‘The Simpsons' producer breaks silence on Marge Simpson's shocking death after fan backlash
'The Simpsons' executive producer Matt Selman has spoken out about the surprising decision to 'kill off' Marge Simpson during a flashforward scene in the show's Season 36 finale.
Although the move caused major controversy within the hit cartoon's loyal fanbase, Selman slammed the backlash and claimed that it was 'ridiculous', The NY Post reports.
'Obviously, since 'The Simpsons' future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they're all different every time,' he told Variety during an interview published on Thursday, June 26.
'Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago,' Selman, 53, added. ''The Simpsons' doesn't even have canon!'
The episode in question, titled 'Estranger Things' and which aired on May 18, focuses on siblings Bart and Lisa Simpson as they slowly grow apart after they stop watching 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show' together.
Lisa and Bart found a letter from their mother, who it's confirmed has passed.
After a 35-year time jump, the audience learns that Marge has died, Bart and Lisa are estranged, and Homer Simpson, the family's dad, is living in a retirement home.
A short scene from Marge's funeral shows Homer in tears while the rest of the Simpsons family stands around him.
At the end of the Season 36 finale, Marge watches from Heaven as Bart and Lisa save their dad from the retirement home and reconnect over a reboot of 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show.'
'I'm so happy my kids are close again,' the Simpsons family matriarch says.

It is then revealed that Marge met and married Beatles superstar Ringo Starr while in Heaven.
But viewers were not happy to learn that the show's creators 'killed off' Marge Simpson, and many took to social media to express their shock and outrage.
'I haven't even watched The Simpsons in 10+ years but they really killed MARGE?!' one person wrote on X after the episode aired.
'What's this I'm hearing they killed Marge Simpson off?' another fan added.
'Marge Simpson is dead?' a third critic commented. 'Utter woke nonsense!'
Surprisingly, Selman welcomed the backlash and claimed that it was further proof that 'The Simpsons' and its beloved characters are still relevant after 36 years on TV.
'I guess this speaks to the fact that people care about Marge,' he told Variety. 'At the end of the day, it's probably good for business even when these ridiculous, misleading stories go viral!'
'The Simpsons,' which premiered on Fox in 1989, remains the longest-running animated show on television.
Fox renewed the show, which has won 37 Emmys, for four more seasons in April.

It's completely false, completely untrue. It is, it just is. I've got a divorce decree. I've got something that's signed by the judge — it's like, 67 pages — it says the number breakdown,' Cutler added. Though the supplement business owner would not disclose the exact numbers of their settlement, he told viewers that it was 'definitely not zero.' When asked by his podcast co-host, Sam Mackey, if the money Cavallari, 38, received was 'enough to live comfortably for the rest of your life on,' Cutler replied, 'Without an absolute doubt.' Cutler explained that he 'hates' that he even had to address his ex-wife, but it 'gets to a point where it's untrue.' Austin Butler has showed off his buff transformation on the cover of Men's Health. The US actor, 34, told the magazine about his string of worrying health concerns after dedicating three years to embodying Elvis Presley for Baz Luhrmann's 2022 epic, including a hospitalisation for appendicitis-like pain and a moment of temporary blindness while on-board a plane in which he 'genuinely thought I was dying.' Butler, who won a Golden Globe for the dazzling film, said he embarked on a health journey in the aftermath to better care for his mind and body, upping his training schedule, cramming more calories into his diet and focusing on his mental wellbeing. During Elvis ' awards season, Butler weighed just 68kg when he began meeting with Darren Aronofsky, who produces and directs the actor's upcoming film, Caught Stealing. He said he learned handy tools from The Bikeriders co-star Tom Hardy, the latter of whom managed to sleep soundly at night by going home from set, putting on a weighted vest and doing 1,000 box jumps. Jillian Michaels slams new Biggest Loser docu-series: ‘Some folks still lie like it's 1985'
Former Biggest Loser celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels took to social media to break her silence on the Netflix docu-series, Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser. In an Instagram post, Michaels, 51, blasted claims made in Fit For TV, and posted several photos of emails and texts that she claimed backed up her allegations. 'Dr Huizenga did approve caffeine pills on many seasons of Biggest Loser,' Michaels posted, referring to the show's medical advisor, Dr. Robert 'H' Huizenga. She was referring to how the docu-series covers her controversial choice to give caffeine supplements to her contestants. In Fit For TV, series physician Dr. Huizenga alleged that caffeine was banned. He also said that Michaels 'never really showed any interest in my advice.' In her Instagram post, Michaels claimed, '[fellow trainer] Bob Harper not only knew about the caffeine pills the 'stackers fat burner' were actually his suggestion. I wanted to use my brand instead because they were cleaner and had no more than 200mg of caffeine (equivalent to a strong cup of coffee).' The celebrity trainer alleged that caffeine was 'NEVER banned' on The Biggest Loser. The Post reached out to Harper, Michaels, and Netflix for comment. The Biggest Loser ran for 17 seasons on NBC from 2004 to 2016, before moving to USA Network in 2020 for a short-lived run. The show featured overweight contestants competing for a cash prize of $US250,000 if they lost the highest percentage of weight compared to their starting weight. In the years since the show ended, many former contestants have blasted the series. In 2015, former contestant Kai Hibbard told The Post, 'The whole f***ing show is a fat-shaming disaster that I'm embarrassed to have participated in.' She recalled an incident when contestants were put in stalls like horses and made to run around a track. 'I walked. They edited it to look like I was lazy, but I wasn't participating because it was humiliating.' Hibbard said it gave her health problems that stuck with her. 'My thyroid, which I never had problems with, is now crap,' adding, she felt 'brainwashed to believe that you're super-lucky to be [on the show].' In a 2024 interview with People, inaugural winner Ryan Benson alleged that producers would organise unhealthy food platters to 'catch' and embarrass the cast on camera. Sabrina the Teenage Witch star Caroline Rhea was the original host before Days of Our Lives actress Alison Sweeney took over. Harper, 60, and Michaels worked together as trainers on The Biggest Loser for 12 seasons between 2004 and 2013. Michaels left the show after Season 15 aired in 2014, while Harper stayed as a trainer and then became the host for the last two seasons. In Fit for TV, Harper also claimed that Michaels never reached out to him following his 2017 heart attack. 'After I had my heart attack, she's the one person I never heard from. That, to me, spoke volumes,' he said in the doc. In her Instagram post, Michaels also slammed that allegation, adding, 'Wild how some folks still lie like it's 1985 before texts and email were a thing.' Referring to the photos she posted, she explained, 'And, the last image is my second to last text ever to Bob Harper. Take from it what you will.' Her alleged text message to Harper read, 'I really think it's sh**ty of you to not even respond to my texts. It's this kind of thing that always makes me so disappointed [in] our relationship.' In an interview with TMZ, published Tuesday, Michaels said she was meeting with lawyer Bryan Freedman to plot her next move, implying that she's considering legal action against Netflix, Harper, and Dr. Huizenga. Freedman is best known for representing Justin Baldoni in his ongoing legal battle with Blake Lively.
