RM30 Gawai Dayak cash vouchers gesture of goodwill, says Yap

Borneo Post14-05-2025

Yap said the cash vouchers were meant to be a gesture of goodwill.
KUCHING (May 14): The distribution of RM30 Gawai cash vouchers was meant to be a gesture of goodwill, not a substitute for the broader development needs of the Dayak community, said Wilfred Yap.
The Kota Sentosa assemblyman said the gesture was never intended to diminish the profound cultural significance of celebration.
He was responding to former Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) president Bobby William's statement that the quantum was an 'insult to the pride and dignity of the Dayak community'.
Yap said he deeply respected Gawai Dayak as a celebration of heritage, unity, and identity.
The specifically for Dayak villages in his constituency, sought to provide modest assistance during the festive season, he said.
He agreed with Bobby that the Dayak community deserve more than symbolic assistance and sustainable progress in education, infrastructure, healthcare, as well as economic opportunities.
He pointed out that he had allocated significant amounts under his Rural Transformation Project and Minor Rural Project allocations to the six Dayak villages in his constituency.
Yap added he remains committed to advocating long-term improvements in Kota Sentosa and welcomes constructive dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure that future initiatives align with the community's dignity and aspirations.
Bobby had labelled the RM30 cash vouchers 'a glaring symbol of disrespect, insensitivity, and political patronage that undermines the cultural significance and dignity of the Dayak people'. Bobby William Gawai Dayak vouchers lead Wilfred Yap

RM250,000 concrete drain completed at Lrg Semaba 7 to tackle flooding issues

Yap (second left) and others seen at the site of the completed concrete drain at the T-junction of Lorong Semaba 7. KUCHING (June 7): The construction of a concrete drain at the T-junction of Lorong Semaba 7 has been completed at the cost of RM250,000, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap. He said the rural transformation programme (RTP) project had resolved long-standing drainage and flooding issues in the area. 'With the completion of this phase, residents in the neighbourhood can now look forward to improved water flow, reduced flood risk and better overall living conditions,' he said in a statement. He emphasised that the initiative is more than just a basic infrastructure upgrade. 'It is a commitment to ensure that every part of Kota Sentosa is not left behind in terms of infrastructure. Too many of our older residential areas still suffer from outdated or insufficient basic amenities. 'I am working tirelessly to correct that,' he added. Yap also revealed that the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has conducted survey and assessment works on the opposite side of the same T-junction, as well as another stretch of earth drains along Lorong Semaba 11. The proposed next phase will involve the construction of additional concrete drains, with a combined estimated cost of RM400,000, and MPP engineers are currently preparing the Bill of Quantities to move the project forward. Reaffirming his commitment to infrastructure development, Yap said he will continue to advocate for improvements under the RTP and other government allocations. 'Development cannot be concentrated in one area. As your elected representative, I will continue to press for improvements – street by street, lorong (lane) by lorong – so that all residents of Kota Sentosa enjoy the benefits of proper, modern infrastructure.' Yap also highlighted that his efforts are aligned with the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government's focus on inclusive development and narrowing the infrastructure gap, particularly in semi-urban and suburban communities. He emphasised that infrastructure is not just about roads and drains. 'It's about dignity, safety and improving the quality of life for the people I serve. I will not rest until every kampung, taman and lorong in Kota Sentosa sees tangible progress,' he pledged. concrete drain flooding jalan semaba lead Wilfred Yap

Gawai Dayak: Tiong joins festive celebrations at longhouses in Bintulu

BINTULU (June 3): Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, together with his delegation from the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), celebrated the first day of Gawai Dayak by visiting six longhouses in Kemena and Suai. The six longhouses visited were Rumah Inggol Ak Ranggong, Rumah Changgai Ak Dali, Rumah Joe Ak Merudi, Rumah Clarence Ak Unjun, Rumah Ngalantar Ak Sengaling and Rumah Tulie Ak Aji. Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP, described each visit as vibrant with tradition, music and heartfelt hospitality, which made the guests feel like part of the longhouse family. 'Gawai Dayak, while symbolising the harvest, also serves as a heartfelt reunion. Many Dayak individuals working or living in other regions return home to celebrate with family and friends. 'Visitors were treated to traditional delicacies, homemade tuak (rice wine), and langkau (distilled rice spirit), accompanied by the melodious sounds of the sape, a traditional Sarawakian lute that added to the captivating cultural ambiance,' he said. One of the highlights of the visit was the officiation of the Women's Bureau at Rumah Inggol. Throughout the journey, he also made time to engage directly with longhouse residents, listening attentively to the challenges they face, including issues related to livelihoods and daily living. He noted each concern and pledged to follow up on them, urging the community to maintain close contact with his team based in Bintulu for further collaboration and resolution. 'Despite my limited presence in the Bintulu office due to ministry commitments, I remain in constant communication with my officers to stay informed on local developments and issues,' he added. He emphasised that he would continue coordinating, following up, and making decisions to address concerns as efficiently as possible. 'This year's Gawai celebration was also made more special by the presence of friends from Peninsular Malaysia, especially those of Chinese descent who came to experience Sarawak's unique cultural festivities firsthand. 'It not only deepens understanding and mutual recognition between different regions but also fosters a harmonious coexistence of cultures. 'Additionally, it supports the growth of related sectors such as tourism, which contributes to national prosperity and economic progress,' he said.
