MACC cracks down on scrap metal smuggling rings in five states
The operation, conducted in collaboration with enforcement agencies, targeted businesses suspected of bribing officials to evade export taxes.
Raids were carried out at 19 locations in Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, and Kedah under 'Op Metal.'
The crackdown involved the MACC's Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS), the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, the Inland Revenue Board, and Bank Negara Malaysia.
One of the first raids took place at a luxury bungalow in Batu Maung, believed to belong to a scrap metal company owner.
Authorities searched the premises for evidence while the businessman was reportedly abroad.
Another raid followed at a scrap metal processing site in Bukit Mertajam, where documents and materials linked to smuggling activities were seized.
A source revealed that the syndicates exported scrap metal to countries like India and China but falsely declared shipments to avoid the 15% export tax.
'The syndicates are believed to have bribed enforcement officers to bypass inspections,' the source said. Over six years, this scheme allegedly caused RM160 million in annual tax losses, totaling RM950 million.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the operation, stating that investigations are ongoing under anti-money laundering laws.
Authorities are also probing potential involvement of public servants in protecting the syndicates. - Bernama

Sabah appoints first local MACC chief

KOTA KINABALU: Starting on August 15, Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah will become the first Sabahan to lead the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in the state. He succeeds Datuk Karunanithy Y. Subbiah, who has served in various roles within the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for nearly 11 years and has been the Sabah MACC chief since September 17, 2019. Mohd Fuad, previously the Penang MACC chief, will have his duties there taken over by Karunanithy. Before the handover, Karunanithy highlighted his collaboration with the Sabah MACC team, achieving numerous successful raids, operations, and community activities. Significant operations under his leadership included Ops Penyata for falsified bank statements, Ops Tax concerning sales tax leakages, Ops Syringe for overtime claims, and Ops YB where civilians posed as enforcement officers. Karunanithy said that as of July 31 this year, the Sabah MACC received 278 reports, opened 137 initial investigation papers, and 44 full investigation papers. During this period, 41 arrests and 28 charges were made. 'With the state government, we have set up a special task force to trace over RM64.50mil in leaked state sales tax as well,' he said, citing the MACC's achievements. MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, who witnessed the handover, expressed confidence that Mohd Fuad's appointment in his hometown of Sabah would lead to more achievements. 'I am sure Mohd Fuad will be able to lay out more aggressive strategies to fight graft in this state,' he said, adding that MACC officials are tasked not only with combating corruption but also with preventing long-term leakages. He emphasised that agency leaders must help prevent leakages so the state can feel long-term impacts. Earlier, Ahmad commended Karunanithy for building public trust in the MACC and leading many high-profile graft cases. In response, Karunanithy thanked the state, departments, agencies, media, and his MACC team for their support. He urged the Sabah MACC force to fully support the new director in the mission to combat corruption in the state. 'I believe with his vast knowledge and experience, Datuk Fuad will bring Sabah MACC to greater heights,' he said.

PAS fumes as Madani gov't 'washes hands in dirty money allegation' with PMX, Vincent Tan implicated
PAS has slammed Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail over the latter's 'hilariously brief' parliamentary reply to a question on outcome to a police probe over a viral video of the PKR Wangsa Maju division head claiming to have received election funding from party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In his reply to questions #37 dated Aug 4 from PAS Pasir Mas MP Fadhli Shaari over the funds believed to have emanated from tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun, Saifuddin merely stated that 'initial review and investigation on the matter points to internal auditing issues and administrative problems within the party'. 'There is a clear violation of the law involving the giver (Vincent Tan), the first recipient (PMX) and the second recipient (PKR division head),' Central PAS Information Committee's Research and Policy Department director Nurul Islam Mohamed Yusoff lashed out. 'This is no longer an organisational issue. It is an accusation from a PKR division head who clearly stated that he received illegal funds from Vincent Tan through the PKR president who is also the Prime Minister.' For context, Fadhli who is also the Islamist party's information chief had on May 17 given PMX an ultimatum to officially deny the viral video which purportedly showed PKR Wangsa Maju branch chief Lai Chen Heng admitting to receiving funding from PMX but was 'advised' not to declare/audit the proceeds to avoid any money trail. Nurul Islam further urged PMX to come clean 'by coming forward to explain if there is truth in the allegation, how much money was received, who were the recipients of such funding at the division head level and so forth'. This is because the matter goes beyond 'an internal issue of a political party' for it involves possible violations of national laws including Section 4(1) and Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA 2001). 'The PKR secretary-general (Datuk Fuziah Salleh) had previously stated thar PKR will take disciplinary action against the PKR Wangsa Maju division chief after the party's national congress,' recalled Nurul Islam. Ministry committed to curbing gangsterism
A TOTAL of 367 juvenile offences involving youths were recorded at Integrity Schools and Henry Gurney Schools as of June 2025, the Education Minister revealed. Fadhlina Sidek (pic) said these included 172 drug offences, 21 sexual offences and other violations under laws such as the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act, Road Transport Act, National Registration Act and Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma). In a written reply to Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi (PN-Kuala Kedah), Fadhlina said her ministry was committed to curbing gangsterism and misconduct among students through a range of initiatives. These included enforcement guidelines under SPI 6/2000 and the Safe School Programme (SPI 4/2002), which aims to ensure school safety and deter drug abuse and violence. The Caring School initiative (SPI 5/2023) promotes stronger ties between students, teachers and parents to create a safer and more harmonious learning environment, she added. The minister said guidance and counselling teachers played a key role in identifying at-risk students, offering psychosocial support and leading early interventions. The appointment of Character Ambassadors, Peer Counsellors and student leaders also encourages positive peer influence, she added. To further shape student behaviour, the ministry launched the Character Building for the Madani Generation pilot programme in 2024, she said. Focusing on values, discipline, patriotism and volunteerism, it aims to build students' resilience against negative influences like gangsterism. Following encouraging results, the initiative was expanded across all ministry institutions this year – from preschool to post-secondary – as part of efforts to foster safe, disciplined and student-centred schools, she added. Fadhlina also said that students suspended for misconduct can take part in the 'Bangkit Bermaruah' community service programme, which offers a restorative approach to rehabilitation through structured outreach activities. She emphasised that cooperation among schools, parents, police, local communities and education offices remains vital, adding that disciplinary action should not deprive students of their right to learn.
