SHANNON Matthews' mum stunned the nation when cops uncovered she had plotted the kidnap of her own daughter.
The evil mother concocted her diabolical plan, with the help of the late Michael Donovan, in February 2008 in the West Yorkshire town of Dewsbury.

She reported her nine-year-old daughter missing and sparked a 24-day search which cost West Yorkshire Police £3.2million and involved hundreds in the local community.
Little Shannon was eventually found in the base of a divan bed at Donovan's flat.
Donovan was the uncle of Karen Matthews' then-boyfriend Craig Meehan.
It's thought the pair devised the fake kidnapping in a bid to claim the £50,000 reward money for eventually "finding" Shannon.
They had planned to release the schoolgirl, "discover her" then take her to a police station and claim the reward before splitting.
Donovan and Matthews were sentenced to eight years in jail each for the kidnapping.
In April 2024, Donovan died from throat cancer.
Meanwhile convicted paedophile Craig Meehan, and Karen's ex-boyfriend of five years, was never charged in connection with the abduction.
He was however charged and found guilty of possessing child abuse images after detectives seized computer equipment from the house they shared at the time in Dewsbury.
Meehan, then 22, was jailed in 2008 for 20 weeks.

Now in a new documentary, The Hunt for Shannon Matthews | Mother Kidnaps Own Daughter, a former friend of Karen made a shocking claim.
Petra Jamieson revealed a possible motive for the unthinkable plot.
She said: "Did Karen know that Craig [Shannon's stepdad] had all those images of his computer?
"Maybe she did. Maybe that's the reason she did what she did. To get Shannon away from him."

This comes after police revealed chilling footage of the moment Karen Matthews admitted she lied about Shannon's disappearance.
She said she didn't tell police were Shannon was as she was scared "everybody would have a go at [her] for it".
The mum-of-six's shocking admission came after Shannon was found drugged and tethered in a relative's grubby flat.
In the disturbing interview Karen says she phoned police "so nobody would suspect her" after her daughter vanished.
At one point the detective asks Karen if she phones police as "part of an act to make it look like she was missing, when she really knew she wasn't missing"- and the mum agrees this is what she had done.
When the detective asks why she didn't tell police where Shannon was when they came to the house, the bleary-eyed mum says: "Because I was in front of everybody and everybody would have had a go at me for it."
She then tries to backtrack, claiming she "knew Shannon was somewhere, but didn't know where".
Matthews previously confessed to her role in the despicable scheme to pal Natalie Brown, another neighbour Julie Bushby and a police officer.
Detective Constable Paul Kettlewell found Shannon hiding under a bed, tied up with a rope and drugged.
As he retraced his footsteps for a BBC documentary, DC Kettlewell said: "When we gained a landing we found a further door that was locked.
"And then I heard Shannon's voice from within this bedroom. I clearly heard her say 'stop it you're frightening me now'.
"Although I knew I'd heard her, I didn't know where she was. And then I became aware of movement within the bed.
"As I went across to the far side of the bed, Shannon's head appeared on that side. I reached over, picked Shannon up and carried her out. I couldn't believe that I'd found her.
"We had Shannon and she was alive, I just couldn't believe it."
The policeman added: "I asked her where Mike was. She said: 'He was where I was.' I said: 'In the house?' And she said: 'Under the bed.'"
Following the horrific ordeal Shannon was taken off Karen and placed in the care of her local authority after the trial.
She was given a new identity and is now living with a new family.

Hundreds of protesters take to streets near migrant hotel after ‘asylum seeker guest' arrested on suspicion of assault

The incident occurred in the Isle of Dogs on Wednesday night before he was detained by nearby members of the public. He was arrested by police on suspicion of common assault and he remains in custody. MailOnline reported that the man was a migrant staying in a Canary Wharf hotel. He reportedly entered the woman's house after being told to "go back to the hotel" where anti-migrant protestors were gathered. The 22-year-old woman whose flat he entered was arrested on Wednesday evening. Channay Augustus has since been charged with a number of offences including possession of an offensive weapon, affray, assault on an emergency worker, common assault and possession of cannabis. The affray and common assault charge relate to an incident at the Britannia Hotel in Marsh Wall which occurred on Wednesday evening. It concerned an alleged attack on a security guard at the hotel. She is due to appear in court later this morning. The Britannia Hotel has been the subject of recent protests after it was used for migrants arriving into Britain. It was closed to paying customers and converted into taxpayer-funded 'surge' accommodation for illegal arrivals in the UK. Earlier this week a coach load of asylum seekers were seen running into the four-star establishment under the cover of darkness. The Sun previously reported how mattresses, drinks and bed frames were shipped into hotel, which branded itself as the 'perfect' place for tourists to spend a weekend. 9 A migrant in his 20s was arrested for common assault after entering a woman's flat on Friday in the Isle of Dogs Credit: George Cracknell Wright 9 The Britannia Hotel has been the subject of recent protests Credit: George Cracknell Wright 9 Huge banners have been displayed reading: 'We're not far right but we're not far wrong... stop the boats' Credit: George Cracknell Wright The 500-room hotel – said to have 'superb views over London' – was designated for asylum seekers in a move that has angered anti-migrant protesters who staged peaceful demonstrations outside. Earlier this month, the first arrivals saw about 40 male asylum seekers sent to the hotel by coach, with most dressed in grey tracksuits. The first arrivals were taken in at around 1.40am to be given rooms. They were helped by masked security guards working as private contractors for the Home Office. The use of the flash financial district hotel, one of around 210 hotels in use for asylum housing, was previously branded as farcical and an 'insult' to taxpayers. When open to the public, a standard room had cost as much as £425 a night – though it will cost the Home Office £81 a night. Amenities include a games room with a pool table and gym, though it is unclear if migrants will be allowed to use them. An indoor pool and sauna are thought to have been shut down. A Tower Hamlets Council spokesman told The Sun previously: 'We are aware of the Government's decision to use the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf to provide temporary accommodation for asylum seekers. 'It is important that the Government ensures that there is a full package of support for those staying at the hotel. We are working with the Home Office and partners to make sure that all necessary safety and safeguarding arrangements are in place." The Home Office previously said: 'We inherited a broken asylum system from the Tories with costs spiralling out of control. 'As part of the plan to restore order and close all asylum hotels by the end of the parliament, we are boosting border security, substantially increasing removals of those with no right to be here. 'We are also tackling the Tories' wasteful contracts by ending the use of more expensive accommodation and moving to cheaper options.' 9 The Britannia has been designated for asylum seekers Credit: George Cracknell Wright 9 Earlier this month, the first arrivals saw about 40 male asylum seekers sent to the hotel by coach Credit: George Cracknell Wright 9 Use of the hotel to house asylum seekers has been branded as farcical and an 'insult' to taxpayers Credit: George Cracknell Wright More to follow... 'Karen Matthews made me feel sorry for her - here's the reason why'

Karen Matthews' former family liaison officer - during the 24 days her daughter Shannon disappeared - has revealed shocking glimpses into what the vile mum was like behind closed doors A woman who served as the family liaison officer to Karen Matthews after her nine-year-old daughter Shannon went missing has revealed how the mum made the worker feel sorry for her. ‌ Nine-year-old Shannon Matthews vanished on 19 February 2008 in West Yorkshire, which sparked a huge police investigation and community search effort for almost a month, in a case that gripped the nation. In a shocking conclusion the girl was found alive at a house belonging to Michael Donovan - the uncle of her mother Karen's boyfriend Craig Meehan - and it later transpired Karen had planned to kidnap her daughter to make money from the public. ‌ ‌ A former family liaison officer for West Yorkshire Police, Christine Freeman, has now given a glimpse into what the notorious mum was like behind closed doors. Freeman was by the family's side throughout the shocking case and shared her first impressions of the mum. Freeman said: "The first thing as a family liaison officer when you go out to a house to meet a member of the family is really to try and put them at ease." The officer shared how the mum made the worker feel sorry for her in that first encounter. Freeman added: "When I walked into Karen and Craig's house (her former boyfriend), Karen came across as a grieving mum. Her eyes were blackened underneath as if she had not slept. "She did have my sympathy. Her support network consisted of Shannon's stepdad Craig and a few friends locally. We didn't see anything of Karen's close family members but the community themselves came together magnificently." The liaison officers special insight into the family and the shocking case will be featured in a new two-part Prime Video documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, set to air in the UK and Ireland on Sunday (17 August). ‌ This new series will look into Shannon's 24-day disappearance which the UK came to find out was a horror kidnapping scheme masterminded by Karen, her boyfriend and his uncles. They concocted the vile plan in hopes of claiming a £50,000 reward. Christine revealed other unusual things the mum told police during the manhunt for the nine-year-old. During one interview about her daughter, Karen told investigators: "She is out there somewhere in a nice warm environment but the person who's got her is not coming forward, which is what we'd like really." ‌ Christine even revealed that she would tell Karen "we need to prepare for the worst" but the mum had a different attitude. The liaison officer said: "I don't think Karen had any grasp at all of the possible dangers for her child. She just doesn't seem aware of it. She didn't seem willing to accept the possibility." Shannon was eventually found on March 14, 2008, in the base of a bed at Donovan's house, and the child had been drugged with sedatives. Donovan, who died from cancer last year, was immediately arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison. Karen was also sentenced to eight years behind bars for kidnapping, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice. Shannon was granted a new identity following her horror ordeal and was placed in the care of emergency social services.
