Naveen Reddy: I believe emotion is bigger than action
Naveen Reddy B may be just one film old as a director—with Khaki marking his debut—but he brings over 20 years of experience in the Kannada film industry. Now, with his second film Maadeva set to release on June 6, he hopes this marks a defining moment in his journey: from an assistant director working behind the scenes to a storyteller confidently bringing his own vision to the screen. 'I've worked with many directors and across all kinds of films,' says Naveen. 'Luck and time need to meet. Until then, you evolve.' Unlike Khaki, Naveen has written the story of Maadeva himself. The film follows the life of a hangman, portrayed by Vinod Prabhakar, but according to the director, it is not about the technicalities of capital punishment. 'It's not about procedures. It's about the hangman's emotional life—his family, his struggles, his connection with society. It's brutal, yes, but also deeply human,' Naveen explains.
Vinod, known for his image as an action star, has been given a multi-dimensional role in this film. 'I believe emotion is universal—bigger than action. In the last 40 minutes, audiences won't see Vinod Prabhakar—they'll see Maadeva,' he says confidently. Each actor was cast with intent. Sonal Monteiro plays a layered female lead, while Srinagar Kitty, Shruti, and Malashree bring complex shades to their characters. 'Shruti was surprised I approached her for a negative role. Malashree has a pivotal part that involves action. Even Cockroach Sudhir, though his screen time is brief, plays a vital role.' Vinod's physical transformation was meticulously crafted, including wearing lenses throughout the shoot. 'That alone was a challenge—shooting day after day with lenses. But it helped to show a completely different side of him.'
Maadeva releases alongside Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, but Naveen remains unfazed. 'Yes, Kamal sir has a huge fan base, but in the end, it's about the story. Today, there's a shortage of strong Kannada films. Audiences are eager for meaningful local cinema. I believe they'll judge us fairly on the first day, first show.' Maadeva has stunt direction by Different Danny, Real Satish, and Vikram More, cinematography by Balakrishna Thota, editing by Vijay M. Kumar; and art direction by Guna.

Language row: Still no apology, K'taka HC tells Haasan, accepts implead application from Kannada org
Bengaluru, Actor Kamal Haasan has not yet issued an apology for his controversial remarks on Kannada language, observed the Karnataka High Court on Friday and directed the producer of his latest film 'Thug Life' to respond to an application filed by Kannada Sahitya Parishat. The application sought intervention in the producer's pleas against the ban on the film's release in the state. The Parishat wanted to place before the Court, the constitutional, cultural and linguistic concerns arising from the statements made by Haasan, particularly from the perspective of protecting the identity, dignity and historical legacy of the Kannada language and culture. The case stems from a statement made by Haasan during the audio release of the film, where he had said that Kannada was born out of Tamil Language. The remark led to a huge controversy and Karnataka leaders and the Film Chamber of the state demanded that the actor withdraw his statement and tender an apology. However, he declined to apologise and opted against releasing the movie in Karnataka on June 5, when it was released worldwide. On Friday, the counsel for production house Raaj Kamal Films International submitted that the actor would need a week's time to file objections to the Kannada Sahitya Parishat's impleadment application. Justice M Nagaprasanna, who heard the case, posted the matter to June 20. Earlier, Raaj Kamal Films International filed a petition seeking adequate security for the movie's release in the state. When the matter came up for hearing before Justice Nagaprasanna on June 3, counsel for the petitioner maintained that there was no malice and an apology was not warranted and submitted that the screening of the movie would not be insisted upon in the state till the issue gets resolved through dialogue. During the hearing, Haasan came in for strong criticism from the court for his remark, and the court observed that a "single apology could have resolved the situation".

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix to re-negotiate Rs 130 crore Thug Life OTT deal after Kamal Haasan starrer's BO failure
Thug Life starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR hit the big screens on June 5, 2025, but has failed to stand out at the box office. Now, the OTT giant Netflix is re-negotiating its post-theatrical streaming deal. In an exclusive report, we at Pinkvilla learned that Netflix is planning to negotiate a different deal for the movie's OTT release. The agreement is being reconsidered with a 20-25% drop from the previous quoted amount. Earlier, we had reported that the digital rights of the movie were sold to the OTT platform for a whopping Rs 130 crores. The huge number was quoted due to Haasan and Mani Ratnam reuniting after the iconic Nayakan, but it was met with negative reviews on release. Following the mixed reactions, the movie failed to attract audiences to the big screens, resulting in disappointing box office revenue. With Netflix re-negotiating the OTT deal, we'll have to wait and see where their conclusion will reach. There were also reports that the movie would be streamed after 4 weeks since theatrical release, as opposed to the earlier-mentioned eight weeks. Talking about the movie, Thug Life is a gangster actioner focusing on the story of a Rangaraaya Sakthivel, a crime boss based in New Delhi. Following a shootout, the man adopts a young boy named Amaran and raises him as his own. As his foster son grows up and becomes a formidable member of the mafia, the leadership dynamic changes. Now, with a dark animosity brewing between father and son, Sakthivel is dead set on revenge. Aside from the main cast, the movie features an ensemble cast that includes Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and more in key roles. Moving ahead, Kamal Haasan is next set to appear in the tentatively titled KH237 with AnbArivu duo serving as the directors. On the other hand, STR is speculated to soon join hands with director Vetrimaaran for an action venture. He also has multiple films in the lineup.
