Kalyn Ponga linked with bombshell Knights exit as star fullback fears he's wasting his prime
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the 27-year-old has engaged the services of a New Zealand rugby union agent as he weighs up leaving the Hunter.

Ponga is contracted to the Knights until the end of 2027 on a $1.4 million a season deal.
However, reports suggest the fullback is potentially willing to leave $1.8m on the table by exiting at the end of the season as he feels that he is wasting his prime years at the club.
The fullback has not formally requested a release at this stage, but Knights powerbrokers are understood to be willing to consider a request if it comes through.
If Ponga were to stay, Newcastle has $2.8m of its salary cap going towards two players from next season, with Eels star Dylan Brown set to arrive next year.
If he is to go, Fletcher Sharpe would likely move to fullback, opening the door for the Knights to pursue a new half to partner Brown.
Ponga, born in Australia to Kiwi parents, has previously voiced his desire to one day represent the All Blacks, and rather than head to another NRL team could make the switch to the 15-man code instead.
In an earlier interview with TMZ, the superstar made it known his family desired to see him represent New Zealand and the fullback admitted to being torn about which nation to pledge his allegiance to at the end of last year.
'It's (New Zealand roots) a very important part of my heritage. It's who I am. It's the values and morals embedded in me through my uncles and my Dad,' Ponga said.
'There's been a cloud over my head as to what I'm doing with my allegiance.'
Ponga would have no shortage of suitors if he were to move to another NRL team or rugby.
If he were to move to rugby at the end of this year it would also give him a chance of fulfilling his dream of playing for the All Blacks.
Ponga would have the 2026 season to get up to speed before the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027.
The news around Ponga comes amid another report that suggests Adam O'Brien could be sacked at the end of the season.
O'Brien had a clause triggered in his deal that extended his stay until the end of 2027 after he finished in the top 12 last season.
But even the hefty payout the Knights will have to cough up reportedly is not enough to save his job, with his six-year tenure at the club appearing to be all but over.
SMH reports that unless O'Brien leads the Knights to finals footy in 2025 – which is incredibly unlikely – he will be given his marching orders.
Assistant coach Blake Green would be an obvious replacement.
Queensland assistant Josh Hannay and former Eels coach Brad Arthur are also believed to be leading contenders for the Newcastle top job if O'Brien is given the boot.

West Indies v Australia, 3rd Test, Day 3 scores, news: Green, Cummins, hold the key
Cameron Green and Pat Cummins hold Australia's third Test fortunes in their hands when day three begins on Tuesday. Green (42*) and Cummins (5*) are holding the fort as Australia wobbled to 6-99, a lead of 181 runs, as Alzarri Joseph led the hosts' fightback. Joseph took 3-19 to tear through the Aussie XI, while Shamar Joseph (2-26) and Justin Greaves (1-19) have done the damage as the pink ball again proved almost unplayable under floodlights in the final session.

Newcastle Knights set to part ways with coach Adam O'Brien while superstar Kalyn Ponga eyes exit for rugby union
Newcastle Knights are set to swing the axe on Adam O'Brien following a tumultuous season, while Kalyn Ponga eyes an early exit. The Sydney Morning Herald reported the team's coach of six years, Adam O'Brien, could be paid out of the final two years on his contract, unless his side can reach a near top eight finish. Newcastle powerbrokers have begun making internal plans to part ways with O'Brien at the end of year, despite the 47-year-old triggering a clause for a contract extension after his side finished in the top 12 in 2024. A late season resurgence could be a step to far for Newcastle, as they deal with the injuries of star duo Kalyn Ponga and Fletcher Sharpe. O'Brien has coached Newcastle since 2020 and has a 45 per cent win record. He has coached his side to the top eight four times, but has never won a finals fixture. Assistant and attacking coach Blake Green could be an in-house replacement unless the Knights look elsewhere. Former Parramatta Eels coach Brad Arthur and Queensland Maroons and Cronulla Sharks assistant Josh Hannay are other candidates for the top job. Meanwhile, star fullback Ponga has engaged the services of a New Zealand rugby union agent as he prepares to walk away from Newcastle at the end of this season. The SMH revealed Ponga has opened up his options to explore other ventures, despite having two years left on his Knights contract. 'Sources with knowledge of the situation talking on the condition of anonymity due to the confidential nature of the discussions said Ponga is concerned about wasting the prime years of his career at the struggling Knights and is open to departing at the end of the season,' the masthead reported. The 27-year-old's name has been tied to European rugby union and the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Ponga has previously indicated his desire to try his hand at playing union for the All Blacks. 'I think it's (The All Blacks) the pinnacle. Well, they are. They're the best sporting organisation in the world... so to put that jersey on would be pretty special,' he said in a 2018 TV interview. The star fullback originally had a clause in his Knights contract to pursue a code switch, however, the clause was removed after he agreed to a lucrative extension - tying him to the club until the end of 2027. Newcastle also recently signed Eels five-eighth Dylan Brown for a lucrative 10-year, $13 million deal which will see him play his career with the club from 2026 to 2035. Depending on the decision Ponga makes moving forward, he may not line up beside the superstar New Zealand representative come next season. The Knights currently sit 13th on the NRL ladder, sitting two points clear of last place with eight rounds remaining. The side will face fourth placed Warriors in their Round 20 home fixture on Sunday July 20th.

‘That is a suspension': AFL great calls out ugly Harley Reid act
Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says burgeoning West Coast star Harley Reid should have been suspended for his tripping act last Sunday. Reid was fined $10,000 — down to $6,250 with an early plea — by the Match Review Officer for intentionally tripping Port Adelaide veteran Travis Boak in the third quarter of the Eagles' 26-point loss at Adelaide Oval. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. With the footy in his hands, Boak appeared to have a clean exit from congestion before Reid stuck his leg out in a blatant attempt at stopping his opponent in his tracks. You can watch the incident in the player above. The second-year prodigy has been fined six times this season but not yet suspended after a ban last year cost him his Rising Star eligibility. And while he's totalled at least $15,000 worth of sanctions this year alone, Lyon was resolute that Reid's act was worthy of a ban, and that more fines wouldn't deter him. 'I can't fathom what the purpose is for fining a man for an act that, had he done it on the first occasion, I would've suspended him for, let alone the sixth,' Lyon began on Fox Footy's AFL 360. 'That, Gerard, I'm sorry — and I've defended Harley across the journey — that is a suspension every day of the week. 'And if you condone this in the manner of just giving him a fine, money's not going to be a problem for Harley Reid. 'The past playing cohort that are in the media now will all agree on that — that's the leg-breaker. That's a kick, Gerard. 'I'm not being overdramatic. You know I've been a defender of Harley ... but that's not a fine, Gerard, let alone the sixth time he's been fined this year. 'That is a suspension for Harley Reid every single day, and if you don't suspend that, you leave the door open for lots of terrible incidents. That's failed the game, that. That's a failure.' Respected Fox Footy commentator Gerard Whateley added: 'If we are searching for the dangerous trip, that was every bit of it.' The 20-year-old has played in all 17 West Coast games this season, averaging 18.6 disposals per game but leading the league for clangers. Reid went head-to-head against Port Adelaide star Jason Horne-Francis on numerous occasions on Sunday — headlined by a spicy back-and-forth that included verbal barbs — and Lyon quizzed AFL 360 guest Andrew McQualter on the challenges associated with keeping his highly talented youngster in line. 'It's an ongoing battle,' McQualter told Fox Footy on Monday night. 'We're sort of having it a bit with a few of our other players as well. 'We want our players to be fiercely competitive, but we also want to stay incredibly disciplined and not give away free kicks. 'We have some challenges with the territory game as it is, so we don't want to give opposition any easy ones. 'We're going to keep trying to be fierce but not give away any free kicks.' On how the former No.1 draft pick has handled feedback about his missteps, McQualter added: 'He's certainly responsive to it (constructive feedback), he understands that he wants to win and compete, but he has to get his balance right. '(It's) part of his learning process he's going through, and I've got no doubt he'll continue to improve and get better at it.'
