Sabah appoints first local MACC chief
KOTA KINABALU: Starting on August 15, Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah will become the first Sabahan to lead the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in the state.
He succeeds Datuk Karunanithy Y. Subbiah, who has served in various roles within the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for nearly 11 years and has been the Sabah MACC chief since September 17, 2019.
Mohd Fuad, previously the Penang MACC chief, will have his duties there taken over by Karunanithy.
Before the handover, Karunanithy highlighted his collaboration with the Sabah MACC team, achieving numerous successful raids, operations, and community activities.
Significant operations under his leadership included Ops Penyata for falsified bank statements, Ops Tax concerning sales tax leakages, Ops Syringe for overtime claims, and Ops YB where civilians posed as enforcement officers.
Karunanithy said that as of July 31 this year, the Sabah MACC received 278 reports, opened 137 initial investigation papers, and 44 full investigation papers.
During this period, 41 arrests and 28 charges were made.
'With the state government, we have set up a special task force to trace over RM64.50mil in leaked state sales tax as well,' he said, citing the MACC's achievements.
MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, who witnessed the handover, expressed confidence that Mohd Fuad's appointment in his hometown of Sabah would lead to more achievements.
'I am sure Mohd Fuad will be able to lay out more aggressive strategies to fight graft in this state,' he said, adding that MACC officials are tasked not only with combating corruption but also with preventing long-term leakages.
He emphasised that agency leaders must help prevent leakages so the state can feel long-term impacts.
Earlier, Ahmad commended Karunanithy for building public trust in the MACC and leading many high-profile graft cases.
In response, Karunanithy thanked the state, departments, agencies, media, and his MACC team for their support.
He urged the Sabah MACC force to fully support the new director in the mission to combat corruption in the state.
'I believe with his vast knowledge and experience, Datuk Fuad will bring Sabah MACC to greater heights,' he said.

MACC strengthens ties with Sarawak Ombudsman for governance
KUCHING: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) reaffirmed its commitment to backing the Sarawak Ombudsman in improving governance and integrity. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that collaboration, including officer secondment and knowledge-sharing, began before the Ombudsman's formation. 'Before the establishment of the Ombudsman, we had sent our officers to hold engagement sessions and for benchmarking in several countries,' he said. Azam added that MACC officers with integrity expertise are already assisting the Sarawak Ombudsman. He made these remarks after meeting the Sarawak Premier at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi. The Sarawak Ombudsman Bill 2023 was passed on Nov 20, 2023, allowing public complaints against maladministration in state agencies. The bill seeks to improve transparency, accountability, and public service efficiency. Azam highlighted the uniqueness of Sarawak's Ombudsman compared to other Malaysian states. 'Only Sarawak has its own Ombudsman, serving as a dedicated oversight body for governance,' he noted. - Bernama

MACC Continues Support, Cooperation With Sarawak Ombudsman
GENERAL KUCHING, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will continue to support the Sarawak Ombudsman in its efforts to enhance governance and integrity within the state administration. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said assistance and cooperation, including the sharing of expertise and the secondment of officers, had begun even before the Sarawak Ombudsman was established. 'Before the establishment of the Ombudsman, we had sent our officers to hold engagement sessions and for benchmarking in several countries (to study their Ombudsman models). 'Our officers with expertise in integrity have also been seconded to the Sarawak Ombudsman, and we will continue this collaborative effort,' he told reporters after paying a courtesy visit on Sarawak Premier at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here today. On Nov 20, 2023, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly passed the Sarawak Ombudsman Bill 2023, enabling the public to report cases of maladministration involving state public service agencies. The bill aims to enhance transparency and accountability in government agencies while ensuring the presence of checks and balances and enabling improvements in public service delivery and procedures. Meanwhile, Azam said the establishment of the Sarawak Ombudsman was important as it provided a dedicated platform to monitor issues related to governance and administrative ethics. 'If we look at other states in Malaysia, they do not have their own Ombudsman; only Sarawak does. This Ombudsman is a good platform because it is a specific body that oversees matters related to governance in government administration,' he said. --BERNAMA

'Muhyiddin a victim,' Tun Faisal rejects MCMC classifying ex-PM as witness
Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz has accused the MACC of mischaracterising party president Muhyiddin Yassin's role in an ongoing investigation implicating him in a statement related to targeted RON95 subsidies. Insisting that the Perikatan Nasional chairperson is the victim in the case, Tun Faisal rejected MCMC's classification of Muhyiddin as a 'witness' and instead pinned the blame on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
