviour.
The other perk is that kids can listen to it while travelling – ours get car sick, especially if looking at books or watching something on a tablet, but they don't have this problem listening to the Toniebox.
We also take it on holiday with us for moments when our eldest needs a bit of quiet time, and to stick to our bedtime routine as much as possible.
The squishy (and therefore, drop-proof) box is £79.95 and comes in a range of colours – red, blue, green, pink, purple and grey. It's suitable for kids aged three and up, and there are over 250 Tonies to choose from.
Is it more expensive than most 'toys'? Yes. But a moment's peace is priceless when you're a parent – so boy is it worth the money.Related...

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Officially Brings in Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Michael Mando as Scorpion — GeekTyrant

Spider-Man: Brand New Day just leveled up in a big way. With production about to kick off, it's been officially confirmed that Mark Ruffalo and Michael Mando are joining the upcoming Marvel Studios film, and it sounds like both will play key roles in the story. Ruffalo will reprise his role as Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, a role he's been crushing since The Avengers . From Thor: Ragnarok to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law , he's been a consistent force in the MCU and it's awesome to see him now enter Spider-Man's corner of the universe. Mando returns as Mac Gargan, the character he first portrayed in Spider-Man: Homecoming . But this time, he's expected to go full villain and finally become the Scorpion. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gargan will be a major part of a big action sequence set to be filmed in Glasgow, Scotland. Word is that he's being transported in a DODC convoy when he's suddenly targeted by The Punisher. That's when Spider-Man jumps into the fray. Fans will remember Gargan's brief appearance in Homecoming , where he tried to pry Spider-Man's identity from The Vulture after getting seriously injured. He's presumably been locked up ever since, and while we don't yet know how he gets his Scorpion gear, it sounds like we'll finally see him unleashed. The film is shaping up to be an intense street-level brawl, and Marvel is clearly bringing in a strong mix of characters for that vibe, which include Jon Bernthal's Punisher. As the outlet notes, 'You can bet that, in the mighty Marvel manner, Spider-Man, Punisher and Hulk will all fight one another before figuring out who the real bad guys are.' Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently offered some insight into the direction of Spider-Man: Brand New Day , and it's exactly what fans hoped for after No Way Home reset the character's world. "I think there's a promise at the end of No Way Home , that for as sad as it is that Peter is forgotten by everyone in his life, we are seeing for the first time in the Tom Holland Spider-Man stories him being a proper Spider-Man. 'Him being by himself, dedicated to saving the city, and dealing with, for lack of better terms, street-level crime, as opposed to world-ending events." He added, "So when you do that, you say, okay, who are the other street-level characters that we've never seen him interact with? And of course, I love that The Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic." Feige also teased what's inspiring the movie's direction: "That great cover. I don't want to say too much, but Destin, I will say too much, Destin is doing an amazing job right now on that movie, which starts shooting very soon. And he's got eight or nine comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie, which is super cool." Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton ( Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ) and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Liza Colón-Zayas. The film swings into theaters on July 31, 2026.

Man Utd club shop bans supporters from printing names of legendary trio on back of shirts due to key licensing issue

Fans cannot print name of three legends on their shirt United do not own player trademarks Sign at club shop informs confused fans Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Reported by Manchester Evening News, the three players in question are legendary No. 7s Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Eric Cantona. United do not own the trademark to any of the trio of former players' names, which means they are not licensed to print them on the back of shirts. THE BIGGER PICTURE The report states that this has been the case for several years and not just at United, as Real Madrid do not have the rights to print the legendary Ronaldo's name either, despite his status as one of the club's greatest-ever players. With this in mind, the recent craze around retro football shirts makes sense as it gives fans the chance to sport the names of their favourite players from the past on their backs, on shirts which were printed at a time when the player in question was at the club. In the case of Ronaldo, Beckham and Cantona, these shirts must be very rare to find indeed. WHAT FANS HAVE SAID United fans expressed their confusion at the licensing rule on social media. One fan said on X: "That's really weird." "Modern football just gets weirder," another added. A third said: "What if I call my son Beckham and he wants his own name on his shirt?" Another stated: "How can you copyright a name lol I'm pretty sure there's more people with those names." WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD? The Red Devils face Everton and Fiorentina in their final pair of pre-season fixtures before Mikel Arteta's Arsenal visit Old Trafford on August 17. Ruben Amorim's side will be looking for a major improvement on their unprecedented struggles last campaign and may look to complete further transfer business before the campaign gets underway.

Glam, Easy, a Little Bit Sleazy: Electric Purple Is Fall's Color-To-Watch

'Electric purple' isn't a shade I'd say has ever been a serious part of my own sartorial lexicon. In saying that, there was a time before Spanish it-girl brand Paloma Wool was the coolly restrained, subversive Paloma Wool we know it as today, when they were putting out jewel-toned corduroy jumpsuits. One in particular was a brilliant Skittles purple shade, in a style that would have fit better on the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band cover art than Barcelona's Eixample streets. That balshie, bold color palette has long been scrubbed away from Paloma's now cool-toned IG aesthetic, and I sold the jumpsuit on Depop for cheap when my own personal take on color theory said the same. After that brief dalliance, I have not, for some time, seen myself as a purple girl—of any hue. Aubergine? Maybe sometimes. Lilac? Hell no. Royal purple? Not yet. And then the fall 2025 runways began to pepper in electric purple. While the previous season was defined by lithe, lighter shades of lilac and lavender—alongside the requisite butter yellows and cornflower blues—fall 2025 goes deeper, more sumptuous. At Gucci—an interim collection following the departure of Alessandro Michele—there were some era-hopping Gucci-isms: Michele's moddish '60s shapes, De Sarno's silky slips, and glam details that recalled Tom Ford's '90s tenure. But a continuous thread was a Daphne Blake-esque purple; in pea coats, sheer dresses, billowing blouses, and a monochromatic heels and stockings combo. 'A continuum of craft, taste, and culture that passes through time,' is how a press release described the show—the jewel color defined a kooky yet stoic sense of glamor for a house in flux. The color purple has long been associated with royalty and spirituality, and electric purple is a way various designers and houses chose to express their own version of power and—once again—louder luxury. At Miu Miu, it was stomping go-go boots. At Alexander McQueen, Seán McGirr took it a few shades more gothy for his Oscar Wilde-inspired characters in eggplant-y ruffles. Nina Ricci by Harris Reed revelled in the women who danced the nights of the '70s away, with sensuous fabrics, opulent jewel-colored faux-furs, animal-print slips, strong shouldered velvet blazers. Colleen Allen's irreverant collection celebrated the female form and spirit, proposing a self-described 'divisive' purple among celery greens and cerulean blues. Purple and fluoro-flecked Fair Isle clothed Anna Sui's 1930s screwball comedy heroines. Photo: Umberto Fratini / Photo: Alessandro Lucioni / Photo: Courtesy of Gucci Photo: Salvatore Dragone / Sumptuous purples have continued to find their way into the wardrobes of celebrities enjoying this louder sense of style right now: Timothee Chalamet, not yet done with Wonka, doing some 'vintaje' shopping in an open purple shirt; Meryl Streep as the stern, severely stylish Miranda Priestly in Dries Van Noten; Tracee Ellis Ross color-blocking with Barney purple and acid yellow; Pamela Anderson in a regal gown to top off her '60s press run style.
