In honour of Mandela Day, the Novalo Learning Sector visited Boitumelong Secondary School in Moriting, Thembisa, on July 18. The Novalo Learning Sector is an accredited skills development provider that equips young people with essential soft skills for life and the workplace. 'The core focus of the foundation is to break poverty through education, which is why we chose to support a school library,' Mgidi said. The books were donated as part of a book drive the organisation hosted in early July. 'Through research, we identified this school's library and began planning how to assist. We approached the principal, followed the necessary protocols, and were granted permission to clean and donate books. Many of the books we've donated today were given to us by Unisa,' she said. 'We underestimated how many tables and chairs we would have to move to clean the space. 'The library was very dusty, and our surgical masks weren't enough. Fortunately, the principal stepped in with industrial masks. Putting everything back will also be a task,' Mgidi added. The Novalo team also repaired damaged bookshelves, arriving with tools and materials to ensure the space was fully restored for learners to use.

SAPS urged to 'step up' mental health checks after cop-on-cop shooting
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to strengthen its mental health and wellness support programmes for officers, following a tragic incident involving one of its own. A female police constable, Ntombethemba Mgidi, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court on Monday, after being arrested in connection with the fatal shootings of two fellow officers in the Mbayimbayi area near Murchison on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast last week. Both victims later died from their injuries at Murchison Hospital. Authorities believe the attack stemmed from a domestic dispute, with one of the victims reported to be the father of Mgidi's child. POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo described the incident as 'heartbreaking' and emphasised the psychological pressures faced by SAPS members. 'This act of violence highlights the urgent need for SAPS to intensify internal wellness and psychological support programmes that help members manage relational and emotional pressures,' said Mamabolo. He stressed that the high-stress, high-risk nature of policing requires consistent emotional and mental health support, not just reactive measures after crises.
