Marcus Rashford among five players who have told Man Utd they want to leave club

MANCHESTER UNITED FORWARD Marcus Rashford is one of five players who have told the club they want to leave Old Trafford this summer. It is understood Rashford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have all informed United they see their futures lying elsewhere. United have responded by delaying their scheduled return for pre-season training until the end of July to allow them time to find new clubs. Should none of the players secure a new deal elsewhere before the end of the month, they will be welcomed back to Carrington, where they will continue to have full access to medical and training support. It's also understood that summer signing Matheus Cunha will be given the number 10 shirt for next season and United have informed Rashford's representatives of the decision. Rashford scored four goals in 17 appearances during his time at Villa Park, but the Midlands club decided not to activate the €46 million (£40m) option to buy him. The 27-year-old, who fell out of favour at United under head coach Ruben Amorim, is reportedly keen on a move to Barcelona and does not want a move to London, ruling out the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. Advertisement There is also reported interest from Germany, Italy and Saudi Arabia for the player, who has scored 17 goals in 62 appearances for England. Garnacho, who made his first-team debut for United as a 17-year-old in 2022 after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020, has scored 16 goals in 93 Premier League appearances. But his relationship with Amorim has also deteriorated after he vented his frustration on social media following his omission from United's starting line-up in their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. The Argentinian has been linked with both Chelsea and Italian champions Napoli. Antony failed to justify his huge price tag at Old Trafford after arriving from Ajax in a €95m (£82m) deal in 2022, but he rediscovered top form after joining Real Betis on loan in January. Sancho has also endured a difficult spell at United following his arrival from Borussia Dortmund for €85m (£73m) in 2021. His only appearance for United since his fall out with former boss Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2023 came in the 2024 Community Shield against Manchester City. After spending last season on loan at Chelsea, the Londoners opted to pay a €6m (£5m) fine rather than sign Sancho permanently for €29m (£25m). He has been reported to have held talks with Juventus. Malacia, signed for €15m (£13m) from Feyenoord in 2022, made three Premier League appearances for United last season before switching to PSV Eindhoven on loan.

Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford among five who tell Manchester United they want out

Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford are among five players who have asked to leave Manchester United and been told they do not need to return for pre-season training next week. Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho have also requested transfers and been given more time away from the club to sort their futures. Rashford, whose No 10 shirt has been given to the new signing Matheus Cunha, was sent on loan last season with Malacia, Antony and Sancho and it was always unlikely they would have a future under Ruben Amorim. Garnacho struggled for minutes in the latter part of the season and was a substitute in the Europa League final defeat by Tottenham. 'I played 20 minutes today – I don't know,' he said after that game. 'I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next.' The club have made their rehabilitation and medical facilities available to the five players but they will not be part of group sessions. If any fail to secure a departure, they will be welcomed back to train at Carrington later in July. Garnacho has been linked with Chelsea, and Rashford has interested Barcelona, who have missed out on the Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who has signed a new 10-year contract, enhancing the chances that the England international will head to Catalonia. Rashford has spent time working with a personal trainer in Spain to maintain fitness. Malacia was on loan at PSV last season but the full-back's fitness record has meant interested parties are in short supply. Chelsea did not take up their option to sign Sancho permanently but talks with Juventus have been held recently. Antony impressed at Real Betis after a disastrous spell at Old Trafford. United informed Rashford's representatives of the fact that Cunha would take the No 10 shirt. The change is said not to be related to the forward's clear desire to leave. United are working to overhaul the squad to make it more suited to Amorim's style of play. They have signed Cunha from Wolves and are working on a deal to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford after having two bids rejected for the Cameroonian. United's finances mean they need to sell if they want to buy and they will hope to get about £60m for Garnacho, an academy graduate, which would ease the situation. The four forwards' wages will limit the number of prospective suitors. Guardian
