Aphelele Fassi ready to kick for poles if Springboks require it

Aphelele Fassi ready to kick for poles if Springboks require it

The Citizen5 hours ago
Springbok fullback Aphelele Fassi could be called upon to kick for goal against the Wallabies at Ellis Park this weekend.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said earlier this week that he hoped their Rugby Championship game against the Wallabies wouldn't come down to goalkicking to decide a winner, but if it does one of the players who might be tasked with that is fullback Aphelele Fassi.
Manie Libbok has been named at flyhalf for the match, and without Handre Pollard or Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu on the bench, a lot will rest on his shoulders in terms of kicking for poles, despite him having a spotty record for the Boks.
Utility back Damian Willemse is on the bench and will be another goalkicking option, along with Fassi, if Libbok is having an off day.
If he is called up, it will be a blast from the past for the 27-year-old Fassi, who played flyhalf at school for Dale College and was their frontline goalkicker.
Since turning pro, however, he has very rarely needed to call for the kicking tee.
But he recently did for the Sharks, just a few months ago in a United Rugby Championship match against Scarlets, slotting three penalties in helping his side to a tight 12-3 win, and should he be asked to kick on Saturday, he will be ready.
Practising a lot
'I've been practising my kicking a lot, even before I joined the Boks this season. Tony Brown [attack coach] said last week I must bring my tee to training because I'll be practising kicking, and I have been doing that. I'm confident with the way things are going,' said Fassi at a press conference this week.
'So, when coach Rassie told me I'll also be a kicking option, it was just a matter of putting my head down and continuing to put in the work.'
The game is, however, expected to be more of a running affair, which fits right into Fassi's attacking wheelhouse, as well as the two players on either side of him, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe, while the Australians are a pretty attacking side as well.
'It will be a physical game, but potentially also a very exciting one, given the backs they have, and our back three. They'll play an expansive game and they'll run the ball,' said Fassi.
'But we have our plan. We know what we need to do, no matter what they throw at us. We need to play our brand of rugby.'
The Wallabies also surprised by naming James O'Connor's at flyhalf for the match, in his first appearance for them since 2022, but Fassi said it wouldn't change the Springboks' approach.
'It won't change the way we want to play if they select him because we know what we want to do on the field. He's a good player with a strong skill set, and he's played against us before,' said Fassi.
'So for us, it's all about doing things the Springbok way. For them, he brings experience, and he would be good for them with that old head.'

I want to be the best I've ever been in a Springbok jersey

Siya Kolisi emphasises the Springboks' focus on self-improvement and playing to their highest standards as they prepare for a challenging Rugby Championship opener against Australia at Ellis Park. Picture: Michael Sherman/IOL Image: Michael Sherman/IOL Despite the Springboks starting as overwhelming favourites for their Rugby Championship opener against Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday, South Africa skipper Siya Kolisi is more focussed on playing the kind of rugby that won them the title in 2024. The last time Australia beat South Africa at the famed venue in the heart of Johannesburg came 62 years ago. Dating back to June 28, the Springboks have played four matches. The first was a 54-7 win against the Barbarians in Cape Town, before two victories (42-24 in Pretoria & 45-0 in Nelson Mandela Bay) over Italy before the 55-10 drubbing of Georgia in Nelspruit on July 19. Since then, it's been back to training for the Boks while the Wallabies played two of their final three Tests against the British and Irish Lions. Though Australia lost the series 2-1, they did win their final encounter in Sydney on August 2. Video Player is loading. We think about our standards. And we obviously looked at the past four games that we played, and we were supposed to have an extra week of holiday, and we believe that we didn't hit the standards that we wanted to hit,' said Kolisi. 'So, the focus has solely been on us, and we all know as players that we could have been much better in so many ways.' Kolisi Prepares Springboks for a Bruising Battle Against Wallabies One thing that Kolisi did allude to though, is that the Wallabies would have to brace themselves for a typically bruising battle against the Springboks. 'We've played far better than that, and been far more physical than that. 'So, the focus is solely on us and getting to the standards that we know as a team can get to. We focus on them and look at what they've done in the past, and also study their players, seeing what they can bring. 'But the most important thing is for me to go out there and be the best that I've ever been in the Springbok jersey.' @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport

Western Province aims for accuracy against Cheetahs in Currie Cup clash

In the absence of Zain Davids, lock Gary Porter will lead Western Province against the Cheetahs on Saturday in Bloemfontein. Image: BackpagePix Western Province hopes their training session this past week against the Stormers squad will help to improve their accuracy when they face the Cheetahs on Saturday afternoon in Bloemfontein in the Currie Cup. They counted at least five possible scoring chances they did not take against the Griquas last weekend, and it's something they want to rectify as they search for a first victory. WP find themselves at the foot of the Currie Cup log, and a victory over the Free State side could propel them up from the bottom. However, it will be anything but an easy encounter at the Toyota Stadium (2 pm kick-off), although head coach Labeeb Levy believes they are continuously improving. He opted again for a youthful side, bringing in Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton at flanker and fellow U20 champion Gino Cupido at outside centre. According to Levy, he hopes the hit out with the Stormers helped his side in terms of their accuracy as they look to topple the home side. 'We went against the Stormers guys this week, and when you play a talented bunch of players, they force you to focus more, and if you are not, they will punish you,' Levy said about the training against the United Rugby Championship side. 'It wasn't full contact, like mimicking a match situation, but it was good parameters that we set up. We played against them for about 20 to 25 minutes, and there were a lot of positives. They also cut some of our plans down, which forced us to sharpen up. Our team for the Carling Currie Cup clash against the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday. 📢 team announcement — WP RUGBY (@WP_RUGBY) August 15, 2025 'That session was very valuable, and hopefully we can see how it propels us into being just as sharp on Saturday.' Levy says they've put extensive work into their set piece, as they feel teams target them in that area, and they will look to improve more against the Cheetahs. Gary Porter, who steps in as captain in the place of the injured Zain Davids, said they won't read too much into the struggles of the Cheetahs after the Bloemfontein side had to dig deep against the Sharks last weekend. ⚔️ Iron sharpens iron. Great session with the @WP_RUGBY squad. — DHL Stormers (@THESTORMERS) August 12, 2025

Gayton McKenzie gives away FREE Springbok tickets

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer says the organisation has met its crowd and financial targets for Saturday's Rugby Championship opener between the Springboks and Wallabies at Ellis Park, despite the 62 000-seat stadium not being sold out. As of Friday, tickets remained available across several sections of the stadium, with prices ranging from R1 050 to R4 000, according to the official Ticketmaster website. The steep pricing has raised eyebrows, especially when compared with a full DStv subscription, which offers access to the entire Test series – including the second clash in Cape Town next weekend – for roughly the same cost as the cheapest match ticket. In an effort to boost attendance, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, led by Minister Gayton McKenzie, was distributing 2 000 free tickets as recently as Thursday morning. Speaking at Loftus Versfeld during the launch of Vodacom's new telecoms sponsorship deal with SA Rugby, Oberholzer claimed that the match had already met financial projections. 'We've hit our targets in terms of budgeting for the event,' said Oberholzer. 'When we did our forecasts, we worked on an 85% capacity. We're well over that. After the United Rugby Championship, we'll review our programme and how we drove it.' He added that any shortcomings in the campaign would be evaluated and addressed ahead of the 2026 season. 'If we've made any mistakes, we'll rectify them before the season starts next year.' Saturday's fixture continues a recent trend of under-capacity Springbok Test matches, following lukewarm ticket sales for July Tests against Italy in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth, and Georgia in Nelspruit. Despite this, SA Rugby maintains confidence in the Springboks' commercial pull. The team continues to generate strong TV viewership and remains a major drawcard following their 2023 Rugby World Cup victory. The final chance for local fans to watch the Springboks live in South Africa this year will come on 27 September, when they take on Argentina at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban.
