Tax evasion a national crime, take stern action against fake firms: CM

1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to act against shell companies and fake firms that are deriving undue benefits against the rules. He said that such acts were an attempt to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders and the matter should be dealt with seriously. The CM, while conducting a high-level review of the state tax department, directed officials to ensure transparency in tax collection and adopt a policy of technological efficiency and strict enforcement. Calling the act of such companies 'unforgivable', Yogi said, "Tax evasion is a national crime that negatively impacts development plans and welfare schemes." Stressing that GST is a consumer-based tax system, he noted that areas with higher population density were naturally expected to generate increased tax revenues for the state coffers. He instructed officials to develop special strategies for zones where tax collection is below average. Yogi directed that information on suspicious firms registered under central GST (CGST) be shared with the higher authorities in Delhi for cancellation of their registration. He ordered in-depth departmental investigations for firms under state GST (SGST). Upon encountering anomalies, officials would be given a free hand to register a criminal case and prosecute such people accordingly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Such inspections are essential to ensure that genuine businesses can operate fairly and without interference." During the meeting, officials informed the CM that nearly Rs 18,162 crore was collected through GST and VAT tax components in April and May of the 2025-26 financial year. The target for the year assigned to the department is Rs 1.76 lakh crore. Appreciating the progress, the CM directed officials to achieve the target through regular monitoring. The CM praised the achievements of 14 zones, including Lucknow, Ayodhya, Bareilly, Agra, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Meerut, Jhansi, and Saharanpur divisions, for achieving increased targets. In contrast, officials in Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Etawah, Aligarh, and Moradabad were reprimanded for collecting less than 50% of the stipulated target. He said that a detailed report should be prepared covering the role of officials deputed in the low-performing regions and sent to the govt. He emphasized that revenue was not just a number, but the foundation of development, and every officer should carry out their duties with responsibility and sensitivity. "In areas with weak tax collection, additional, joint, and deputy commissioners should personally engage with traders to build trust, cooperation, and a sense of compliance among the taxpayer community," said Yogi.

Delhi: 9-year-old sexually assaulted, killed, body stuffed in bag

In a gruesome murder that unfolded on Saturday evening, a nine-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered by her 30-year-old neighbour at his house near Dayalpur in northeast Delhi, after which he stuffed her body in a suitcase to hide it, police officers said on Sunday. The accused went absconding shortly after the girl's family started searching for her. Police have identified him and have initiated a search, officers said. The grisly crime led to widespread outrage in the area, with the family members of the girl and locals staging a protest. Security personnel were deployed in the area to ensure law and order, officers said. According to police and the family members, the girl, a Class 5 student at a local government school and a resident of Dayalpur, left her house at around 7pm to give 'ice to another relative who lives nearby. While on her way, the accused, who lives in a second floor flat in a six-storey building in the area, allegedly asked the girl to come to his house on the pretext of delivering his house keys which had fallen on the road, police said. Locals and her family alleged that he had deliberately thrown the keys to convince the girl to come. Around 7.30pm, when the girl did not return, the family enquired about her from the relative, but they told him that she had not come to their house. The family then began a search. The family said they did not know who the original owner of the house was. The accused took advantage of the fact and absconded, said a police officer, asking not to be named. When the family came to know about the man's disappearance, they immediately broke open the door of his house. On entering, they found a suitcase on the floor. When they opened it, they found the girl's body stuffed inside, with injury marks on her lips and face. 'She was unconscious and unresponsive. She was partially undressed, and bleeding from her genitalia. We rushed her to a nearby nursing home, where doctors declared her dead. On examination, they found that she was sexually assaulted,' the girl's 42-year-old father said. Joint commissioner of police (east) Vijay Kumar said they were informed at 8.41pm Saturday. Police reached the spot, and found the girl had been taken to a hospital by her father, where she was declared brought dead. 'Prima facie, doctors observed visible injuries on her face and alleged sexual assault,' he said. Police suspect that the girl died due to smothering or strangulation. The exact reason will be established on the basis of a pending autopsy report. A case of murder and sexual assault was registered under sections 103 and 66 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Police said the accused is mini-goods vehicle driver, married and is originally from Hapur in UP. 'Teams are conducting raids to nab the accused, who has been identified,' said Kumar. The girl is survived by her parents, grandparents and two younger brothers. The crime sparked outrage in the area — locals and the girl's relatives allegedly vandalised the house of the accused on Saturday night, while on Sunday, nearly 200 people staged a protest at Dayalpur Nala Road, disrupting traffic movement. Security personnel, including personnel from Tripura State Rifles, were deployed in the neighbourhood. Political parties also reacted to the grisly crime. The AAP criticised the ruling BJP — former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said the law and order situation has worsened under the current regime. While Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva too condemned the crime and demanded arrest of the accused, he hit back at the AAP for politicising the issue. 'To reduce these incidents to mere law and order issues is political cunningness.'

Punjab govt struggles to translate central laws into Punjabi

1 2 3 Patiala: The Punjab govt's prolonged struggle to translate key central laws into Punjabi has come under fresh scrutiny, with activists and rural workers voicing frustration over years of delay. Despite repeated demands and official commitments, critical legislation such as the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) remain untranslated, creating barriers to legal clarity and access for Punjabi-speaking citizens. The issue gained renewed attention after a group of rural labourers from Nabha encountered confusion over the interpretation of the English word "may" in the MGNREGA Act during a dispute with the local administration. Their request for a Punjabi version of the Act was denied, prompting them to file a Right to Information (RTI) application. With no response, the matter is now scheduled for hearing before the Punjab State Information Commission on June 25. This is not the first time the commission has intervened on such issues. Activist Vijay Walia, who was advocating for the Punjabi translation of the BOCW Act since 2022, revealed that multiple hearings were held over the years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "Every time, the govt claims the Act is being translated by the Language Department and universities, but nothing concrete has emerged," Walia said. At one point, the language department even issued a written statement citing staff shortages as the reason for the delay. In 2023, the Estimates Committee of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha pressed for an expedited translation, prompting the labour department to seek assistance from Punjabi University. However, the translation is yet to be completed. In a response submitted in March 2024, the BOCW Welfare Board — chaired by the chief minister — told the Commission that once the translation is ready, it will be reviewed by the Vidhan Sabha's Legal Cell and then presented to the Cabinet for approval before being officially notified in Punjabi. Despite these assurances, there was no official notification to date. Meanwhile, the Democratic MGNREGA Front has also entered the fray and is set to begin its own hearings on the lack of a Punjabi translation of the MGNREGA Act starting June. For many, this delay underscores a broader systemic neglect toward Punjabi as an administrative and legal language in Punjab itself. With legal interpretations hanging in the balance, stakeholders are now hoping that pressure from civil society and the Information Commission will push the govt toward swift action.
