Kaytron Allen poised for big 2025 season after strong postseason showing in 2024
Here's a look at Allen heading into the 2025 season with the Nittany Lions.
2024 in review
Though his 2023 campaign fell short of expectations, Allen bounced back last year with over 1,100 rushing yards on 5.0 yards per carry, adding eight rushing touchdowns. He battled injuries throughout the middle of the season and was less than 100% for several games, but Allen peaked during Penn State's postseason run with 124 yards against Oregon in the Big Ten championship, 70 yards on just 11 carries against SMU in the first round of the College Football Playoff, 134 yards against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl and 82 yards against Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl.
Biggest question in 2025
The biggest question entering 2025 is whether Allen can stay healthy for a full season. His physical play style and penchant for violence cause wear and tear that leaves him at less than 100%. If Penn State can keep him healthy and reduce his workload in blowouts, Allen is likely to perform better against top competition.
2025 will be a success if…
This season will be a success if Allen can generate more explosive plays. His longest run in 2024 was just 32 yards, and his yards per carry dropped slightly from his first two seasons. For Allen to truly take the next step in his development, more chunk plays could lead to a career-high in rushing yards in 2025.
2025 will be a disappointment if…
If Penn State's wide receivers aren't able to demonstrate a credible vertical threat, Allen may struggle against loaded boxes. If the Nittany Lions' passing game is unable to take the attention of Allen, it'll be hard for him to find much success as he relies on running through defenders rather than around them.
Realistic outlook for 2025
Based on Allen's steady output over the past three seasons, another 1,000-yard campaign seems likely, particularly if Penn State enjoys a deep postseason run. Without Tyler Warren competing for red-zone targets, Allen could see his touchdown total reach double digits. Sustaining his postseason form into the regular season would solidify his status as one of the nation's elite running backs.

Sauce Speaks Out On Jets QB Justin Fields as Matchup Nightmare
Sauce Speaks Out On Jets QB Justin Fields as Matchup Nightmare originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets this offseason gave Justin Fields a two-year, $40 million contract ... and they have given him the starting job. Advertisement There is no doubt about all of that. The real question surrounding New York's new signal-caller is whether he can prove himself able to develop into a quality "franchise quarterback'' - regardless of the price tag. Through the first four seasons, Fields was unable to establish that he was "that guy.'' Amid a number of athleticism-based highlights, struggled mightily for both the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers in terms of being a consistent performer, especially as a passer. His time in Pittsburgh - ah, those highlights! - stood out to the Jets, though. While he sat on the bench for most of the team's 2024 Week 7 win over New York, Fields was still someone the Jets had to key on whenever he went on the field. Advertisement "We didn't know if Justin was going to play or not and who was going to be the starter," Jets' All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner recalled Wednesday on "The Pat McAfee Show regarding his new quarterback. "We had to change the whole game plan for Justin, just for him to not even play that game, just for Russ (Russell Wilson) to be the starter. So then we went back to the other game plan like the night before or something like that." Gardner's comments show the kind of matchup nightmare Fields can be when he plays at a high level. ... but as a true dual threat. That's why the Jets wanted to bring Fields in the first place. They wanted a quarterback who could win from the pocket and make plays with his legs. Those kinds of signal-callers are very difficult to stop. Advertisement That is what New York is banking on. So long as Fields improves as a passer, the Jets are thrilled with what they have gotten from their new starting quarterback. ... and Gardner's speak-out endorsement is just the latest example of that. Jets' Sauce Gardner Aims To Trick A 'Wizard' In Week 1 vs. Aaron Rodgers' Steelers
Jets' Sauce Gardner Aims To Trick A 'Wizard' In Week 1 vs. Aaron Rodgers' Steelers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. By the time the 2025 NFL season gets underway, in part highlighted by Aaron Rodgers leading the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 against his former New York Jets team, Sauce Gardner plans to be ... Advertisement Richer. Bigger. Trickier. Rodgers, of course, spent the last two seasons with the Jets before he was dumped this offseason, and now he and the Steelers will be visiting MetLife Stadium to play his former team in the season opener. The Jets have made major changes in many ways, but a featured guy remains cornerback Sauce Gardner, who recently told ESPN's The Pat McAfee Show that he's "looking forward to the challenge" of opposing Rodgers in large part due to the brain game of football. "He might think he knows all the tendencies that I have, but this offseason has really been me trying not to give nothing away," Gardner said. "I've been trying to work on literally everything because I already know I'm about to go against a wizard Week 1. Advertisement "I already know what time it is.' Gardner has long said positive things about Rodgers as a teammate ... but now must do any he can to take down the 41-year-old legend. Sauce is now bigger; he is listed at 190 pounds, but the Pro Bowl-level performer has added 10 pounds of muscle this offseason. 'I'm sitting about 200 pounds right now and I don't think I've ever really played that heavy,'' he said. "But it's like the more weight I've put on, the more muscle, the more explosive and the faster I become with that muscle that I've put on.' Gardner is also looking for a contract extension and has said that he believes that talks with the Jets are moving in the proper direction. ... maybe toward the $30 million APY level. Advertisement Gardner was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022, as well as being named First Team All-Pro in both of his first two seasons. He also led the NFL in passes defended in his rookie year with 20 ... and he's ready to do even more in 2025 ... Starting in Week 1 when he'll try to "trick'' a "wizard.'' Justin Fields' Jets Weapons Receive Horrifying Ranking
Justin Fields' Jets Weapons Receive Horrifying Ranking originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets offense under Tanner Engstrand hasn't gotten much love this offseason, with Justin Fields and his weapons not the flavour of the month. Advertisement But we are all basing it on what we "think" will happen, and with only Garrett Wilson as the consistent outlet, it could be tough sledding for the Jets offensively. And it appears that Kyle Long of NFL on CBS thinks so, too. In ranking all pass-catching units from 32 teams with the help of Mike Renner, the Jets' weapons come in the F tier. Yuck. Horrifying. 'The Jets, it's funny, Garrett Wilson, great receiver,' Long said. 'Allen Lazard, some drop issues, but a guy that is a big target, somebody that I think Justin Fields can lean on. But they're going to run the football a lot. So, I hope that they run the rock. It's an O-lineman's dream to play in that offense. You're not going to give up a lot of sacks. Let's just hope that Justin Fields and this receiving core can figure something out and Allen Lazard is not going to drop the ball.' Advertisement Vincent Carchietta - Imagn Images Behind Wilson, it is Josh Reynolds and Lazard, both of whom haven't been high-stat getters over the past couple of seasons, and behind that duo are young, unproven players like Malachi Corley, Tyler Johnson, and Arian Smith. Yes, the Jets will be a run-first offense, with Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, and Isaiah Davis, but Fields has to be able to complement that with a solid passing game, and Long isn't sure he has the weapons to do it. Of course, this is all a projection, and the proof will be when real NFL bullets are flying in the regular season, but New York's biggest red flag this offseason has been its receiver room. Advertisement And until they prove otherwise, many will doubt their ability to put up enough points to win enough games in 2025.
