Bayern Munich 'move ahead of Arsenal in race to sign Nico Williams' - as Bundesliga champions make Spain star their 'top summer target'
Bayern Munich have reportedly moved ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign Nico Williams after making the winger their top target for the summer transfer window.
The German champions were dealt a blow last month with the news that Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz preferred a move to join Premier League winners Liverpool.
While the Reds are seeking to finalise a deal for Wirtz, Bayern have reportedly turned their interests elsewhere.
BILD reporter Christian Falk stated that Bayern have interest in both Athletic Club's Williams and PSG 's Bradley Barcola.
Bayern are reportedly set to press ahead with their interest in Williams, with chiefs prepared to trigger his €60million (£51m) release clause.
Williams is said to be earning around £6.7million per year at Athletic Club, but the Spain international is claimed to have indicated he will lower his demands to secure a move to Bayern.
The German champions, led by Vincent Kompany, have reportedly edged ahead of Arsenal in the race for Williams, with Mikel Arteta's side also credited with an interest in the winger
Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in Williams should a deal prove financially viable.
The 22-year-old winger played 45 times in all competitions for Athletic Club last season, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists.
Williams had played a key role in Spain's European Championships triumph last year, starting six of their seven matches in Germany.
The winger scored Spain's opening goal in the 2-1 final victory over England in Berlin.
Williams has so far made 28 appearances for the national team and has scored six goals.
Bayern would need to complete a deal today for Williams to be eligible to feature at the Club World Cup, making a move after the special summer transfer window seem a more likely prospect.

Michael O'Neill: Northern Ireland feeling positive ahead of World Cup qualifiers
Isaac Price fired O'Neill's side in front after 36 minutes and later made a key goal-line clearance as Northern Ireland won a match in which they finished with 10 men for the first time since the famous victory over Spain in 1982. It was perhaps not the match O'Neill had envisaged going into the night as Northern Ireland spent the vast majority of the final half-an-hour defending following Spencer's dismissal, but the win felt more significant given it came in the face of adversity. Morning, GAWA 💚🤍 Thank you to all 18,021 of you that made it another special night under the lights 👏🏻 #GAWA — Northern Ireland (@NorthernIreland) June 11, 2025 O'Neill will take the positives from that as he turns attention to September's qualifiers away to Luxembourg and Germany. 'We approach it in a good place and we approach it with optimism,' O'Neill said of the qualifying campaign. 'I think there's a belief in there that, yes, we will be able to go and take points at this level. We look forward to it.' O'Neill's squad remains both young and in large parts inexperienced. Twelve of the 25-man squad for Tuesday's game were 21 or under, and more than half remain in single figures for the number of caps they have. Having been drawn alongside Germany, Slovakia and Luxembourg in Group A, Northern Ireland's realistic target is second place and a play-off spot, but O'Neill's optimism extends well beyond the next six games. 'I know the team will continue to progress beyond the World Cup campaign,' he said. 'It's just natural that the team will continue to progress. The more they play international football, the better they'll get at it. 'That's all they need – they need more and more exposure, they need more minutes under their belts. Will the world Cup campaign come too soon for this group? I don't know. The proof will be in the games.' As had been expected ahead of the fixture, Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Denmark in Copenhagen showed where Northern Ireland need to improve out of possession. Spencer's red card turned Tuesday's friendly into a similar exercise for much of the second half. When asked what his main takeaways from the week were, O'Neill said: 'I think we're going to go into games where we're going to come under a lot of pressure, teams that will come and press us. 'We have to be better than what we've shown in both Copenhagen and then here in terms of how we deal with that. But the other side of our team is our ability to play on the counter-attack, our ability to run without the ball, our desire in our shape and structure. 'We've a lot of things, when we look at the two games, where we'll find a lot of positives. But we're always looking for it to get better. This is still very early in the progression of this team.'

‘We don't have much influence' – Tottenham star breaks ranks as he labels Ange Postecoglou sacking ‘strange'
MICKY VAN DE VEN has branded Tottenham's brutal axing of Ange Postecoglou as a 'strange decision'. Postecoglou was shown the door just 16 days after ending the club's 17-year trophy drought with Europa League glory in Bilbao. 2 2 The North Londoners are very close to appointing Brentford boss Thomas Frank as his successor. Yet the decision to axe the Aussie is understood to have left many of the players disappointed given the success they enjoyed in Europe. And while on international duty with the Netherlands, centre-back Van de Ven, 24, said: 'As players, we don't have much to say about that. 'Of course, he was the first coach in a long time to win a trophy and have success at Spurs. 'So, if you look at it that way, it's definitely a strange decision. 'But it's a decision made by the club, and we don't have much say in that, so we'll see what happens next. 'We're of course seeing some rumpus about the Brentford manager likely becoming the next one. 'So yes, it's a decision by the club that we don't have much influence over.' Daniel Levy decided to wield the axe after an awful Premier League campaign which saw Spurs finish 17th. They lost a club-record 22 league games, which was the first time ever a Prem team has managed that and NOT been relegated. BBC star shares shock theory as to why Tottenham waited exactly 16 days after Europa League win to sack Ange Postecoglou And yet Postecoglou ended the club's silverware curse with their Europa win, which also got them back into the Champions League. Most of the Spurs squad have been effusive in their praise of Postecoglou on social media following his sacking and what he did for them as players and as people. Van de Ven, who missed much of the league campaign through injury, added: 'I think a lot of players had a good relationship with him. Ange Breaks Silence On Tottenham Sacking ANGE Postecoglou issued a statement just moments after being axed. It read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. "I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. "I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. "It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. "And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. "A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.' 'And of course, like I said, he was the first coach in a long time to bring success to Spurs. 'That also shows he has a certain quality. It also means he has a winning mentality - one hundred per cent. 'So from that point of view, you'd naturally say it's strange that he was sacked. 'But of course, what we showed in the league was unacceptable. 'That, however, could have been due to several factors… it wouldn't have just been the coach.'
