Daniel Dubois was a Lennox Lewis disciple as a kid - now he could stand alongside him

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Exclusive interview: Daniel Dubois speaks about his video sessions with Lennox Lewis, his dad, Oleksandr Usyk and learning how to play the harp ahead of Wembley clash
Daniel Dubois was sat in front of videos of Lennox Lewis as a child and told he could one day be just like him.

That could certainly be a reality tonight if the latest British heavyweight star causes a big upset by dethroning Oleksandr Usyk as the king of the division tonight at Wembley Stadium. Dubois, 27, has gone some way to emulating the icon name of the sport from these shores by becoming a world champion in the blue-ribband weight.

But no Brit has ever been able to say they're the undisputed champion in the division since Lewis had that crown in 1999. The tale of press ups and bible readings for the Dubois children with dad, Stan, as the leader is well told.

Along with the lung-busting runs which once brought them to the attention of the authorities on more than one occasion who feared they were being forced to train more than being home schooled.
But between all of that were video sessions when Daniel was put in front of the TV and Lewis was one of the subjects on the syllabus of his course work.
'I remember watching the videos,' he said. 'Dad would put them on and tell me to learn. It was Lennox, Frank Bruno, Nigel Benn, guys from that era. After my dad, Lennox was probably who I looked up to the most. Now I can become undisputed champion like him. It's crazy to think my name could be alongside his in history but this has been the plan. Now it is my turn. One day people will watch videos of me and learn.'

Dubois has met Lewis on a number of occasions and received advice. 'He said some good things to say about me,' said the Londoner. 'He is, proper, isn't he? Yeah he's proper relaxed, cool guy. There's not too many like him, he's got a swagger.'
Yet it goes far to explain how much influence Dubois' father has over him when asked whose advice he would take more seriously - his dad's or Lewis'? 'My dad,' he said.

To emulate Lewis, it will take something special tonight. Dubois is 11 years Usyk's junior and he is much improved in mentality and ability since their 2023 clash where, apart from the low blow controversy, it was a one-sided affair which the Ukrainian cruised in before dropping and stopping him in the ninth.
He has the IBF belt which Usyk relinquished and now wants to take the WBO, WBC and WBA ones from him. While accusations of being a 'quitter' shaken off with ballsy performances against Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua.
Usyk is one of the greats of all time as a two-weight undisputed champion. Yet the hope for those in the Dubois business is that father time has caught up with the Ukrainian. There has been little evidence in his two wins over Tyson Fury in his last two outings of that though.

The Brit conqueror is looking to make it a double over Dubois as well, with two wins over Joshua, and single victories against Derek Chisora and Tony Bellew.
'But it is time I showed how Britain can conquer the world and Usyk,' said Dubois last week at his gym in Borehamwood. With Fury and Joshua winding down, Dubois is the current one carrying the weight of the nation in the sport's glamour division.
'My time now,' he added. He has already knocked out Joshua of course and received praise for not celebrating while the former champion lay on the canvas. 'That's what the old guys did,' he said. 'Some of the ones I watched in the videos.'

The video sessions of Lewis and Co have been replaced by music lessons now between training sessions after his dad has driven him home to the house they still share. He's learning to play the harp. 'It's not easy,' he said. 'But I'm getting there slowly with it.'
It has been like that in the ring for Dubois. Slowly tuning himself into a top fighter from a young pro to a mature one across 24 fights.
Tonight could be when he really hits the highest of notes.

Brown 'not surprised' by Horner's Red Bull sacking

McLaren Racing chief executive officer Zak Brown says he was "not surprised" Christian Horner was sacked as team boss of Red was dismissed as team principal and CEO of Red Bull on 9 July, three days after their driver Max Verstappen finished fifth in the British Grand told Canadian television channel TSN: "I'm maybe [surprised by] the timing, but not the result."There's been a lot of drama there the last couple of years and it doesn't seem like that drama has been calming down - maybe been getting worse. So I'm not surprised."Red Bull has given no reason for the removal of Horner, who has been replaced by Frenchman Laurent Mekies, formerly the principal of second team Racing had led the team since their debut in 2005. His departure came 17 months after it emerged that a female employee had accused him of sexual harassment and coercive, controlling behaviour. Two separate Red Bull internal investigations dismissed the allegations, which Horner has always then, Red Bull have gone through a tempestuous period, including a decline in their competitiveness. Their chief technical officer Adrian Newey resigned in April last year, at least partly as a result of the allegations against Horner. Newey - regarded as the greatest F1 designer in history - now works for Aston July last year, long-time sporting director Jonathan Wheatley also resigned. He is now team principal of Sauber, which next year is morphing into Audi's factory in September Red Bull head of strategy Will Courtenay signed for McLaren. He is currently being held to his contract and is expected to join his new team at some point next year. While Verstappen won his fourth consecutive world title last season, the Dutchman won only twice in the final 13 races of the year and Red Bull finished third in the constructors' year, Verstappen is third in the drivers' championship with just two wins in the first 12 races and the team fourth in the constructors' championship, and Red Bull have been engulfed by speculation about whether the Dutchman might leave for Mercedes at the end of the has had a strained relationship with Horner over the past few said Red Bull's breaching of the budget cap in 2021 "constitutes cheating", and in an interview with BBC Sport last summer Brown said he and Horner "used to get on".Brown has taken a less provocative approach to Horner this year, but has not hidden his disdain for Red Bull's sniping about the legality of the McLaren car behind the the Miami Grand Prix, he drank from a bottle labelled "tyre water", a reference to Horner complaining to the FIA about their belief that McLaren were using water to cool their tyres. Brown considered the allegation spurious, and said it had no foundation in described the bottle as "poking fun at a serious issue".Brown said: "Teams have historically made allegations of other teams - most recently one team focuses on that strategy more than others. And I think that there is a proper way to protest a team at the end of a race, and you have to make it formal, disclose where it comes from, put some money down."

Former undisputed world champion Josh Taylor retires from boxing

Former undisputed world champion Josh Taylor has revealed that he has been forced to retire from boxing on medical advice. Taylor underwent surgery to deal with an eye issue last year but after a return to the ring and a defeat to Ekow Essumen in May, he has been told by specialists that the risks are too great to continue fighting. The 34-year-old Scot now draws a line under a career that say him rise to the very top and establish himself as one of the country's greatest ever boxers. He began his career as an amateur and made headlines with a Commonwealth Games gold in front of a home crowd at Glasgow 2014. From there, the fighter known as 'the Tartan Tornado' went on to become world champion and then become the first British fighter to unify the titles in the four-belt era and one of few to ever do it. Injuries forced him to vacate three of his belts and he lost the WBO belt to Teofimo Lopez in 2023. Defeats to Jack Catterall and Essumen followed and he said it's sad to be having to hand up his gloves now. A statement on social media read: 'Right folks, this isn't an easy post for me to write, but on the advice of my doctors, it's sadly a necessary one. 'As has been publicised before, I've had a recurring issue with my eye that unfortunately means I now have to call time on my career or risk losing my eyesight. 'While the fighter in me always wants to box on, I know I have to listen to the medical professionals and save me from myself. 'It is certainly not the way I wanted to bow out but I have to listen to the doctors and those around me. 'I am just a kid from the Pans who scaled the very top of the sport but I could not have done it without those who have supported me through thick and thin.' Martin and Tavernier speak to media ahead of Champions League qualifier

Rangers head coach Russell Martin and captain James Tavernier are speaking to the media ahead of their first Champions League qualifier. The Ibrox club host Greek side Panathinaikos in Glasgow on Tuesday in what will be their first competitive game of the new season. It will also be Martin's first game in the Rangers dugout other than pre-season friendlies. Earlier on Monday, they learned that if they get past Panathinaikos, they will face a trip to the Czech Republic or Switzerland in the third round of qualifiers. The winners of the Viktoria Plzen and Servette will be next up in their quest towards the holy grail of the Champions League. However, if they are knocked out by the Athens club, then they have been handed a tough Europa League draw against either Besiktas from Turkey or Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. The second, and ultimately decisive return leg of the game against Panathinaikos will take place in Athens next Wednesday.
