How many cups of coffee do you drink a day? Science says this exact amount could lower death risk by 14%

Time of India17-06-2025
Having one or two cups of
black coffee
each day could reduce the risk of dying early by 14%, according to a new study quoted by PTI. But adding sugar or milk might reduce these health benefits, researchers have warned.
The study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, was led by Fang Fang Zhang from Tufts University in the US. She explained, 'The health benefits of coffee might be due to its bioactive compounds, but our results suggest that adding sugar and saturated fat may take away these benefits.'
What the study found
The research team studied data from over 46,000 adults aged 20 and above. The data came from nine cycles of the US
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
(NHANES), collected between 1999 and 2018. This information was then linked to national death records.
Participants reported what they ate and drank in a 24-hour period. Based on that, their coffee habits were studied, whether they drank it with or without caffeine, how much sugar and saturated fat they added, and how many cups they consumed.
Black coffee vs coffee with sugar and fat
Bingjie Zhou, first author of the study and a PhD graduate from Tufts, said, 'Few studies have looked at how coffee additives affect the link between coffee and mortality. Our study is one of the first to measure how much sugar and saturated fat people are adding.'
Live Events
The researchers found that people who drank black coffee or coffee with very little sugar and fat had a 14% lower risk of dying from any cause compared to those who didn't drink coffee at all.
Having two to three cups of coffee a day was linked to a 17% lower risk of death. However, drinking more than three cups a day did not show extra benefits. In fact, the link between coffee and reduced death from heart disease became weaker beyond that point.
Key takeaway
While coffee may offer health benefits, the study suggests that these may only apply when it's drunk plain or with minimal additions. Too much sugar or fat could cancel out the good effects.

Kishtwar cloudburst: GMC Jammu performed 25 major surgeries to save critically-injured survivors

The medical care continued the next day as well when more surgeries were performed, he added. 'On the fateful night of August 14, GMC Jammu received 66 critical patients. On the same night, around 25 major surgeries were performed to save precious lives,' the principal of GMC Jammu, Dr Ashutosh Gupta, said. Jammu, Aug 16 (PTI) The Government Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, one of the premier health institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, took the lead in dealing with the medical crisis arising out of the deadly cloudburst in Kishtwar, performing 25 major surgeries on critically-injured persons to save precious lives, officials said. The disaster struck Chishoti — the last motorable village en route the Machail Mata temple — at around 12:30 pm on August 14, leaving 60 persons dead and over 100 injured. So far, 82 people — 81 pilgrims and one from the CISF — are reported missing after the cloudburst-induced flash floods hit the village. 'On the night of August 14, when every Indian was preparing to celebrate the 79th Independence Day, a team of medical professionals at GMC Jammu was waiting to receive a horde of ambulances arriving from Kishtwar, carrying unfortunate victims who suffered not only physical but also mental injuries following a natural disaster of paramount proportions,' Gupta said. As soon as ambulance sirens began sounding in the emergency block, the team swung into action, he said. 'Without losing any time, porters and helpers took the patient trolleys to the triage room, where medical teams immediately started providing treatment. There was no time to lose and split-second decisions were taken,' he said. The critically-ill patients were put on ventilators, and those requiring emergency surgeries were shifted to the operation theatres, Gupta said. The nursing staff also provided excellent care, acting like sisters, mothers, and friends to those who suffered mental and physical trauma, he added. Mumbai, Aug 16 (PTI) The death toll in 'Dahi Handi' festivities in Mumbai on Saturday touched two after a 14-year-old 'govinda' was declared dead on arrival by doctors in a hospital in Ghatkopar, a civic official said. Rohan Mohan Malvi, part of the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak, fell unconscious while sitting in a tempo in Adarsh Nagar area of Andheri East, the official said, adding he did not take part in the pyramid formation since he had recently suffered a bout of jaundice. 'He was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar where doctors declared him dead on arrival," he said. Earlier, in the afternoon, a 32-year-old man fell to death while tying 'Dahi Handi' in Mankhurd in the north eastern part of the metropolis, officials said. The deceased was identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari. 'He was tying the handi (an earthen pot filled with curd which groups of 'govindas' try to reach and break by forming a human pyramid) to a rope from the first-floor window grille of his house in Maharashtra Nagar when he fell. He was taken to civic-run Shatabdi Govandi Hospital where he was declared brought dead," an official said. As on 9pm, the number of persons injured during the festivities stood at 95, the condition of two being serious, the official said. 'Of the 95 govindas, 76 were discharged after the treatment, while 19 are hospitalized. The 95 comprise 30 in the island city, 31 in the eastern suburbs and 34 in the western part of the city," he informed. Dahi Handi festival is celebrated across Maharashtra to mark the birth of Lord Krishna. IIT-Kharagpur sets up centre to train youths as health professionals

Agency: PTI Kolkata, Aug 16 (PTI) The Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur has established a dedicated centre within its campus to train rural and semi-urban youths as health professionals, an official said on Saturday. The 'School for Skills: Healthcare & Technology' aims to foster inclusive growth and skill development in the healthcare sector, he said. The facility will initially accommodate 150 students annually, offering short-term certificate courses aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). The programmes will culminate in certifications issued by the Healthcare Sector Skill Council. The trained workforce will support patient care at the Shyama Prasad Mukerji Super-Speciality Hospital at IIT-Kharagpur as well as other healthcare institutions, he said. Additionally, a section of the trained youths will participate in field trials and validation of healthcare technologies developed at IIT-Kharagpur, enabling systematic health data generation in rural regions of West Bengal and beyond. The inaugural batch will commence classes in November 2025, with plans to expand course offerings in the coming years. The initiative is expected to generate employment in the health sector, empower women, uplift economically weaker sections, and strengthen community resilience, the official said. 'By combining skill development with cutting-edge technology, we aim to build a healthcare workforce that can serve the last mile, transform rural healthcare delivery, and contribute to the nation's vision of inclusive growth," IIT-Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty said.
