MS Dhoni moves to trademark 'Captain Cool', follows in footsteps of Michael Jordan and Cristiano Ronaldo
Former Indian cricket team skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has filed a trademark application with the Trade Marks Registry for the nickname 'Captain Cool'.
The latest move by India's World Cup-winning skipper is considered a significant step in strengthening his brand off the field. It appears Dhoni wants to officially claim ownership of the title which the fans and the cricketing fraternity used for years to define him, reported E4M.
Dhoni had submitted the application online on 5 June via the Trade Marks Registry portal.
The phrase 'Captain Cool' represents Mahendra Singh Dhoni's calm and composed nature on and off the field. The ability to remain calm under pressure helped Dhoni lead India to victory in the 2007 ICC T20 Men's World Cup, the 2011 ICC ODI Men's World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
Under his captaincy, the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings lifted the trophy five times, equaling the feat of Mumbai Indians.
Dhoni's move to trademark his nickname signals a strategic brand play aimed at leveraging it across categories, including merchandise, apparel, and digital content.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not the first sportsman to take this initiative. Michael Jordan had capitalised on his 'Jumpman' logo, and Cristiano Ronaldo set his business empire based on his nickname 'CR7'.
In India, former skipper Sourav Ganguly and Bollywood superstar Salman Khan have followed a similar suit with 'Dada' and 'Being Human' for their ventures.
Even after his retirement, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a formidable commercial force, and his brand valuation is pegged at ₹ 799 crore in 2024. He has over 35 major endorsements.

Bengaluru: The power supply to M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was cut Monday for failing to comply with safety norms, NDTV has learnt. The development comes days after 11 people died in a crowd crush outside the stadium, as tens of thousands turned up to cheer Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title win in the Indian Premier League. According to a letter dated June 4 and received by Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) on June 10, the Director General of Police (Fire & Emergency Services) cited multiple communications to the Karnataka Cricket Association (KSCA) that clearly instructed them to implement necessary fire safety measures at the stadium. The Karnataka cricket body had sought a week's time to resolve the issue. The directive to cut the power supply came after the state cricket body failed to comply with fire safety norms despite being issued multiple advisories. NDTV has learnt that this year's IPL matches at the stadium, with thousands in attendance, were held without adhering to proper fire safety guidelines. Even on the day of the felicitation ceremony when the stampede occurred, the stadium remained non-compliant with prescribed fire norms, said officials.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi Scores 45 As India U19 Lose To England U19, Series Level At 1-1
Riding on captain Thomas Rew's brilliant century, England scraped through with a narrow one-wicket win over India in the second Youth ODI to level the five-match series 1-1 in Northampton on Monday. India, who had won the first match by six wickets at Hove on June 27, posted 290 in 49 overs after being asked to bat. England then chased down the target with three balls to spare, reaching 291 for 9 in 49.3 overs. Medium pacer RS Ambrish took four wickets for 80 runs from his 10 overs to raise hopes of an Indian victory but the last English pair of Sebastian Morgan (20 not out) and Alex French (3 not out) survived the final two overs to give their side a win in a see-saw battle. The home side made a shaky start in their run chase with opener BJ Dawkins (7) back in the dressing room in the second over at team score of just seven. They slumped to 46 for 2 and then to 47 for 3 in the 12th over with Ambrish taking the wickets of Ben Mayes (27) and Isaac Mohammed (11) in quick succession. But Rew (131 off 89 balls) and Rocky Flintoff (39) resurrected the England innings with a 123-run stand for the fourth wicket before the latter got out off Kanishk Chouhan in the 33rd over. Rew, who hit 16 fours and six sixes in his masterly innings, fell in the 40th over off the bowling of Henil Patel and that led to a batting collapse as England were reduced to 254 for 8 by the 46th over. England needed 20 runs from three overs and 12 from two but they had just two wickets in hand. Alex Green (12) fell in the first ball of the penultimate over, the third victim for Ambrish, and England needed seven runs from the final over with the last pair at the crease. England eventually crossed the line with Morgan hitting a four off the third ball of the final over bowled by Yudhajit Guha. Earlier, asked to bat first, opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi (45), Vihaan Malhotra (49), Rahul Kumar (47), Kanishk Chouhan (45) and Abhigyan Kundu (32) made useful contribution to take India to 290 from 49 overs. This was after opener and captain Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for a duck off the first ball of the innings. However, India recovered from that jolt with the other top and middle-order batters coming good. Suryavanshi was among the runs for the second time as he had also made 48 in India's comprehensive win in the first match. For England, AM French was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/71 from his 10 overs while Jack Home (3/63) and Alex Green (3/50) were among the wickets. ASEAN-India Cruise Dialogue 2025 aimed at enhancing cruise operations begins
In a bid to improve the cruise operations across ASEAN and Indian ports and to optimise partnerships, ASEAN-India Cruise Dialogue 2025 began on Monday. The two-day forum has 30 delegates from 10 ASEAN member states which include The Philippines, Brunei, Myanmar, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam discussing about regulatory frameworks, connectivity challenges and best practices in cruise sector. While addressing the media, Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways said, 'It is the second edition of such a dialogue and the first one in the country. This is mainly to develop our collaboration and cooperation to promote cruise industry. This initiative is required so that, in this part of the world, ASEAN and India can play an important role. We want to have a major share in the participation of ocean cruise, sea cruise and river cruise.' T. K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said, the idea was also to have a cruise circuit and involve all these countries in order to make it more lucrative for everyone. Sunil Paliwal, chairman of Cruise Bharat Mission and Chennai and Kamarajar Ports said, the cruise terminal in Chennai Port has been having regular vessel calls. 'After the signing of the agreement in 2022, we started having vessel calls for four months. Next September, the same company is getting one more ship, and then we hope to have one cruise vessel permanently. We are improving on our cruise terminal as well,' he added. Mr. Sonowal also laid the foundation stone for four projects at Chennai Port, including improvement of cruise terminal which would enhance passenger handling capacity, development of paved storage yard on 9.9 hectares, development of seafarers club and conservation, renovation and restoration of old hydraulic power house into a historic monument.
