Why 'White Lotus' creator Mike White is returning to the next season of 'Survivor'
White, a one-time participant on the show, has since become the famed mastermind behind "White Lotus," the popular resort-based drama on HBO.
"The thing that's most interesting about Mike playing for the second time is there is no hiding that he is the biggest writer, director, show creator in the world right now, and he wanted to come back and play 'Survivor,'" Probst told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Aug. 7. "So I can understand why people had a reaction."
'White Lotus' creator Mike White's next tropical island is return to 'Survivor'
The long-running competition show features a group of "castaways" facing off in challenges on a remote island for the chance to take home $1 million. Among the first crop of reality shows to make it big when the format burst onto the scene in the early 2000s, it requires a mix of physical strength and personal cunning to forge alliances and read other contestants.
While Probst, the show's longtime host, acknowledges the oddity of an Emmy-winning director opting to return to the dusty isles of survivordom, he thinks people aren't asking the right questions.
"I'm surprised people aren't asking, 'Why is one of the greatest writers in the history of Hollywood so interested in 'Survivor?'" he told THR. "What is it that Mike is learning about humans and behavior and situational ethics that he applies to his craft? Because I think that's part of why he does it — he's out there in a real incubator of human behavior where you never know what's going to happen, but what you do know is that if you show up to play 'Survivor', you can study it."
'Survivor' Season 50 cast: Which returning players are playing for $1 million?
White first appeared on the "Survivor's" 37th season in 2018, landing in the runner-up spot and gaining a cult popularity among the show's fanbase along the way. His biggest hit, "White Lotus," which channels the darker side of the human spirit and the downfalls of excess, works in tandem with his experience on the show.
"When you watch 'White Lotus,' what are you watching? You're watching human behavior all day," Probst continued. "I think that's part of the reason Mike is back, and if you don't understand that, maybe you're asking the wrong question."
White, a celebrated screenwriter, also penned and starred in "School of Rock" and "Chuck & Buck."
"He wanted to come back and step away from his Hollywood career for a moment and play this game that he loves to see how it will go," Probst added, explaining that he thinks White is interested to see how his own newfound fame will factor into his standing among fellow contestants.
"He's arguably the single best storyteller we've ever had on 'Survivor,'" he told THR. "I'm grateful to consider him a friend, because I learn from Mike every day. You're talking (about) one of the best of all time, and the fact that he said yes to 'Survivor' still brings a smile on my face.'
When is 'Survivor' Season 50 airing?
No official premiere date has been released, but the show's 50th season is expected to begin airing on CBS in spring 2026.

Dana White says UFC hosting first-ever White House fight on July 4
The Ultimate Fighting Championship will stage a historic fight at the White House on July 4, 2026, marking America's 250th birthday with what would be the first professional mixed martial arts event ever held at the presidential residence, UFC CEO Dana White confirmed Tuesday. "It is definitely going to happen," White told "CBS Mornings." White said he spoke with President Donald Trump Monday night about the event and plans to meet with Mr. Trump and Ivanka Trump at the end of this month to finalize details and review venue renderings. A source familiar with the planning confirmed that the White House expected the event to happen. "When he called me and asked me to do it, he said, 'I want Ivanka in the middle of this,'" White said. "So Ivanka reached out to me, and her and I started talking about the possibilities, where it would be and, you know, I put together all the renderings." The announcement comes as UFC finalizes a groundbreaking seven-year streaming deal with Paramount worth an average of $1.1 billion annually. The agreement represents a significant shift from UFC's traditional pay-per-view model, with select events to be simulcast on CBS. White called the Paramount deal "one of the massive, major milestones in my career and in the history of the sport." White said the media world is changing but believes pay-per-view is still strong. "I don't know if there's a better way," White said. "There are so many disruptors in the world right now. Who would have thought taxi cabs would disappear or cable television would start to go away?" White said that UFC will continue hosting pay-per-view events, including one scheduled for Saturday in Chicago, while embracing streaming platforms for broader reach. "Live sports, you have to watch live. You have to tune in. It is a destination watch," he said. "Sports are a big deal to these streaming services." No fighters have been announced for the White House event, which White said remains nearly a year away. The venue would mark an unprecedented location for a professional mixed martial arts event that regularly fills stadiums and arenas. The Paramount deal places UFC alongside other major sporting events broadcast on CBS, including the Masters Tournament, NCAA Final Four and Super Bowl. Paramount, a Skydance Corporation, is the parent company of CBS News. Dana White says UFC fight on the White House lawn is 'absolutely' happening
A UFC fight at the White House looks primed to take place on the Fourth of July next year. 'It's absolutely going to happen,' UFC CEO and President Dana White told The Associated Press in a story published Aug. 12. White's comments come on the heels of a billion-dollar deal to bring UFC to CBS that was announced on Monday, Aug. 11. The agreement will give CBS and streaming service Paramount+ exclusive rights to broadcast 30 UFC Fight Nights and 13 marquee events each year beginning 2026, which could include the Fourth of July brawl at the White House. 'Think about that, the 250th birthday of the United States of America, the UFC will be on the White House south lawn live on CBS," White told the AP. White is scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C. on Aug. 28 to meet with Trump and his daughter, Ivanka, to discuss plans for the fight, the AP reported. The deal between UFC and CBS was announced just days after the network and Skydance officially closed an $8 billion merger and doubles the annual value of UFC's current U.S. rights deal with ESPN+, according to reporting from Sportico. The deal also signals the end of the existing pay-per-view model currently utilized by the UFC. Trump floated idea of UFC fight at White House this past 4th of July Trump first floated the idea of having a UFC fight on White House grounds on this past Fourth of July. "Every one of our national park battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250," Trump said. "And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight. We're going to have a UFC fight on the grounds of the White House." "Championship fight − full fight," he added. Trump, no stranger to the mixed martial arts scene, has attended multiple events in the past, including UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden after winning the 2024 presidential election. White also introduced Trump on the stage on the final night of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The first UFC fight held under the ownership of White and his partners was held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. Trump "gave us our start when nobody would talk to us," White told Fox News in 2018. Trump's White House staff has ties to the mixed martial arts organization. After his campaign win in November 2024, Trump named Steven Cheung, a former UFC spokesperson, as the White House communications director.
