Lyon held by eliminated Ludogorets but through to last 16

Reuters30-01-2025
Jan 30 (Reuters) - Olympique Lyonnais secured a direct spot for the Europa League last 16 despite a lacklustre 1-1 home draw against Ludogorets in the final round of league phase on Thursday.
The result left the French side in sixth place with 15 points from eight games.
Corentin Tolisso opened the scoring early in the second half after benefiting from a defensive blunder before Dinis Almeida levelled with 13 minutes left.
Lyon were without a permanent coach after Pierre Sage was sacked earlier this week amid a string of poor results with Paulo Fonseca set to succeed him on Friday.
Ludogorets, who were already eliminated, put on a decent fight and could have wrapped up the win in the second half.
The visitors had keeper Sergio Padt to thank for in the opening half but Lyon avoided defeat in the dying second thanks to a superb save by Lucas Perri and were booed by their crowd as they left the pitch.

Yves Bissouma axed by Tottenham for Super Cup over disciplinary issue

Frank will take charge of his first competitive match as Spurs head coach on Wednesday at Stadio Friuli in Udine and could lift a trophy if they can upset Champions League winners Paris St Germain. Bissouma has been left at home after being late 'several times' this summer, but Frank has Dominic Solanke available and will aim to mark his Tottenham bow with further cup glory after predecessor Ange Postecoglou masterminded Europa League success in May. Ange Postecoglou lifts the Europa League trophy after Tottenham's win in the final against Manchester United (Andrew Milligan/PA) 'I think for the team, for me, for everybody involved at Tottenham Hotspur, it's a massive game,' Frank reflected. 'A great challenge and an even bigger opportunity. That's how my brain works, I see opportunities instead of pressure or whatever. So for me, massive opportunity and we will definitely embrace it. 'My players, our players, they just won a big trophy six or seven weeks ago, so they had a fantastic experience of doing that and they want to win more. 'It was a great feeling, everything I heard about it, fantastic experience, so the players will be ready.' Even though PSG only returned to pre-season training last Wednesday following the Club World Cup, Spurs enter this fixture under-strength with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski long-term absentees and Destiny Udogie still sidelined. It makes the omission of Bissouma all the more eye-catching and could spell the end of his time at the club given the Mali international, who started the Europa League final, is into the final 12 months of his contract. Frank explained: 'Bissouma has not travelled with the team because of disciplinary reasons. 'He has been late several times and the latest time was one too many. 'With everything you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and there also need to be consequences and this time there was a consequence for that. 'I will follow up when I come home. I will park it now because there is a relatively important game for tomorrow.' Summer recruits Joao Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus are expected to make their debuts against PSG but Frank will largely turn to the squad that ended Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought under Postecoglou. Guglielmo Vicario was a key figure in their Europa League run and acknowledged how special it will be to play for a trophy in his home city of Udine. Guglielmo Vicario will be on home soil (John Walton/PA) 'Personally, it will be an emotional day but as soon as we get close to kick-off emotions have to stay away and we have to be focused on what we have to deliver on the pitch,' Vicario promised. 'It will be an amazing game and we need to be ready to win. 'We have set the tone and we want to repeat and to do it again. We have tasted the feeling and this feeling is amazing so we want to do it again and we have the opportunity tomorrow with another European final.' Tottenham will announce their new captain on Wednesday after Son Heung-min left to join Los Angeles. Ben Davies, Spurs' longest-serving player after his 2015 arrival, added: 'We lost Sonny and he was a big part of the dressing room and obviously a huge player for us. 'We are definitely going to feel his loss but ultimately the senior guys in this team have to be here to support everyone.'

He now becomes the sixth active Scots player in Serie A (with a seventh, Liam Henderson, having just signed for Sampdoria in Serie B). Udinese have paid Motherwell a fee in the region of £4.5million for his services. The Serie A club posted on X, saying: "One of the brightest young talents in European football joins Udinese. "A modern midfielder, capable of combining technique, vision, and character, he arrives from Motherwell FC with a five-year contract." Kosta Runjaić's men finished 12th in the league last season, the Austrian's first as head coach. Udinese already have former Celtic striker Vakoun Bayo on their books, having signed him from Watford last summer. He was sent back on loan to Vicarage Road for the duration 2024/25 season however, scoring ten goals in 41 Championship appearances. But without doubt the most high-profile name amongst the squad is ex-Arsenal and Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez. Liverpool told Crystal Palace 'desperate' to sell Marc Guehi as £35m move edges closer

Liverpool have opened talks with Crystal Palace over a move for England star Marc Guehi, with their Premier League rivals reportedly eager to make a profit on the player this summer Liverpool have been informed that Crystal Palace are keen to offload Marc Guehi while they can still turn a profit on the defender. Guehi has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and discussions between the clubs have now commenced regarding a potential £35million transfer. ‌ The Reds have also been told that the Palace star surpasses Ibrahima Konate in ability. Palace supporter and broadcaster Rebecca Lowe has suggested the south London outfit are "desperate" to avoid losing Guehi for nothing next summer, with the Premier League champions braced for a hectic conclusion to the transfer window. ‌ Speaking on It's Called Soccer! alongside former Arsenal star Theo Walcott, Lowe reckons her cherished club have been touting the centre-half, whom they acquired from Chelsea for £18m in 2021, to competitors as they seek to secure a considerable sum for the England international while they can. ‌ Questions over Guehi establishing himself in Liverpool's first team have been an ongoing concern. However, Walcott believes the 25-year-old can oust Konate, 26, from his berth in Arne Slot's first XI, as he believes the Englishman has the advantage over the French star due to starting regularly for the Three Lions. "I do [think Guehi is better]," Walcott began. "Because when you look at England particularly and you talk about the centre halves, we're talking about the two best centre halves in the country when you're starting for England, and he's starting for England." Walcott's logic perhaps doesn't add up entirely when comparing the players against an international metric. Guehi has played 23 times for England, matching the number of appearances Konate has for Les Blues, while the latter has also captained his country on one occasion in November 2024. However, Walcott remains adamant the transfer would be worthwhile for the Reds as Guehi would make an immediate difference. "For Guehi, he would fit into that Liverpool team and they have the ball all the time, so he's not going to be challenged as much," Walcott added. "He'll get fitter, he'll learn so much. To play at Liverpool and be next to Virgil van Dijk, these opportunities might not come again." ‌ Liverpool are keen to strengthen their centre-back ranks having allowed Jarell Quansah to join Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the summer. Van Dijk, Konate and Joe Gomez represent their only three senior central defensive choices currently, with Konate entering the final 12 months of his deal and Gomez presently sidelined through injury. Palace chairman Steve Parish acknowledged earlier this week that losing the defender for nothing would pose a "problem" and that Guehi might leave during the current transfer window. And that now appears to be materialising. ‌ Liverpool have now made their approach with talks ongoing over a deal for Guehi for a fee understood to be £30m up front with £5m in add-ons. Personal terms have not yet been agreed with Guehi. However, he's reportedly eager to make the switch. The Reds' interest in Guehi is thought to be separate from their chase for Parma's centre-back Giovanni Leoni, as they also prepare to intensify their pursuit of the 18-year-old.
