Terenure College name former All Black Carlos Spencer as new head coach
In what is the most stunning, high profile coaching appointment in the history of the
All-Ireland League
, Carlos Spencer has agreed to become the next head coach of
Terenure College
.
The Irish Times has learned that the legendary 49-year-old former All Blacks outhalf has signed a three-year deal with the 2023 champions and will move over to Dublin in August.
A statement by the club has confirmed the appointment of Spencer, who commented: 'Terenure is a club with a proud history, passionate supporters and a strong sense of community. I feel very lucky and honoured to now be a part of that.'
Terenure also announced that the vastly experienced Paul Barr will be taking on the role of the club's performance director, working closely with the highly regarded and long-standing director of rugby Ian 'Moggy' Morgan.

The statement added: 'Carlos was the outstanding candidate following our recruitment process. We believe this is an ambitious and exciting appointment for our Club, the All-Ireland League and Irish Rugby.
'Carlos will be welcomed warmly into the Terenure Community and everyone involved with our Club is extremely excited to begin working with him, especially the players.
'We are confident that Carlos will bring with him an incredible wealth of knowledge, experience and skill from his professional playing & coaching career and we are looking forward to the journey ahead'
In a nomadic and maverick career as a gifted, creative and running outhalf, Spencer played 44 Tests for the All Blacks and remains in their list of top ten all-time points scorers with 383 points. He also played 10 matches for the New Zealand Maoris, and no team was closer to his heart, as well as 89 games for Auckland and 99 Super Rugby games for the Auckland Bus (620 points).
He also spent four years with Northampton and one with Gloucester before finishing his playing career with the Lions in South Africa.
Spencer has coached in South Africa, the US and the Hurricanes in Wellington, and most recently was an assistant/backs coach with the Auckland Blues women's side.
Two years ago he said: 'When I was playing, I always liked to bring a bit of innovation and 'out-of-the-box' thinking to the table. Now, as a coach, I want to encourage and help grow those same traits in our Blues wahine.'

IRELAND FACE INTO the Uefa Women's Nations League promotion/relegation play-offs after finishing second in Group B2. 'She was low on confidence' - Ward hails Ireland's Player of the Match Murphy
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND WNT manager Carla Ward has hailed the performance of Emily Murphy who was named the Player of the Match after their Nations League victory over Slovenia. Ireland's quest for automatic qualification to League A fell short in Páirc Uí Chaoimh but Murphy's impressive display was one of the many positives for the hosts to take forward to the play-offs in October. Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, and Austria await Ireland in the draw on Friday. Murphy, who scored the late winner against Türkiye last week, was prominent throughout and broke through for chances at goal while winning plenty of possession and breaking through tackles. She also played a part in Saoirse Noonan's goal as she provided the pass for Jessie Stapleton to send in the delivery for Noonan's header. But speaking after Ireland's 1-0 win, Ward said that Murphy was not playing with much confidence when she took over as the new manager back in January. 'She was low on confidence, had not played many minutes. We had an honest conversation with her after the first camp, that she might not be in the second camp, as we needed more from her. She's got better and better.' Similarly, Ireland's goal-scorer Saoirse Noonan had a breakthrough performance this evening. Her goal on 19 minutes proved to be the difference while her all-round display was equally effective before her withdrawal on 62 minutes for Amber Barrett. This was Noonan's first competitive start for Ireland, starring in front of a home crowd along with fellow Cork natives Megan Connolly and Denise O'Sullivan. If we want to play in an exciting way going forward, we have to be better off the ball. 'And that was the start of it tonight. 'There was an attitude and a mentality from the word go. 15 shots on goal which is huge. We've not struggled to create in this group but certainly maybe struggled to be clinical. India edge Ireland to complete series win
India edged a thrilling second encounter with Ireland 2-1 at Pembroke, despite the hosts' best effort to draw level in the closing minutes. After losing the opening match in the series on Monday 4-0, the Irish came out of the blocks quickly. Early periods of possession allowed the hosts to settle into the game and produce chances. India, however, eventually producing a number of circle entries late in the opening quarter, but Ireland defended soundly to keep it scoreless The first penalty corner of the game would go the way of India in the subsequent corner, with Harmanpreet Singh's drag-flick deflected wide by the Irish defensive penalty corner team. Ireland responded, winning a penalty corner of their own which was well saved off Luke Madeley. The resulting long corner saw India steal the ball and break quickly, eventually breaking the deadlock when Lakra Shilanand finished off the smooth counter-attacking move. Ireland's intensity continued into the second half as they looked to find a route back into the game. Sustained pressure and good counter-pressing kept India pegged back deep in their own half for long periods as the Irish looked to break their way into the Indian circle. A rare attack from the visitors gave them an opportunity at goal which they didn't squander, Dulpreet deflecting home on the back post to double their lead. The home side responded almost immediately, however. An attacking move down the left almost straight from tip-off saw an inviting ball into the circle reach Louis Rowe, the Banbridge forward did well to find an inch of space and flick goalwards, squeezing the ball into the side netting It was almost exclusively one-way traffic in the final quarter, with Ireland throwing every remaining ounce of energy at India as they searched for an equaliser. An incisive run from Mark McNellis and clever piece of skill won Ireland a late penalty corner and a golden opportunity to equalise with just seconds remaining. Luke Madeley's effort from the corner looked destined to end up in the back of the net, but the attempt was parried wide thanks to a textbook save from the India keeper. Both sides will now travel to Amstelveen to face the Netherlands in their next stage of the FIH Pro League. Ireland will face the Dutch on 11/12 June at 7pm (Irish time).
