Petrol, HSD prices slashed
In a notification, Finance Division states, 'The government has decided to revise the prices of petroleum products for the forthcoming fortnight, based on the recommendations of OGRA & the relevant ministries'.
The new price of petrol has come down from Rs 254.63 to Rs 252.63 per litre and HSD rate has also revised down ward from Rs 258.64 to Rs 256.64 per litre.
The decline in crude oil prices has marginally translated into lower costs for petroleum products in Pakistan. However, the government's recent decision to abolish the Fifth Schedule—previously a mechanism that limited the petroleum levy to a maximum of Rs 70 per liter has raised questions about whether the full benefits of lower crude prices will be passed on to consumers.
The government is charging Rs 78.02 per litre PL on petrol and Rs 77.01 per litre on HSD. The IFEM rate has revised downward from Rs 6.89 to Rs 6.30 per litre but OMC's margin has kept unchanged at Rs 7.87 per litre and dealer margin at Rs 8.64 per litre.
Kerosene Oil price has raised from Rs 250.14 to Rs 252.13 per litre with effect from May 1, 2025.

Two water projects worth over Rs70bn to be launched in Faisalabad
LAHORE: The Punjab government has launched two mega water infrastructure projects in Faisalabad worth over Rs 70 billion. Punjab Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal chaired a meeting. On this occasion, WASA Faisalabad MD Sohail Qadir Cheema gave a detailed briefing on the projects, disclosed a department spokesperson on Monday. According to the briefing, two major water infrastructure projects - a surface water treatment plant and a wastewater treatment plant - are being launched in Faisalabad to improve access to clean water. The first project will cost Rs 14.6 billion while the second one will cost over Rs 56 billion; international donor agencies will fund these projects. The surface water treatment plant is scheduled for completion by June 2027, and the wastewater treatment plant will be completed by July 2028. While addressing the meeting, the Secretary stated that once completed, these plants will treat a total of 63 million gallons of water per day, benefiting more than 700,000 residents in the eastern parts of Faisalabad. He added that over 56,000 households will receive access to safe drinking water through these efforts. 'The treated wastewater will be made suitable for agricultural use, contributing to resource conservation and environmental sustainability,' he added. Mengal also shared that in future, a total of three wastewater treatment plants were planned for Faisalabad to meet the city's growing population and urban needs. 'Under the directives of Chief Minister Punjab, we are ensuring the smart and efficient use of public resources to provide equal and high-quality urban services across all regions,' he emphasised. Meanwhile, in a separate meeting, the Secretary reviewed the progress made on the 'Apni Chat Apna Ghar' programme. On this occasion, he said over 8,000 families have already completed construction of their homes, while more than 35,000 families have received second loan installments for the construction. He added that the government aims at facilitating the construction of over 100,000 homes annually under this flagship initiative. Mengal further revealed that the programme has received more than 1.5 million applications to date, a clear reflection of public confidence and overwhelming interest. 'To ensure convenience, the entire application process has been made online,' he added. According to him, under the people-first vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the 'Apni Chat Apna Ghar' programme is transforming the dream of homeownership into reality for thousands of low-income families across the province. ‘Waste to Value' project launched: CM lauds successful biogas production experiment
LAHORE: 'A successful experiment for making biogas from biodegradable animal waste has been conducted at Lakhodair in Lahore, for the first time in history,' Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif informed on Monday. While chairing a briefing session on biogas production from waste project of Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), the CM directed the authorities concerned to start the 'Waste to Value' project under 'Suthra Punjab' Programme at the earliest. The chief minister was briefed by the authorities concerned, 'Approximately 20 to 25 thousand kg of gas can be produced from 1000 metric tons of waste, and a revenue of Rs 60 to 70 lakh can be generated from biogas production from the waste of sacrificial animals.' They said, '275,000 tons of carbon credits and $4.2 million income will be earned from the rehabilitation of disposal site annually.' They added, 'A pilot project for producing biogas from waste in Lahore at a cost of just a few lakhs has been successful. A 50-MW waste to energy plant will be able to convert 3,000 tons of waste into electricity daily. In 10 years, the gas obtained from the landfill site will generate $2.5 million.' The Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also reviewed a model of a recycling park, which could generate annual revenue of Rs 190 million. She was apprised, 'Rehabilitation of Lakhodair disposal site is expected to generate 2.75 lakh tons of carbon credits and $4.2 million in annual income. There will be a 60% reduction in waste from landfills through municipal solid waste treatment.' The CM was also briefed by the authorities concerned, 'Waste to Value Incubation Centre will provide technical support, seed funding, research and development opportunities for startups.' Miftah for probe into sugar export ‘crisis'
KARACHI: Former federal finance minister Miftah Ismail on Monday called for a thorough investigation into the country's recent sugar export crisis alleging that the policy benefited only a select group of sugar mill owners and was driven by vested government interests. Addressing at a press conference in Karachi, Ismail categorically rejected corruption allegations levelled against him by two senators from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), terming them 'baseless and politically motivated.' He singled out PML-N leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, stating that the former minister had already apologised to him privately for making false accusations regarding the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). 'I was in jail when the funds for this program were raised,' Ismail said, insisting he had no involvement in the alleged mismanagement. 'These allegations are being made simply because I speak the truth about the failures of this government,' he said, adding that if Chaudhry or any other accuser has evidence, they should bring it forward. 'Otherwise, apologise or be ready to face the court,' he added. Commenting on the sugar export policy, the former finance minister said the export was deliberately carried out to create an artificial price hike. 'Sugar was exported to make it expensive. Only mill owners benefited, and the decision was taken in an organised way,' he alleged. In a surprising revelation, Ismail said that the foreign minister was made the head of the committee overseeing sugar matters — a move he described as unprecedented and a reflection of the government's conflict of interest. 'This is not just about sugar; this is about the government's priorities,' he said. Ismail also criticised the federal government's policies, especially in the agriculture and energy sectors. 'The current government is not farmer-friendly. The farming community has been left to suffer while sugar barons thrive,' he said, expressing concern over rising input costs and a lack of subsidies. On the issue of power tariffs, Ismail lamented the growing burden on the common citizen. 'Electricity prices are increasing every other day. The poor are being crushed under the weight of overbilling and inefficiencies,' he said, referring to the recent Rs 244 billion in electricity overbilling. 'If you are honest, return this amount to the people.' Taking aim at the ruling party, he said, 'Shehbaz Sharif's government has been in power for three years, but all we see is worsening governance and growing public misery. Even good governance has been washed away by the floods in Punjab.' He also expressed sorrow over the recent tragedies, including the boat sinking in Gwadar and deaths caused by monsoon rains across the country. 'I offer my deepest condolences to the families affected by these disasters,' he said.
