Novalo Learning Sector upgrades Boitumelong Secondary School library

The Citizen4 days ago
In honour of Mandela Day, the Novalo Learning Sector visited Boitumelong Secondary School in Moriting, Thembisa, on July 18.
They cleaned the school's library and donated a collection of books to help the learners improve their reading skills and vocabulary.
The Novalo Learning Sector is an accredited skills development provider that equips young people with essential soft skills for life and the workplace.
Their initiatives focus on empowering learners across various sectors through reading programmes, job seeker support and life-readiness training, with the core belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.

General manager Thulisile Mgidi said the initiative is part of their broader mission, 'For Mandela Day, we hoped to commemorate it through the Novalo Foundation Learning Centre.
'The core focus of the foundation is to break poverty through education, which is why we chose to support a school library,' Mgidi said.
The books were donated as part of a book drive the organisation hosted in early July.
'Through research, we identified this school's library and began planning how to assist. We approached the principal, followed the necessary protocols, and were granted permission to clean and donate books. Many of the books we've donated today were given to us by Unisa,' she said.

Despite the meaningful outcome, the day came with a few physical challenges.
'We underestimated how many tables and chairs we would have to move to clean the space.
'The library was very dusty, and our surgical masks weren't enough. Fortunately, the principal stepped in with industrial masks. Putting everything back will also be a task,' Mgidi added.
The Novalo team also repaired damaged bookshelves, arriving with tools and materials to ensure the space was fully restored for learners to use.

Dakota Beach crèche battles crime and decay

LINDOKUHLE Daycare Centre at the Dakota Beach informal settlement is facing immense hardships that include break-ins, deteriorating infrastructure, and fires that constantly raze the neighbouring buildings. Also read: Fire destroys shacks at Dakota Beach informal settlement One of the centre's teachers, Mollie Govender, showed the SUN what remains of it after thieves helped themselves to air-conditioner units. Rust has also eaten away at the shipping containers, which are used as learning areas. 'It's unsafe for us and the children. The roof caved in at the classroom, and whenever it rains, water drenches everything, including the food we cook for the children,' said Govender. Lindokuhle Daycare Centre was built using donated materials, but the donations have dried up. One of the few people who has continuously donated is Amanzimtoti resident, Dennii Dorning, who has often shared whatever she could with the centre. Her most recent acts of kindness were on Mandela Day when she bought each of the 35 children a tracksuit outfit, socks, and snacks. 'This daycare centre is close to my heart, and I care deeply about these precious babies and their teachers. We are looking for more people to donate and help make their lives a bit easier. Any form of donation would be appreciated,' said Dorning. For more information on how to donate, contact Govender on 074 959 3666, or Dorning on 082 443 3791. Mandela Day: more than a moment, it's a movement

Mandela Day holds deep meaning for many South Africans — a time to reflect, give back, and honour the legacy of service that Nelson Mandela inspired. For Sappi Southern Africa, it's more than a symbolic gesture; it's a catalyst for ongoing community care and a reminder that meaningful action should extend beyond a single day. On the KZN North Coast, Sappi teams turned intention into action. At Stanger, Sappi's mill partnered with the Stanger & District Association for the Aged (SADAFTA) to deliver blankets and flask hampers to elderly residents to stave off the cold weather. Typek paper was also donated to support SADAFTA's operations. In Mandeni, Sappi Tugela Mill, together with the Tugela Mill Integrated Community Forum (ICF) CSI Subcommittee — led by convener Sbongiseni Thwala — is planning jungle gym upgrades, revitalised gardens, new learning materials, and a hearty lunch for 71 young learners at the Isinethemba Day Care Centre. Further north, Sappi Forests staff supported early childhood development by installing and painting jungle gyms at Phumelela and Nqolobane crèches and donating toys and educational supplies. At KwaMbonambi Secondary, a school garden project launched in partnership with Ithuba Agribusiness is promoting food security and environmental awareness. Through platforms like the ICF, Sappi continues to co-create programmes rooted in local priorities — ensuring Mandela Day becomes a movement, not just a moment. 📬 Subscribe to our community newsletter, Umphakathi, to follow these stories and stay connected to the initiatives shaping our region. Peace programme inspires NOFTA's elderly to find calm

NOFTA is helping its elderly residents discover personal peace through the Peace Education Programme launched last month. 84 guests attended the session, where it was said that the concept will, hopefully, cause a ripple effect of positivity on global harmony. The team, comprising Pravin Vadher, Umesh Jivan, Vinay Vadher, and Nirana Jivan, was joined remotely by Dr Kay Maharaj (Durban) and Mukesh Parbhoo (Johannesburg). The presentation included video excerpts from internationally acclaimed author and speaker, Prem Rawat, whose powerful insights resonated strongly with NOFTA members. Following the positive reception of the introductory session, NOFTA has invited the Peace Education team to roll out the full programme for its members. Participants have already expressed enthusiasm about continuing the journey toward inner peace. Each participant will receive a certificate upon completion of the programme. About the Peace Education Programme The Peace Education Programme is a video-based workshop series designed to help individuals discover their inner strength and personal peace. It encourages reflection on themes such as choice, hope, and dignity. Rather than defining personal peace, the programme empowers participants to develop their own understanding. It has been implemented successfully in community centres, schools, universities, healthcare facilities, senior centres, homeless shelters, rehabilitation clinics, and correctional institutions. The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) makes the programme materials freely available to volunteers and organisations, offering access in over 84 countries and 40 languages.
