Many hotels fully booked as holidaymakers flock to Penang
GEORGE TOWN: Never underestimate the power of the Musang King, Black Thorn and all their genetic cousins to pull in the crowds.
With the durian season here as well as the school holidays, most hotels were at least 85% full during the weekend, said Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang chapter chairman Tony Goh.
He said that occupancy was strong during the period with some hotels fully booked, while others recorded over 85% full.
'The hotels were packed and did well during the long weekend.
'Hotels by the beach and in the town area were almost full,' Goh added.
As with the yearly tradition, most hotels bundled room rentals with all-you-can-eat durian feasting.
'Penang is renowned for having orchards that produce durians you cannot find in other states.
'Other than the ever-popular Musang King and Black Thorn, there are 'vintage' clones like Hor Lor, Red Prawn, Green Skin and Capri, and rare variants like Tupai King and Lin Feng Jiao (purportedly named after Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan's wife).
Breezy trail: Visitors enjoying their walk at the Esplanade in George Town, Penang.
'Each variant offers a slightly different tang, and for durian lovers, these are complex flavours to be appreciated and deciphered,' said Goh.
Penang tourism committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the 'King of Fruits' was a fail-proof attraction.
He said with the surge in visitors, the funicular train to Penang Hill also saw an increase in ridership: 6,691 on May 30; 8,183 (May 31); 9,396 (June 1); and 9,251 (June 2).
'The ridership totalled 33,521 in the past four days.
'On normal non-peak days, it is around 4,000 a day,' Wong said.
He said the increase in visitors was also attributed to Singapore's school holidays, which had started as well.
Wong urged tourism players, including hawkers, to give out good deals and provide top-level service during the holiday period.
As for Penang's ever-popular murals, Wong urged visitors to avoid scribbling, scratching or defacing them, which had happened in the past.
'The murals are meant to be admired, not vandalised,' he said.
Penang Tourist Guide Association chairman Clement Liang advised tourists to avoid engaging unlicensed tourist guides.
'Many visitors unknowingly hire unlicensed guides and end up being disappointed by the tours organised,' he said.
Liang urged tourists to use only licensed hotels and facilities to avoid scams.

RTD seizes 270 luxury cars in nationwide crackdown

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Some of the seized cars. - Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department's (RTD) 'Ops Luxury 3.0' has hit the streets hard, seizing 270 high-end rides nationwide over the past two weeks. According to The Star, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Rolls-Royces were among the flashy machines caught being driven without valid road tax or insurance. JPJ director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the sweep snared celebrities, influencers and entrepreneurs, with some owing up to RM29,000 in back taxes. 'The seized cars include Ferrari, Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce, with some of them still driven without road tax for about three years. 'In Johor alone, we detained 11 vehicles, including a car with an annual road tax of RM12,000. 'In Kuala Lumpur, the highest road tax arrears recorded was RM29,000,' he reportedly said at a press conference yesterday, as cited by The Star. Owners can only reclaim their luxury rides once all outstanding road tax, insurance, and summonses are cleared. 'Driving without a valid road tax and insurance puts not only other road users at risk, but also the driver themselves in the event of accidents,' Aedy Fadly warned. He added that the crackdown will soon expand to Sabah and Sarawak, promising more high-octane surprises in the months ahead. - Malay Mail * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Pahang launches Malaysia's first prebiotic rice for better health

TEMERLOH: Pahang has made history as the first Malaysian state to produce prebiotic rice, branded as Beras Pahang. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail highlighted its unique health advantages. 'Beras Pahang has its uniqueness. It is a prebiotic rice, low in sugar, and suitable for those with diabetes.' Currently, the rice is sold in limited quantities, with Pahang residents getting priority access. Grown in Pekan's Ganchong fields, it boasts enhanced taste, fragrance, and softness while aiding digestion. Priced at RM8 per kg, it was launched at Pahang Mini MAHA 2025 in Dataran Temerloh. The event drew over 80,000 visitors, prompting plans to rotate its location annually. Wan Rosdy cited Pahang's RM25.12 billion agriculture sector contribution, second only to Johor. Crops dominated with 88% of sales, led by palm oil (RM14.18 billion) and Cameron Highlands vegetables (RM3.6 billion). Musang King durian earned RM2.42 billion, reinforcing its global appeal. Pahang also leads in fresh milk production, with 9.05 million litres worth RM47.25 million. The state is expanding into premium livestock, including wagyu cattle, to boost high-value agriculture. - Bernama

Skills, services for senior folk to build silver economy

This forward-thinking strategy is the cornerstone of the state's five-year Digital Economy Master Plan (DEMP) 2025-2030. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow unveiled the plan, which provides a clear roadmap for equipping mature workers with accessible and age-friendly digital tools, skills and services. The initiative is particularly timely, as it aligns with a growing national debate over raising the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65. The Federal Government is currently studying this proposal, with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, saying that it was a 'waste' to lose productive workers at 60. Unveiling the master plan at the Penang Digital Economy Summit 2025, Chow explained that the new roadmap was designed to make Penang a digital-first state. This will be a collaborative effort involving state and federal agencies, government-linked companies and industry leaders. Chow also emphasised the need for Penang to diversify its economy in a volatile global landscape, citing the reassertion of 'America First' policies and the use of tariffs as geopolitical tools. The DEMP, he said, was a vital tool to ensure that the state was not overly reliant on any single sector or global power. The plan also aligns with the Penang2030 vision and 13th Malaysia Plan's focus on inclusivity and readiness for an ageing population. The DEMP builds upon the success of the previous Digital Transformation Master Plan (DTMP) 2021-2023, which successfully completed or initiated over 60% of its 21 initiatives. These included the #Dah Digital programme, which boosted digital literacy for 18,500 residents, and Penang Connectivity Master Plan, which improved Internet access across the state. The prior plan also saw the establishment of Digital Penang as a hub for data, innovation and smart governance. The recent summit, a collaborative event organised by Digital Penang and supported by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), attracted some 300 participants from over 50 corporate and public sector organisations. Digital Penang chief executive officer (CEO) Ng Kwang Ming said the event was designed to strengthen Penang's role as a digital economy hub by fostering cross-sector collaboration. Key sessions focused on investment opportunities, start-up growth, education and social impact initiatives aimed at enhancing community services and non-governmental organisation outreach through digital accessibility. The summit, free and open to the public, also featured an exhibition and panel sessions. Present were prominent figures like the chief executive officers of MDEC Anuar Fariz Fadzil, InvestPenang's Datuk Loo Lee Lian and Cradle Fund Group's Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke.
