Cabinet decision to increase MSP of Kharif crops will raise farmers' income: PM Modi
New Delhi [India], May 28 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday said that the cabinet decision to increase in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 Kharif Crops will help increase production of crops and benefit farmers.
'We are fully committed to the welfare of our farmer brothers and sisters across the country. In this direction, an increase in the MSP of 14 crops including paddy, oilseeds and pulses has been approved for the Kharif season of 2025-26. This will increase the production of these crops along with increasing the income of the farmers,' PM Modi'said in a post on X.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by the Prime Minister on Wednesday approved the increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 Kharif Crops for Marketing Season 2025-26.
Government has increased the MSP of Kharif Crops for Marketing Season 2025-26, to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce. The highest absolute increase in MSP over the previous year has been recommended for nigerseed (Rs.820 per quintal) followed by Ragi (Rs.596 per quintal), Cotton (Rs.589 per quintal) and Sesamum (Rs.579 per quintal).
The government, every year, revises the MSP of kharif crops ahead of the sowing by farmers, to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce.
This year, the highest absolute increase in MSP over the previous year has been recommended for Niger seed (Rs 820 per quintal) followed by Ragi (Rs 596 per quintal), Cotton (Rs 589 per quintal) and Sesamum (Rs 579 per quintal).
For paddy, it has been raised by Rs 69. For pulses tur/arhar and moong, it has been raised by Rs 450 and Rs 86, respectively. MSP has been raised for urad by Rs 400.
Coming to oilseeds, MSP for groundnut, sunflower seed, and soybean has been raised by Rs 480, Rs 441, and Rs 436, respectively.For cotton, MSP has been upped by Rs 589.The increase in MSP for Kharif Crops for marketing season 2025-26 is in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement of fixing the MSP at a level of at least 1.5 times of the all-India weighted average cost of production.
The expected margin to farmers over their cost of production are estimated to be highest in case of bajra (63 per cent) followed by maize (59 per cent), tur (59 per cent) and urad (53 per cent). For rest of the crops, margin to farmers over their cost of production is estimated to be at 50 per cent.
'In the recent years, the government has been promoting the cultivation of crops, other than cereals such as pulses and oilseeds, and Nutri-cereals/Shree Anna, by offering a higher MSP for these crops,' the government said.
During the period 2014-15 to 2024-25, procurement of paddy was 7,608 LMT while during the period 2004-05 to 2013-14, procurement of paddy was 4,590 LMT.During the period 2014-15 to 2024-25, procurement of 14 kharif crops was 7,871 LMT while during the period 2004-05 to 2013-14, procurement was 4,679 LMT.During the period 2014-15 to 2024-25, MSP amount paid to paddy growing famers was Rs. 14.16 lakh crore while during the period 2004-05 to 2013-14, amount paid to farmers was Rs. 4.44 lakh crore.
During the period 2014-15 to 2024-25, the MSP amount paid to 14 kharif crops growing famers was Rs. 16.35 lakh crores while during the period 2004-05 to 2013-14, MSP amount paid to farmers was Rs. 4.75 lakh crore.
India has three cropping seasons: Summer, Kharif, and Rabi. Kharif crops, sown during June-July and dependent on monsoon rains, are harvested in October-November. Rabi crops, sown in October-November, are harvested from January, depending on their maturity. Summer crops are produced between the Rabi and Kharif seasons. Bihar: Team of over 700 scientists to reach out to farmers under 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan'
Patna: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan' (Developed Agriculture Resolution Campaign), scientists and experts have embarked on a mission to impress upon the villagers about changing patterns in agriculture and also about the need to bring reforms in the sector. In Bihar's Samastipur, a team of 720 scientists have been formed by Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, which, along with 1756 agricultural officers, has visited 993 villages so far. The team of scientists reached out to 96,475 farmers, listened to their problems and also told them the 'solutions'. Speaking at a recent event, PM Modi had said, 'The monsoon is approaching, preparations for the Kharif season are underway, and during the next 12 to 15 days, over 2,000 teams comprising scientists, experts, officials, and progressive farmers will be visiting villages across the country. These teams will reach out to millions of farmers in more than 700 districts.' 'In today's rapidly changing times, there is a need to bring comprehensive reforms to Indian agriculture. Our farmers have filled food reserves by producing record yields. However, markets are evolving, and consumer preferences are changing. Therefore, this is a humble effort to bring about changes in the agricultural system by working together with farmers and state governments. The goal is to modernise Indian agriculture, and for that, this campaign aims to initiate direct discussions with farmers,' he added. The campaign, led by Dr PS Pandey, Vice Chancellor of Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, is set to run till June 12. The Vice Chancellor said that for a prosperous country, farmers have to be prosperous, and in view of this, Sankalp Abhiyan has been started by the Prime Minister. Under the campaign, teams of agricultural scientists are visiting different villages and directly communicating with farmers, listening to their problems and also suggesting solutions. He said that 174 teams have been formed in Bihar and Jharkhand, which will reach out and communicate with close to 1 lakh, while 130 teams are working in Bihar, which have to reach out to 6,45,000 farmers. He informed that 38 teams have been formed by Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa, through 16 agricultural science centres in 13 districts, whose target is to communicate with 1,90,000 farmers.

"Terror aid must end": Ravi Shankar Prasad asks EU to hold Pakistan accountable
Brussels [Belgium], June 5 (ANI): BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, leading an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation, emphasised the need for the global community to hold Pakistan accountable for sponsoring terrorism during a meeting with Christel Schaldemose, Vice-President of the European Parliament in charge of Asia. 'The Vice-President of the European Parliament heard us... We conveyed to her the situation in India about terrorism... We have requested some cost to the terror machine in Pakistan in terms of world aid. We have been deeply impressed by her love for India and the issues of humanity and democracy,' Prasad said following the meeting. The meeting in Brussels was part of India's wider diplomatic outreach aimed at mobilising international support in its fight against terrorism. The delegation also briefed the Vice-President on the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and reiterated India's zero-tolerance policy against terrorism. Echoing this, the Indian Embassy in Belgium and Luxembourg tweeted, 'All-Party Parliamentary delegation had a productive and constructive meeting with Ms. Christel Schaldemose, Vice-President of the European Parliament in charge of Asia. A good opportunity to brief at the senior parliamentary level on the use of cross-border terrorism as an instrument of state policy to disrupt progress in Kashmir and communalise the situation. Condemnation of the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam and appreciation for India's firm policy of zero-tolerance on terrorism.' The meeting also focused on strengthening diplomatic ties and enhancing cooperation between India and the European Union on strategic issues. 'There was unanimity in support for action against terrorism, and they were the first to convey solidarity to India,' he said. 'India is a stabilising country, a big country, a democratic country, and there has to be a collective resolve in the fight against terrorism, for human values, democracy, and humanity. That was the essence of the discussions.' The all-party delegation includes BJP MPs Daggubati Purandeswari and Samik Bhattacharya, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Congress MPs Ghulam Ali Khatana and Amar Singh, former Union Minister MJ Akbar, and former Ambassador Pankaj Saran. This diplomatic initiative follows Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 as India's military response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam by Pakistan-sponsored militants, which claimed 26 lives. In the wake of the attack, the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, killing over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
