Straw picks a fine time to shine for Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder was in the mix to lose his roster spot with the return of George Springer before the Blue Jays throttled the Texas Rangers 14-2 on Saturday.
But with Springer back after missing 15 games with a concussion, the Blue Jays instead optioned 26-year-old Joey Loperfido to triple-A Buffalo. The 30-year-old Straw would have had to clear waivers.
With a new skinny bat compared to the thicker torpedo bat he had been employing, Straw pounded a three-run homer in the second inning and followed with a two-run blast in the same left-field area in the third for his first multihomer outing and a career-high five RBIs.
'This team is great,' Straw said. 'The roster is great. Joey's been doing phenomenal. I don't think he could have been doing any better.

'I think there's a really good chance he'll probably be back with us as soon as the rosters expand (in September). He's played his butt off, and he's earned every single bit of being here.'
Straw added two singles to lead the Blue Jays' 18-hit attack with a 4-for-5 game. His play overshadowed Springer's return.

The 42,686 fans at Rogers Centre welcomed back Springer with a rousing ovation, leading off the bottom of the first as the Blue Jays' designated hitter.
Springer struck out in his first two at-bats and then legged out an infield hit on a bouncer to third base before being hit by a pitch from position player Rowdy Tellez, who took to the mound for the final two innings.
'Seeing him hauling (his behind) down the line, it's just who he is. He sets the tone for us,' Toronto manager John Schneider said.

There was some rust on Springer's game, despite his rehab start in Buffalo on Friday, his first game since July 28, after a fastball from Baltimore Orioles Kade Strowd concussed him.
The 35-year-old Springer homered in the second of his three at-bats on Friday.
'It was really cool to hear the fans before his first at-bat,' Schneider said. 'It's just a good feeling having him back with his presence, his ability, his personality.'
Schneider also felt good about witnessing Straw's performance.
'I remember in spring training, we had him in Group B with some of the younger guys in camp,' Schneider said. 'He handled that well and just did his thing.
'He's a pretty integral part of the clubhouse. He's kind of tight with everybody. He understands the role that we're asking him to play, and he's playing it really well.'
Schneider called Straw 'a winning baseball player.' He has played on winning teams, such as the Houston Astros and Cleveland Guardians.
The Astros drafted Straw, and he arrived in Toronto from Cleveland in an off-season trade.
'It feels the exact same,' said Straw when asked about the similarities to the Houston championship teams. 'We're winning. That's what they did over there at the time, and that's what we're doing here.

'I feel like we win a lot of baseball games, which we do, and that's how you win a world championship. You win games.'

As Berrios stumbles, Blue Jays face rotation decisions with Bieber healthy
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider (14) in the sixth inning of a baseball game Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, in Denver. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) TORONTO — John Schneider has a plan with his starting rotation now that newcomer Shane Bieber is healthy and ready to make his Toronto Blue Jays debut. But moments after his team was routed by the Texas Rangers 10-4 before 42,549 at Rogers Centre on Sunday, the Blue Jays manager was reticent about when exactly Bieber slots in this week. 'We got some plans in place,' is all Schneider said. The Blue Jays announced Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt — in that order — have been scheduled to pitch Toronto's outings in Pittsburgh against the Pirates on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Blue Jays have Thursday off before beginning a weekend series in Miami against the Marlins. The 30-year-old Bieber had six days off between his three rehab starts with triple-A Buffalo. He made his last start with Buffalo on Saturday, which puts him on schedule to pitch again in Miami on Friday. But even though the Blue Jays' existing starting rotation of Scherzer (41), Bassitt (36), Gausman (34), Jose Berrios (31) and Eric Lauer (30) are 30 or older, they're each competitors and thrive on heavy workloads. Berrios hasn't missed a start in his career. Even though he had won four decisions before his poor outing in the series finale against Texas, he appears ready for a rest. Berrios has gone six innings in only one of his last seven starts. 'I think everyone can,' Schneider said when asked if Berrios could benefit from some extra rest. 'I think whenever you can get guys extra rest, it's always important, especially this time of year. But at the same time, you're trying to win every single game you can.' The Blue Jays (73-52) continue to lead the American League East by five games over the Boston Red Sox with six weeks remaining. Berrios lasted only 4 1/3 innings against the Rangers, allowing six runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and homers to former Blue Jays infielder Marcus Semien and Corey Seager. 'I don't know what's going to happen,' Berrios said when asked if he was OK with a six-man rotation. 'But (Bieber's) healthy and ready. I'll do whatever.' Schneider, however, still has faith in Berrios. 'When I think of him, I think of consistency,' Schneider said. 'There's been some ups and downs for him and a lot of guys. 'We're still winning a lot of games, and he's finding a way to keep us in games, too. He's the same guy every single day. I'm sure he's frustrated today that he couldn't go longer or give up less runs. That's just kind of how he's wired.' SPRINGER DINGER In his second outing since his 15-game absence, George Springer belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning. 'It was a good day for him,' Schneider said. 'He was actually doing a lot when he wasn't cleared to play. He was getting a lot of reps in. 'I think being able to fall back on what he has been doing so well this year has served him well.' Caleb Williams looks sharp in Ben Johnson's offense as Bears rout Bills 38-0 in preseason
CHICAGO (AP) — Caleb Williams took advantage of his first preseason playing time, connecting with Olamide Zaccheaus for a 36-yard touchdown on the opening drive as the Chicago Bears cruised to 38-0 preseason victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. After sitting out a 24-24 tie with Miami last week, Williams came out firing against Buffalo (0-2) in his first chance to operate coach Ben Johnson's offense during a game. The first pick in the 2024 draft completed throws of 18 yards to rookie first-round pick Colston Loveland and 29 yards to tight end Cole Kmet on a game-opening 92-yard march that concluded when Zaccheaus snagged a throw in the middle of the field on third-and-6, hurdled a tackler and went the distance. Williams' play throughout training camp has been spotty but he was sharp from the start. He hit on six of his first seven throws, then left after the second possession. He finished 6 of 10 for 102 yards. Tyson Bagent came on to lead three second-quarter touchdown drives as the Bears (1-0-1) took a 28-0 halftime lead. Bagent finished a 61-yard drive by rifling a 10-yard strike in the corner of the end zone to Tyler Scott. Before halftime, newly acquired Bears running back Brittain Brown finished an 86-yard drive with a 1-yard TD plunge, and Ian Wheeler's 1-yard TD run completed an 84-yard drive. Bills coach Sean McDermott held reigning MVP Josh Allen and all of his other starters out of the game. Buffalo's backups struggled throughout the first half on both sides of the ball. After Wheeler's TD plunge, the Bears had outgained the Bills 343 yards to 22 and owned an 18-1 advantage in first downs. Bagent played until midway through the third quarter and went 13 of 22 for 197 yards, while Wheeler rushed 19 times for 80 yards and Brown 16 times for 73 yards. Former Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky relieved Bills starter Mike White and completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards. White went 4 of 11 for 54 yards. Waiting it out Allen hasn't played in either of Buffalo's preseason games. He has thrown at least three passes in every preseason since he came into the league in 2018. Also held out was running back James Cook, who had been staging a hold-in before getting a contract extension. Cook returned to practice this week. Injuries Bills: DB Jordan Hancock left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury. Bears: Second-year DE Austin Booker injured a knee covering a kick return and did not return. Booker was off to a fast start with 4 1/2 preseason sacks, including 1 1/2 in the first half against the Bills. … Rookie RB Deion Hankins suffered a knee injury on the second possession and did not return. The Bears were already without RBs Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer. … CB Terell Smith suffered a knee injury while making a tackle just before halftime and left the field on a cart. … DE Dominique Robinson left in the second half with an ankle injury. … Rookie WR J.P. Richardson (ankle) left in the fourth quarter. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Up next Bills: Wrap up the preseason by playing at Tampa Bay on Saturday. Bears: Finish the preseason Friday at Kansas City. ___ AP NFL:
