Sporting are demanding a total of £68.9m (€80m) which is £60.3m up front with £8.6m in add-ons.
Currently, Arsenal have indicated they are prepared to pay £56m up front and £8.6m in add-ons, which is a total of £64.6m.
But it seems certain that eventually, the Londoners will end up paying the £68.9m which Sporting want for a player they signed for just £20m from Coventry two years ago.
Arsenal's players all officially report for training on Tuesday although some stars are expected to arrive early today.

Ideally, Arteta would like Gyokeres at the club before Arsenal head to Singapore for their pre-season tour on July 19.
With Manchester United and Juventus also interested in the forward, it would be a huge coup for Arsenal and a major title boost if they land the 27-year-old.
Gyokeres is desperate to sign for the North London club and has told Sporting he will not report for training on Friday or play for the club again.
He is also angry that they backtracked on a 'gentleman's agreement' that he could leave the club for just £60m.

The Gunners had been weighing up a move for either Gyokeres or RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.
Reports suggest that Arsenal have already agreed personal terms over a five-year deal with Gyokeres, but they are now trying to negotiate a fee with Sporting.

Sporting have given Gyokeres extra time away from pre-season training to complete a deal, telling him he does not have to report for training until Friday.
However, SunSport understand that the forward is insisting he will not appear anyway because he is so angry over the transfer saga.
Martin Zubimendi, 26, has arrived at the Emirates on a five-year-deal – the Gunners' second capture of the summer after spending £5m on Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Gyokeres to face disciplinary action after training absence, says Sporting president

July 13 (Reuters) - Sporting President Frederico Varandas has warned that striker Viktor Gyokeres will be fined and asked to apologise to his squad after failing to turn up for pre-season training on time, amid reports of a move away from the Portuguese club. The 27-year-old Sweden international was due to report for Sporting's training camp in Portugal's southern Algarve region on July 12 after being granted an extended break, according to media reports. Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals last season, has three years left on his Sporting contract and has been linked with a move to Premier League club Arsenal. "We're calm. Everything will be resolved with the closing of the market, a heavy fine, and an apology to the group," Varandas told the Lusa news agency on Saturday. "If they (interested clubs) don't want to pay fair market value for Viktor, we are very comfortable with that for the next three years. "If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to facilitate the exit, they are not only completely wrong but are also making the player's exit even more complicated. "No one is above the club's interests, whoever they may be." Gyokeres has bagged 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting since his 2023 move from English second-tier club Coventry City, winning the Primeira Liga title in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. Sporting play Scottish champions Celtic in a friendly match at the Estadio Algarve on Wednesday.

Arsenal make breakthrough in bid to keep Ethan Nwaneri amid Chelsea interest

Arsenal are confident Ethan Nwaneri will snub interest from Chelsea and sign a new contract at the club, despite some uncertainty over the teenager's future. The 18-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Gunners last time round, making 37 appearances in all competitions and scoring nine goals. As injuries to the likes of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard frustrated Arsenal at times last season, the youngster stepped forward and impressed as he became a regular member of the first team. However, his contract at the Emirates only runs until next summer and he has been linked with a shock exit from the club he joined at just eight years old. Chelsea are interested in the England Under-21 star and the prospect of a controversial move across London looked very real. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal are now confident that Nwaneri will sign a new contract and stay with them after fresh talks with his agent and family this week. The negotiations saw the club selling Mikel Arteta's project and vision to the teenager's camp and making it clear that he can expect game time under the Spaniard. Clearly any contract negotiations will involved finances as well, with the youngster warranting significantly higher wages in his next deal. There have reportedly been 'difficult' moments in the negotiations, with Chelsea ready to pounce and make an offer, but Arsenal are now optimistic that a contract extension will be agreed. One concern for Nwaneri will have been the Arsenal interest in Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, who is expected to complete a £52m move across London in the near future. The arrival of the England international will add more competition for places in Arsenal's forward line, as would the signing of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace and Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting, if those deals are completed as the Gunners want them to be. There is also expected to be at least one exit as well, though, with Leandro Trossard available for sale to make room for the new arrivals. The Gunners are open to letting the 30-year-old leave, with The Times reporting that Fenerbahce have already agreed personal terms with the 30-year-old and will now negotiate a transfer fee with Arsenal. Trossard was signed for £27m from Brighton in January 2023 and has scored 28 goals in 124 appearances for the Gunners, turning out 56 times in all competitions over the last campaign. The Belgian's contract expires next year and Arsenal are hoping to get around £20m for his signature this summer. It is an extremely busy transfer window at the Emirates, with Madueke set to become Arsenal's fourth signing of the summer with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi already joining the club. The pursuit of Gyokeres is proving to be the longest-running saga of the summer so far, with Sporting president Frederico Varandas is demanding €70million (£60.2m) up front plus €10m (£8.64m) in add-ons. The Swedish striker has refused to return to the club before a deal is done, feeling that Sporting have reneged on an agreement to sell him for less than the fee they are now asking for. The club president has responded angrily, slamming Gyokeres and anyone trying to force through the deal while the forward is effectively on strike. Ferdinand blasts Arsenal fans for 'disgraceful' reaction to Madueke transfer

Rio Ferdinand has leapt to the defence of Noni Madueke amid the huge backlash to his potential transfer from Chelsea to Arsenal as some Gunners fans begin a petition against the move Rio Ferdinand has taken aim at those who have taken aim at Noni Madueke as his Arsenal move edges closer - which has not pleased everyone who attends the Emirates. The Chelsea star has fallen down the pecking order with more new signings arriving, potentially decreasing his involvement further. As a result the Blues are open to his exit with their London rivals returning to buy another one of their players. ‌ In recent years Jorginho, Kai Havertz and Kepa Arrizabalaga have all left Stamford Bridge to head to the Emirates and Madueke could follow the same path. It would mean that Arsenal have spent more than £100million on players from Chelsea in three years. ‌ Mikel Arteta's side had been linked with Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams and Rodrygo from Real Madrid, but opting for Madueke has seen some fans air their frustration. So much so that a petition against the transfer was created and signed by thousands. Ferdinand is stunned by the reaction and claims that Arsenal fans should be celebrating their latest capture, not taking aim at an individual as the ex-Manchester United defender admitted he'd "never seen anything like this before". READ MORE: Christian Norgaard snubbed European giant before sealing dream Arsenal transfer He said on his social channels: "For a Young 23 year old English footballer to be vilified, bullied, embarrassed and totally strip down at a time when you're meant to be celebrating a transfer worth £55 million. Yes a young kid with a dream about to secure a £55 million dream move to a club of his desire leaving a rival at that to be treated in this manner via section of the Arsenal fan base is an utter disgrace. ‌ "Just put yourself in his shoes for one minute just put yourself in his parents shoes for one minute and just think of how that feeling must be. I'll say it again, at a time as a player as a human as a family you should be celebrating. I just hope the people that are closest to him are around him and supporting him in the way that he needs right now. "It's fine for fans to disagree with signings or decisions made at their football club but the way some fans have publicly voiced their opinions and those who have gone a step further in publicly joining a petition for this player not to be signed by their football club is beyond me. I have never seen anything like this before, and I hope I don't ever again. Like I said earlier just imagine this was your best friend, one of your family members, your brother, son…then tell me how would you feel if they were on the receiving end of this vulgar behaviour ??? "By the way, This isn't aimed at all Arsenal fans it's just a small section who have become very loud unfortunately. I just hope the transfer goes through and Noni Madueke rams all of this negativity back down the throats of these impostors. Whatever happens from here good luck Noni."
