NIA conducts searches at 15 locations linked to Babbar Khalsa International in Punjab
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday (May 16, 2025) conducted searches on 15 locations linked to banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) in different parts of Punjab, in connection with the grenade attack on a police station in Gurdaspur last December.
'Cracking down further on the activities of the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist group, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday searched 15 locations in Punjab, in connection with the grenade attack on a police station in Gurdaspur district in December last year,' said the agency.
The searches were carried out in the Gurdaspur, Batala, Amritsar, and Kapurthala districts of Punjab, leading to the seizure of various 'incriminating' materials, including mobiles/digital devices and documents.
'On the radar were premises of suspects linked with US-based BKI operative and gangster Harpreet Singh aka Happy Passian and his nodes Shamsher Singh Shera aka Honey along with others based in various countries. A key aide of Pakistan-based BKI terrorist Harwinder Singh aka Rinda, Happy, has been found to be responsible for recently orchestrating numerous grenade attacks on various police stations and police posts in the States of Punjab and Haryana,' it said.
In the U.S.
On April 17, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Enforcement and Removal Operations of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement had arrested 'terrorist' Happy Passian in the U.S. He is allegedly involved in the conspiracy behind 16 terror attacks, including 14 grenade attacks in Punjab.
Between 2023 and 2025, the 29-year-old accused also played a central role in orchestrating targeted killings and extortion across Punjab and other States. The NIA had announced a reward of ₹5 lakh for his arrest related to the hand grenade attack on a house in Chandigarh in September 2024.
He had gone to Dubai in April 2018, from where he returned in February 2019 and then went to the United Kingdom in October 2020, before he shifted to the U.S. It is suspected that Passian was initially associated with the members of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang members, after which he came in contact with Rinda.
In the March 2024 Chandigarh grenade attack case, the NIA submitted a chargesheet against four alleged BKI operatives — Rinda, Passian, Rohan Masih, and Vishal Masih.
In the present case related to the hand grenade attack on Ghanie Ke Bangar police station (Gurdaspur), the NIA had found that those arrested for their role were 'acting on the directions' of Passian, along with Shamsher and other aides.

Singapore Ship That Caught Fire Carried Chemical Used In Explosives & Paint: Sources
Last Updated: This shipment, imported by a Mumbai-based chemical and polymer company, is currently under investigation The MV Wan Hai 503, a Singapore-flagged container vessel, was carrying nitrocellulose, a chemical used in both explosives and paint and polish production, top Indian government sources told CNN-News18 on Tuesday. This shipment, imported by a Mumbai-based chemical and polymer company, is currently under investigation following a serious incident. The vessel experienced an explosion in its containers while it was 130 miles northwest of Kochi. The distress alert was relayed by the MV Cape Valencia to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai. At the time of the incident, the ship was en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Nhava Sheva, Mumbai, with an estimated arrival date of June 10, 2025. The MV Wan Hai 503 had a crew of 22, comprising 9 Chinese, 5 Taiwanese, 5 Burmese, and 3 Indonesian nationals. The ship's master, Wei Chun-Ju, is from Taiwan, said sources. Initial reports indicate that a continuous series of explosions in the containers led to a significant fire onboard. As a result, the crew abandoned the vessel, with 8 boarding a life raft and 10 taking to a survival boat. Unfortunately, 4 crew members are currently missing and are being actively searched for. In the aftermath of the explosions, 15 containers have fallen overboard, posing potential hazards. The MV Marvel, which was in the vicinity, is relaying updates to the MRCC in Mumbai. Officials said the severity of this incident underscores the need for thorough investigations to determine the cause and intended use of the nitrocellulose shipment.

US imposes sanctions on Palestinian charities for allegedly funding Hamas
The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed sanctions on five people and five entities across the Middle East, Africa and Europe, accusing them of being prominent financial supporters of Hamas' military wing under the pretense of conducting humanitarian work in the Gaza Strip and around the world. Those sanctioned include the Gaza-based charity Al Weam Charitable Society, which is accused of being controlled by Hamas, along with its executive director Muhammad Sami Muhammad Abu Marei. Turkey-based charity Filistin Vakfi and its President Zeki Abdullah Ibrahim Ararawi were also targeted for sanctions. Charities in Algeria, the Netherlands and Italy were also targeted for sanctions. The department is also targeting a separate charity linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, or PFLP. A 2024 Treasury report on terrorist financing highlights how online crowdfunding is increasingly done under the guise of soliciting legitimate charitable donations, making it difficult to identify as terrorist financing. Because the majority of crowdfunding activity is legitimate, 'this status can make it more difficult for law enforcement attempting to investigate potential (terrorist financing) cases with a crowdfunding and online fundraising nexus," the report said.
