The Wanted's Jay McGuiness remembers Tom Parker as ‘massive life force'
Singer and actor Jay McGuiness has remembered his The Wanted bandmate Tom Parker as a 'massive life force' who was 'hilarious'.
Parker died in 2022 at the age of 33, 17 months after announcing his diagnosis with an inoperable brain tumour.
McGuiness, who won Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, is among seven well-known personalities featured in BBC Two's Pilgrimage: The Road Through The Alps, which sees celebrities of differing faiths and beliefs walk together through the Austrian and Swiss Alps.
The 34-year-old reflects on Parker's death in the reality programme and told ITV's Good Morning Britain that grieving publicly can come with feelings of 'shame'.
'Especially with grief, there's often quite a lot of shame grieving publicly, and it's easy to feel like 'I don't want to cry' and all that sort of thing, and 'I hate the idea of crying'', he said.
'I also am considering Tom's family and friends, wife and kids, every time I'm talking about him, whether I'm asked about him or not, that's a reminder about something that could be painful, that could be on the wrong day for them to hear about.
'I want people to remember that, man, he was a massive life force. He was hilarious.'
He added: 'I want people to remember the good as well as just remember how things ended.'
Speaking about Pilgrimage: The Road Through The Alps, McGuiness said he was 'never convinced that anyone knows' where people go after they die and added: 'I think maybe we don't find out until you're gone.'
Parker disclosed in October 2020 that he had been diagnosed with stage four glioblastoma and had begun radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
He married his wife Kelsey in 2018, and the couple had two children, Aurelia and Bodhi.
The Wanted formed in 2009, comprised of Parker and McGuiness, Max George, Siva Kaneswaran and Nathan Sykes, and had two UK number one singles and four UK top 10 albums, with best-known songs including All Time Low and Glad You Came.
McGuiness is currently playing William Shakespeare in the UK and Ireland tour of musical & Juliet.

My passion and determination partly comes from my experience in Devon in 2001, during the foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak. That year taught me a lot - especially relevant to recent years with flu outbreaks and government responses to major health issues." Noel and his wife Liz made the move in 2019, and it was as instinctive as it was life-changing. 'Our first holiday was to New Zealand, and it was a fantastic trip,' he remembers. 'We stayed in a couple of luxury lodges, but also in B&Bs and farm stays. We began to understand the Kiwi way of life. We returned to the UK thinking this could be our future.' Looking back, he says, 'It was a punishing schedule but a fabulous period of my life. Without Deal, I wouldn't have met Liz.' Noel and Liz have also launched a hospitality business with a vineyard, pub, restaurant and a supermarket. But for his new show, the focus shifts towards something even more ambitious. The couple want to create New Zealand's first energy garden – a pioneering project that blends biodiversity, community and sustainability into one regenerative living space. In the series, Noel will tackle hands-on challenges, meet inspirational locals and try to navigate day-to-day life in some seriously wild weather. 'The weather here has an attitude,' Noel says. 'Oh, and earthquakes. We've had three.' But he's made friends for life. 'We've been lucky. We've met some incredible people and they've welcomed us. They're glad we came. We're grateful to be here.'

Emmerdale spoilers for next week have confirmed new twists ahead on the ITV soap, as Robert Sugden is back again leading to drama with John, while there's also a disappearance Viewers can expect a lot of trouble ahead on Emmerdale, as well as sad discoveries and big news. There's Robert Sugden's full-time return to the village next week, leading to drama with love rival and brother John Sugden. There's also some "emotional" prison scenes prior to his comeback, and it's also set to get very tense. Elsewhere a character suffers an angry outburst before going missing, leaving his loved ones concerned amid a new mystery plot. A character's cancer diagnosis is exposed to a family member, paving the way for upsetting scenes. There's villagers at war aplenty too, in what will no doubt be a dramatic week of episode. Kicking things off, Ryan Hawley's character heads back to the village for good next week, and it could lead to drama. Aaron Dingle will have a big decision to make as he visits his ex in prison, weeks on from marrying Robert's brother John. There's emotional moments as the pair open up to one another, just as there's concern for Robert as he's left in a state in prison. As the pair reunite, amid Robron fans hoping they will give their romance another go after six years apart, Robert wastes no time in sharing how much he loves Aaron. He speaks for the viewers too as he tells Aaron that mysterious John is not the man for him. Aaron is in turmoil over the chat, but remains adamant he made the right decision by marrying John. It's not long before controlling John finds out where his husband has been though and he heads to the prison himself. Soon tense scenes see feuds boiling over as Robert exposes his recent kiss with Aaron. With that, a rivalry explodes with John prepared to get answers but also issuing his sibling with a sinister warning, making it clear he doesn't know what he's capable of. But killer John may have met his match as Robert knows he's hiding something and is determined to find out what it is. Robert vows to return to the village, and soon he shows up leaving Aaron and John furious - but where will this lead? Also next week the beginning of Bear's mystery plot kicks off with him set to return "a different person" according to bosses. Bear vanishes next week after an outburst, with it revealed he could be gone for weeks if not months. As Bear leaves his motorbike parts strewn across the place, issues at home with his son Paddy and Paddy's wife Mandy continue to heat up. As Cain agrees to let him fix his motorbike there he feigns joy, but when alone he erupts into a fury at the bike with it clear something isn't right. Bear snaps and even threatens Kammy, leaving Paddy concerned and in despair. He's dumbfounded though, as is Mandy, when Bear returns later on as if nothing has happened. Soon, Bear becomes irritated by their questioning and heads away upstairs, leaving Paddy and Mandy to fear things are getting worse. But just as they agree to confront Bear, they are stunned to find him and his bike are gone. Also next week, Charity Dingle finds out her granddaughter Sarah Sugden as the early stages of cervical cancer. Sarah has been keeping the news from her family amid her plan to continue with IVF. There's drama between sisters Vanessa Woodfield and Tracy Robinson too, while Kammy is left frustrates as pal Vinny Dingle gives him the cold shoulder. A final spoiler takes us back to Robert, as it's hinted he's facing trauma from his time in prison that threatens to land him in trouble.
