Many hotels fully booked as holidaymakers flock to Penang
GEORGE TOWN: Never underestimate the power of the Musang King, Black Thorn and all their genetic cousins to pull in the crowds.
With the durian season here as well as the school holidays, most hotels were at least 85% full during the weekend, said Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang chapter chairman Tony Goh.
He said that occupancy was strong during the period with some hotels fully booked, while others recorded over 85% full.
'The hotels were packed and did well during the long weekend.
'Hotels by the beach and in the town area were almost full,' Goh added.
As with the yearly tradition, most hotels bundled room rentals with all-you-can-eat durian feasting.
'Penang is renowned for having orchards that produce durians you cannot find in other states.
'Other than the ever-popular Musang King and Black Thorn, there are 'vintage' clones like Hor Lor, Red Prawn, Green Skin and Capri, and rare variants like Tupai King and Lin Feng Jiao (purportedly named after Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan's wife).
Breezy trail: Visitors enjoying their walk at the Esplanade in George Town, Penang.
'Each variant offers a slightly different tang, and for durian lovers, these are complex flavours to be appreciated and deciphered,' said Goh.
Penang tourism committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the 'King of Fruits' was a fail-proof attraction.
He said with the surge in visitors, the funicular train to Penang Hill also saw an increase in ridership: 6,691 on May 30; 8,183 (May 31); 9,396 (June 1); and 9,251 (June 2).
'The ridership totalled 33,521 in the past four days.
'On normal non-peak days, it is around 4,000 a day,' Wong said.
He said the increase in visitors was also attributed to Singapore's school holidays, which had started as well.
Wong urged tourism players, including hawkers, to give out good deals and provide top-level service during the holiday period.
As for Penang's ever-popular murals, Wong urged visitors to avoid scribbling, scratching or defacing them, which had happened in the past.
'The murals are meant to be admired, not vandalised,' he said.
Penang Tourist Guide Association chairman Clement Liang advised tourists to avoid engaging unlicensed tourist guides.
'Many visitors unknowingly hire unlicensed guides and end up being disappointed by the tours organised,' he said.
Liang urged tourists to use only licensed hotels and facilities to avoid scams.

The law graduate from Universiti Teknologi Mara Melaka makes RM200 to RM300 a day selling pre-loved clothes. 'I used to donate my clothes for recycling but after seeing friends selling pre-loved items, I started selling mine as well,' she said. Dayana sells from her car in the outdoor carpark of the business square Bistari De Kota along Jalan Teknologi 3/9 in Kota Damansara. The venue has been the spot for weekly car boot sales since 2013. It got a boost after being chosen to host celebrations marking 19 years since Petaling Jaya gained city status. Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin launched the celebrations, marking the start of 31 activities organised by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) under the theme 'Petaling Jaya Bandar Paling Bahagia'. The activities, including community programmes and competitions, are being held throughout June. Accompanying the Tengku Permaisuri in visiting the booths were Selangor Women's Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis) president Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad and Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon. The Kota Damansara car boot sale is the second such community event being held regularly in Petaling Jaya. Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, accompanied by the Petaling Jaya mayor, visiting the booths set up at the Kota Damansara car boot sale. Another one is held at Kompleks C MBPJ in Section 52. The Kota Damansara sale runs from 7am to 12pm on Sunday while the Section 52 sale is from 6pm to midnight on Saturday. Both events, which are community-run and monitored by MBPJ, offer a total of 647 parking bays for sellers. Mohamad Zahri said several other initiatives were kicked off during the anniversary celebrations launch. These included 'Food With Love', a new care economy programme organised by MBPJ. 'The project will see halal meals prepared at a central kitchen run by a non-governmental organisation (NGO). 'The meals will be distributed to eligible senior citizens and disabled individuals who register under MBPJ's guidelines,' he said. Mohamad Zahri highlighted that MBPJ was the first local council to introduce a senior citizens' guideline − the Senior Citizen Action Plan 2030 − to address the needs of a growing ageing population. He added that MBPJ was also the first local council in Malaysia to have set up a children's council. Mohamad Zahri said the anniversary theme was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Malaysia Madani and the First Selangor Plan. 'MBPJ has offered free training programmes since 2022. 'More than 5,000 business owners have participated in courses covering marketing, AI tools, and banking,' he said. The mayor said MBPJ had also been sending the top 10 participants for overseas educational trips annually. 'Past destinations have included Bandung, Bangkok and Vietnam. China may be the destination for this year,' he said. At the launch, Malaysia Book of Records held a presentation to recognise MBPJ for having played a leading role in setting up the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza. The three-floor recycling centre in Sungai Way Free Trade Industrial Zone was set up in collaboration with seven NGOs and professional bodies. The Eco Recycling Plaza has been officially recognised by Malaysia Book of Records as the country's first excellent-rated centre of environmental sustainability managed by a local authority.

MBI needs RM4.25mil to complete roof project for Gerbang Malam night market

At Ipoh's Gerbang Malam night market, 185m has roofing while funding is needed to complete the project. — RONNIE CHIN/The Star THE second phase of roof construction for Gerbang Malam along Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar is 85% complete, says Ipoh mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah. He said the roof had been designed with adequate height clearance to avoid obstructing nearby commercial units and shoplots. 'The city council is committed to conducting an immediate survey of the night market site, to assess the current situation and ensure the needs of traders and visitors are taken into account in further planning,' he said. It was previously reported that traders at the site had complained that part of the roof had yet to be put up, causing them to lose business during the rainy season. Zamakhshari said the roof design would address this issue. The first phase of the project, which involved building the roof over 185m of the night market area, was completed in April 2023 at a cost of RM2.9mil, with RM2.6mil coming from the Federal Government and an additional RM300,000 from the city council. 'Work on the second phase began on Oct 14 last year,' said Zamakhshari. He noted that another 171m-long stretch was still without a roof, due to funding constraints. He said MBI had submitted a RM4.25mil funding request to the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture for the implementation of Phase 3. 'It includes the construction of additional roofing, the installation of industrial fans and improvements to pedestrian walkways. 'We will continue working to secure additional funds to complete the project for the well-being of traders and the comfort of visitors.' He said MBI was optimistic the request would be approved, adding that 'MBI is committed to overseeing this project comprehensively.' Zamakhshari said MBI was focused on prioritising traders' welfare, enhancing Gerbang Malam's image as a tourist attraction and ensuring that every development project would benefit Ipoh residents. 'MBI deeply appreciates the patience and support of all parties in our efforts to build a more progressive and prosperous city,' he said. Gerbang Malam is one of Ipoh's key tourist attractions where small and medium-sized traders operate daily from 6pm to midnight.

Malaysia faces sharp rise in AI-driven cyber threats, Fortinet warns

54 per cent of organisations experienced a twofold increase in AI-enabled threats while 24 per cent saw a threefold surge in the past year. 02 Jun 2025 03:02pm Malaysia is facing a sharp rise in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven cyber threats, with nearly 50 per cent of organisations reporting incidents involving AI-powered attacks. Photo for illustrative purposes only - Canva KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia is facing a sharp rise in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven cyber threats, with nearly 50 per cent of organisations reporting incidents involving AI-powered attacks, according to a survey commissioned by global cybersecurity firm Fortinet. The survey, conducted by the International Data Corporation (IDC) across 11 Asia-Pacific (APAC) countries, found that in Malaysia, 54 per cent of organisations experienced a twofold increase in AI-enabled threats while 24 per cent saw a threefold surge in the past year. Fortinet Malaysia Country Manager Kevin Wong said cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging AI to develop and launch attacks more quickly and effectively, moving beyond traditional methods of manual coding. "To give a sense of scale, there are up to 36,000 scam attempts occurring every second through automation, with 97 billion exploitation attempts recorded in the first half of last year alone, and AI is amplifying this trend by two to three times. "In Malaysia, the surge in AI-driven threats is evident, with over 100 billion records stolen and traded on the dark web according to IDC," he told a media briefing on Thursday. He noted that credential theft has spiked by more than 500 per cent within a year, with AI-powered phishing attacks becoming increasingly targeted and difficult to detect. "Traditional tools simply can't keep up, as fast-paced, AI-powered threats demand an equally fast and intelligent response, and that's where AI also plays a role on the defensive side," he said. Wong also noted that cyber risk has evolved from being an occasional concern to a constant and ongoing challenge. "With the rise of AI-powered threats, the nature of cyber risk itself has changed from something we respond to after it happens to something we must act on before it occurs. That is why we partnered with IDC to better understand how security leaders across Asia are navigating this evolving threat landscape, the challenges they face, and the critical gaps in organisational readiness," he said. Meanwhile, Fortinet's vice president of marketing and communications for Asia /Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), Rashish Pandey, said cybersecurity investment in Malaysia remains disproportionately low, with an average of only 15 per cent of IT budgets allocated to cybersecurity, representing just over 1 per cent of total revenue. Malaysia is facing a sharp rise in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven cyber threats, with nearly 50 per cent of organisations reporting incidents involving AI-powered attacks. Photo for illustrative purposes only - Canva "The reason cybersecurity investment remains low is that we still struggle to clearly articulate its business impact to executive teams and boards of directors. Too often, the conversation is framed in technical terms, whereas boards are looking for a discussion centred on business risk, impact, and assessment, which is why we are helping our customers reframe cybersecurity as a strategic business issue rather than just a technical one," he said. The survey also found that only 19 per cent of Malaysian organisations are highly confident in their ability to defend against AI-powered attacks, with 27 per cent stating that such threats are outpacing their detection capabilities and 20 per cent admitting they are unable to detect them at all. Ransomware remains the most frequently encountered threat, reported by 64 per cent of Malaysian respondents. Other common risks include software supply chain attacks (54 per cent), insider threats (52 per cent), cloud vulnerabilities (46 per cent), and phishing (40 per cent). The survey, conducted between February and April 2025, involved 550 IT and cybersecurity leaders from across the APAC region to assess organisational readiness in the face of escalating AI-enabled threats. - BERNAMA More Like This
