International tourists' team hails cultural richness
The visit marked a significant moment in Pakistan's cultural diplomacy efforts as Executive Director Tauqeer Haider Kazmi welcomed the guests and led them on a guided tour of Alhamra's facilities. Kazmi described the occasion as a reflection of Alhamra's mission to safeguard and promote Pakistan's artistic legacy while fostering global cultural dialogue.

The delegation visited the Alhamra Art Gallery, where they viewed a contemporary exhibition centered on themes of heritage, sustainability, and innovation. They also spent time at the Alhamra Academy of Performing Arts, observing live music, dance, and drama classes, and engaging with students and instructors. Visitors expressed admiration for the academy's work in preserving classical traditions while nurturing new artistic talent.
Moved by their experience, the guests described Pakistan as 'a land of immeasurable cultural richness and extraordinary human warmth,' praising the hospitality they received and calling the country 'a treasure trove of tradition, creativity, and heart.'
The visit culminated in a special evening performance at Alhamra Hall No 2, where members of the international delegation took to the stage to share music, dance, and songs from their respective cultures. A local audience of art lovers and families responded with enthusiastic applause, celebrating the harmony and shared spirit of the event.

Fawad's upcoming film ‘Abir Gulaal' set to release worldwide on 29 August
Fawad Khan's latest Bollywood film is finally set to release following a ban on Pakistani artists in India. Playing the role of a UK-based chef, Fawad appears opposite Bollywood actor Vaani Kapoor. Directed by Aarti S. Bagdi, known for Chalti Rahe Zindagi, Abir Gulaal is expected to be a cross-cultural film that highlights the chemistry between Fawad and Vaani. The film is produced by Indian Stories, A Richer Lens, and Aarjay Pictures. It is co-produced by Vivek B. Agarwal, Avantika Hari, and Rakesh Sippy. Abir Gulaal will be an addition to the romantic comedy genre. Lisa Hayden and Farida Jalal are also part of the cast. It will mark Fawad's return to Bollywood after nine years. The film remains banned in India but will be released worldwide this month. The ban on Pakistani actors was implemented by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) following the Palagham attack in April. The release of Sardaar JI 3 which starred Pakistani actor Hania Aamir and Abir Gulaal that casted Fawad in lead role were both halted. Abir Gulaal was originally slated to release on May 9. The film had generated buzz among fans, particularly due to Fawad's return to the Bollywood scene. Fawad made his Bollywood debut in 2014 with Khoobsurat, starring opposite Sonam Kapoor. He went on to appear in Dharma Productions's Kapoor & Sons and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which was his last Indian project before the ban on Pakistani artists in 2016. Entries open for national art award
Gallery 6 Islamabad has opened a call for young artists from across Pakistan to participate in the 6th edition of the Arjumand Painting Award (APA), a national biennial competition that recognises and supports young painters. Established in 2015, APA is the first art award of its kind instituted by a private gallery in Pakistan, offering substantial cash prizes and national visibility. The award aims to celebrate originality and excellence in painting among young Pakistani artists. Four cash prizes have been announced with Rs400,000 allocated for first prize, Rs300,000 for second prize, Rs200,000 for third prize, and a Merit Award worth Rs50,000. In addition to the prize money, selected participants may also be offered art residencies, exhibitions and promotional opportunities both in Pakistan and abroad. All artists aged 20 to 45 years, residing in Pakistan, are eligible to apply. Each applicant may submit one painting, completed in 2024 or 2025. Works that are digitally or mechanically produced, or only drawings, are not eligible. The deadline for submission of painting images via email is 26 September 2025. Details and submission forms are available on the Gallery 6 Facebook and Instagram pages. The Arjumand Painting Award has steadily grown in stature since its inception. Previous editions have attracted wide participation from across the country and have played a significant role in launching the careers of many young artists. The award is widely regarded as a credible and transparent platform for identifying and promoting emerging talent. Artist and educator R.M. Naeem noted, "Gallery 6 is a major player in the art landscape of Pakistan. The institution of APA is a commendable step toward recognising and nurturing Pakistani art, judged by a highly reputable jury." Art critic Aasim Akhtar described the award as "a promising event that not only guides young artists but gives them respect and encouragement to continue their practice." Artist and former professor at the University of Karachi, Durriya Kazi, emphasised the award's importance in providing support to artists navigating a rapidly globalising world. This year, to further enhance the scope of the Arjumand Painting Award, it is being supported by three collaborating partners, Nighat Ali, an art patron from Lahore, the Ercelawn Art Fund, established in memory of the late economist and activist Aly Alp Ercelawn, and Millat Tractors Limited. The organisers encourage widespread participation, both from artists based in cities and regions outside the established art hubs of Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. The award continues to provide a unique opportunity for self-taught and formally trained artists alike, to gain national recognition.

Have you ever wondered what happens when the fight for power plays out in the wild, amongst creatures we think we know? What if a timeless fable could hold up a mirror to our own political world, filled with ambition, rebellion, and the ever-present tension between old ways and new dreams? In the tradition of classic allegorical fables, Dr Zahoor Hussain's novella, Apes' Assembly, uses the world of jungle animals to explore profound themes of power, rebellion, and political transformation. Through the story of a charismatic ape named Nan who overthrows a lion king, the book offers a powerful and timely reflection on leadership and the delicate nature of revolution. The story is told entirely through animal characters, and it functions as a layered political satire, where apes form their own movement and struggle with internal and external forces. The return of Pan and the coronation of Sham create the unresolved tension between change and tradition. The story reflects the ongoing tension between dominant and marginalised forces. Through symbolic characters, it portrays how collective will and strategy can challenge established power, highlighting the fragility of authority and the recurring nature of such confrontations. Overall, Apes' Assembly stands as a powerful amalgam of literary techniques as it combines anthropomorphism, lyrical refrains, repetition, and exaggerated expressions to craft a vivid and symbolically rich narrative. The novella reflects a thoughtful blend of literary and linguistic awareness beyond its political commentary. The use of poetic chants, rich connotations, and occasional ecological references suggest a broader symbolic reading. Dr Zahoor Hussain's imaginative scope and storytelling craft shine throughout and make Apes' Assembly a significant contribution to contemporary literature in Pakistan. This blend of folklore with modern political insight creates a distinct narrative that speaks to both literary sensibility and socio-political consciousness. Hence, the novella contributes to a growing body of indigenous allegorical fiction that resists imported narrative models and centres on local expression. The characters, settings, and narrative events are designed with strong metaphorical resonance. 'The Banyan Tree' as a revolutionary hub and 'The Royal Den' as a symbol of tradition highlight the depth with which the author embeds meaning into locations. These spaces are not just part of the plot but carry thematic weight that helps readers reflect on real-world systems and the cyclical nature of power. What further distinguishes the novella is its stylistic range as it moves seamlessly between humour, poetry, and sharp observation. The lyrical refrains add rhythm to the political tone, while the use of various animal archetypes creates a layered narrative. Apes' Assembly invites readers to think critically, but it does so with creativity and cultural rootedness by offering both engagement and insight. Apes' Assembly can be situated within a Marxist framework, as it showcases class struggle, rebellion, and the corrupting nature of power through the apes' strategic rebellion against the established lion monarchy. Nan's rise and eventual fall depict how revolutionary ideals can be compromised once power shifts hands, which is a key Marxist concern. Additionally, the novel could also be read through the lens of allegorical satire with postcolonial traces. The shifting of power, the use of animals to critique ruling systems, and the unstable jungle society may represent postcolonial states where liberation often leads to new forms of oppression or disorder. The use of symbolic spaces like the 'Banyan Tree' and 'Royal Den' may represent ideological institutions in postcolonial societies. Furthermore, the jungle as a living space being disrupted by political ambition and conflict introduces eco-critical aspect, where the breakdown of natural order parallels societal decay. Ultimately, Apes' Assembly is more than just a captivating tale; it's a resonant call to examine the intricate dance between power, principle, and the perennial human (or rather, animal) struggle for true freedom. It leaves readers pondering whether the cycle of power can ever truly be broken, or if every revolution is destined to forge its own chains.
