Celtics Summer League standout leaves team after 3 games

Yahoo3 days ago
LAS VEGAS — Celtics Summer League standout Charles Bassey is no longer with the team, the Celtics shared ahead of Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers. He was always slated to play just three games, the team said, and had prior obligations the rest of the way.
Bassey was one of the team's most consistent performers through three games. He opened up Summer League with a 14-point, 11-rebound performance in a Celtics' win over the Memphis Grizzlies, and followed that up with a 22-point, 13-rebound, 3-block performance over the New York Knicks.
In Bassey's final game with the Celtics, he recorded 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Bassey wasn't initially listed on the Celtics' Summer League roster, but was a last-minute addition. Summer league head coach Matt Reynolds said that Bassey missed the live portion of the first day of practice, but joined the team shorty after.
After his debut, when asked what drew him to the opportunity, Bassey cited a reason several Summer League players have pointed to this summer: 'The culture.'
Bassey's departure provides Amari Williams with more opportunity
Bassey, who was on a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs last season, seemed like he could be a good fit to bolster the Celtics' frontcourt.
But his departure opens up additional opportunity for Amari Williams, whom the Celtics selected with the 46th overall pick. Williams has appeared in two games so far during Summer League, playing 22 minutes in his debut and 16 minutes in the Celtics' second game.
Additionally, forward/center Kenny Lofton — who recently won MVP of the Chinese Basketball Association — could see increased minutes in Bassey's absence.

Sources: Jrue Holiday 'is a name to monitor' for the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers took another step forward toward possibly fielding a championship-caliber team this coming season by snagging veteran guard Marcus Smart on Saturday. Smart, who won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022, agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Washington Wizards and quickly agreed to join the Lakers on a two-year, $11 million deal that he can officially sign once he clears waivers. But one cannot safely assume the Lakers are done making moves this summer. They could still use a true 3-and-D guard or wing, and as great a defender Smart has been, he's not a 3-and-D player, as he's always been an anemic 3-point shooter. Per Grant Afseth of the Portland Trail Blazers' Jrue Holiday, another veteran guard known for his defense, "is a name to monitor" as far as L.A. is concerned. "Multiple sources recently told that Holiday is a name to monitor, particularly as a potential target for the Los Angeles Lakers," Afseth wrote. "That's not to say active conversations are taking place, but his name continues to surface in NBA circles as the team evaluates options to add more talent around LeBron James and Luka Doncic. Other teams are monitoring the situation, though the Lakers are widely viewed as one of the most natural fits if Portland explores a deal." Holiday has been named to one of the NBA's All-Defensive teams six times in 16 seasons, and he's an absolute menace as far as locking up opponents on the perimeter. Unlike Smart, he's a dependable 3-point shooter — he has a career mark of 37% from that distance, as well as career averages of 15.8 points and 6.2 assists a game, and he has won two championships with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics. But landing him would be difficult for Los Angeles. He will make $32.4 million this coming season, which would make him expensive, and he has three years left on his contract, which includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. Holiday recently turned 35 years of age, so one has to question whether it would be wise for L.A. to take on that type of contract for a player who could bring diminishing returns. Holiday happens to originally be from the San Fernando Valley, and he played his lone season of college basketball at the University of California, Los Angeles. The Celtics traded him to Portland earlier this month as they look to trim salary.

Report: Celtics Showing Interest in Former No 1 Overall Pick

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Celtics have suffered through a tough offseason. After winning a championship just two years ago, the Celtics were hoping to repeat as champions. Unfortunately, that dream ended when Jayson Tatum went down with a torn Achilles in the second round of the NBA Playoffs against the rival New York Knicks. Heading into the offseason, everyone knew that change was coming to Boston due to its luxury tax situation and new ownership. Brad Stevens made that change happen. Kristaps Porzingis was then traded to the Atlanta Hawks, with Georges Niang coming back to the Celtics. That gives the Celtics somewhat of a gap year between contending for a championship. Jaylen Brown could take over and lead the team on a run, but that is far from a guarantee. Who could Boston target as an outside addition to help them compete? How about a former No. 1 overall pick? According to a report from veteran NBA insider Marc Stein, the Celtics are among the teams interested in signing Ben Simmons. "League sources say that the Suns have also had some recent dialogue with former All-Star Ben Simmons, who I'm told has drawn interest since free agency began from Boston, New York and Sacramento," Stein wrote. Simmons would be an interesting addition for Boston. He has never lived up to the hype that surrounded him when he was the No. 1 pick, but he could be a quality role player for the Celtics moving forward. On a two-year deal, he could also be a nice addition for when Tatum gets back on the floor. Read more: Pacers' TJ McConnell Sounds Off About Kyrie Irving During the 2024-25 NBA season split between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, Simmons played in 51 games and made 24 starts. He averaged five points per game to go along with 5.6 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 0.7 steals, while shooting 52 percent from the floor. At 29 years old, Simmons may not bring much offensively. However, he can create for teammates, rebound well, and defend. All of those traits could give Boston a needed presence. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the offseason has in store for the Celtics. Keep an eye on Simmons as a potential pickup. 7 Baltimore Ravens on the roster bubble entering training camp

With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Ravens who are squarely on the roster bubble. The Ravens have a dominant roster, with ten players landing in the top ten rankings from ESPN's positional poll. Baltimore has few holes on the roster, and even less opportunity for an under-the-radar or veteran player to steal a job or cause a surprise cut. In five days, the entire team will return to the Under Armour Performance Center motivated after an offseason of slights and trash talk from looming opponents. With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Ravens who are squarely on the roster bubble. QB --Devin Leary Baltimore didn't select a quarterback in the NFL draft and signed no signal callers in the undrafted free agent class. The Ravens have an MVP as QB1 and a solid backup in Cooper Rush. Baltimore did select a quarterback in last year's NFL Draft, Devin Leary, out of Kentucky in the sixth round, but it didn't work out too well. Leary was cut in the preseason and then signed to the practice squad. If the Ravens carry two quarterbacks on the roster, Leary could be released and signed to the practice squad again. RB Rasheen Ali Baltimore didn't draft a running back and only has four players on the roster at the position. Henry is an All-Pro, Justice Hill is a solid No. 2 running back, and Keaton Mitchell provides a home run threat. Ali needs a strong training camp to warrant the Ravens carrying three running backs. WR Malik Cunningham Baltimore has ten wide receivers on the roster after selecting Colorado's LaJohntay Wester in Round 6. Cunningham is the only player in the position who is not a natural wide receiver but offers special-teams abilities. Cunningham needs an intense training camp to warrant a roster spot over Dayton Wade, Anthony Miller, and Keith Kirkwood. TE Zaire Mitchell-Paden Baltimore has a big three at the tight end position, and two of the top players in the league. Charlie Kolar is the clear No. 3, making things difficult for Mitchell-Paden. DT-C.J. Okoye Okoye, a Nigerian native, first joined the Chargers as part of the International Player Pathway Program. He had a sack in his first organized football game in the preseason. He'll compete in a position group that includes Nnamdi Madubuike, Travis Jones, John Jenkins, and Jayson Jones. OLB David Ojabo A former second-round pick entering the final year of his rookie deal, Ojabo will battle Adisa Isaac, Tavius Robinson, and rookie Mike Green for snaps. Things can only go up for Ojabo after he played in 13 games last season. He has four sacks in his first three seasons, and it's now or never for the former Michigan pass rusher. OL Ben Cleveland Cleveland saw action in all 17 regular-season games as a backup at left guard, plus both playoff contests. The 2021 third-round pick finished the final year of his rookie deal and had no major suitors on the open market. Baltimore added three players to the NFL draft and has solid depth in key positions. Cleveland could be the odd man out if Emery Jones, Carson Vinson, or Garrett Dellinger established themselves at the offensive guard position.
