NIA conducts searches at 15 locations linked to Babbar Khalsa International in Punjab

The Hindu16-05-2025

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday (May 16, 2025) conducted searches on 15 locations linked to banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) in different parts of Punjab, in connection with the grenade attack on a police station in Gurdaspur last December.
'Cracking down further on the activities of the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist group, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday searched 15 locations in Punjab, in connection with the grenade attack on a police station in Gurdaspur district in December last year,' said the agency.
The searches were carried out in the Gurdaspur, Batala, Amritsar, and Kapurthala districts of Punjab, leading to the seizure of various 'incriminating' materials, including mobiles/digital devices and documents.
'On the radar were premises of suspects linked with US-based BKI operative and gangster Harpreet Singh aka Happy Passian and his nodes Shamsher Singh Shera aka Honey along with others based in various countries. A key aide of Pakistan-based BKI terrorist Harwinder Singh aka Rinda, Happy, has been found to be responsible for recently orchestrating numerous grenade attacks on various police stations and police posts in the States of Punjab and Haryana,' it said.
In the U.S.
On April 17, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Enforcement and Removal Operations of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement had arrested 'terrorist' Happy Passian in the U.S. He is allegedly involved in the conspiracy behind 16 terror attacks, including 14 grenade attacks in Punjab.
Between 2023 and 2025, the 29-year-old accused also played a central role in orchestrating targeted killings and extortion across Punjab and other States. The NIA had announced a reward of ₹5 lakh for his arrest related to the hand grenade attack on a house in Chandigarh in September 2024.
He had gone to Dubai in April 2018, from where he returned in February 2019 and then went to the United Kingdom in October 2020, before he shifted to the U.S. It is suspected that Passian was initially associated with the members of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang members, after which he came in contact with Rinda.
In the March 2024 Chandigarh grenade attack case, the NIA submitted a chargesheet against four alleged BKI operatives — Rinda, Passian, Rohan Masih, and Vishal Masih.
In the present case related to the hand grenade attack on Ghanie Ke Bangar police station (Gurdaspur), the NIA had found that those arrested for their role were 'acting on the directions' of Passian, along with Shamsher and other aides.

HC slams NIA's ‘casual approach' in Darivit case

1 2 Kolkata: Criticising NIA's "casual approach" for not submitting a report in the 2018 Darivit school firing case, Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the agency to file it by July 9. On Sept 20, 2018, two youths were killed at North Dinajpur's Islampur when cops fired on people protesting against appointment of teachers at Darivit High School. The deceased were Tapas Barman and Rajesh Sarkar. Told that the informal report had not been signed yet and would take three more weeks to be submitted, a division bench of justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Kumar Mitra said: "I will give appropriate remarks against your officer. They have become very strong and are thinking what will the high court do. It is a casual approach. Do not justify your conduct. In 2024, you were asked to come with a report." The bench asked the NIA counsel when the charge sheet would be filed. The counsel said: "After the probe is over. It will take some time." Asked for an exact time, the counsel added: "It's a faulty probe by the state authorities. No evidence was collected." The bench also asked the victims' families why they had not accepted the Rs 2 lakh compensation. Their counsel said that the state had initially agreed to pay Rs 20 lakh to each family.

Man Succumbs to Injuries Day After Hit-and-Run at Chinchbhuvan

Nagpur: A 29-year-old man from Gittikhadan, Yogesh Bopase, died on Sunday morning, a day after getting seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident near Chinchbhuvan. The accident occurred around 4am on Saturday, when Bopase and a friend were returning from AIIMS hospital after delivering food to a relative admitted there. Police sources said they had left AIIMS at around 3am and were riding back home on a two-wheeler when a speeding car rammed into them from behind near the Chinchbhuvan junction. Bopase, who was wearing a small helmet at the time, sustained severe injuries in the impact and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to injuries a day later. The luxury car involved in the crash is reportedly registered to a Mumbai-based owner. Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle was handed over to a third party for sale and may have been with a prospective buyer at the time of the incident. Police are still verifying the identity of the person who was driving the car during the accident. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene without offering help to the injured, prompting the police to register a case of hit-and-run. Officials are scanning CCTV footage from nearby locations and tracing the vehicle's movements to identify the driver. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "We are in touch with the registered owner of the car, and we are working to confirm who was driving the car at the time of the accident. We have also spoken to the friend who was riding pillion and other eyewitnesses, including nearby labourers," said a police officer involved in the investigation. The Chinchbhuvan stretch has been flagged repeatedly by residents and traffic authorities as accident-prone due to inadequate lighting and poor enforcement of speed limits.
