Centre approves deployment of 350 Sagar Mitras in AP under PMMSY to aid coastal fishers
This was disclosed by George Kurian, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, in a written reply to a query in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
According to the State government, 317 Sagar Mitras are currently active across 12 districts, with Srikakulam on top with 55, and Vizianagaram having 11 at the bottom. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) is aiding Andhra Pradesh's marine fishers by providing Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) advisories.
These advisories are shared through NGOs and NABHMITRA mobile app. Additionally, fishers receive Potential Fishing Zone updates via voice messages and IVRS. Over 1.23 lakh fishermen across districts, with Kakinada topping the list with 26,571, benefit from this initiative.
Under PMMSY, fishers are covered by a Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS), offering Rs 5 lakh for death or permanent total disability, and Rs 2.5 lakh for permanent partial disability.

404 sheep killed by train while fleeing wild animal attack
Ara: A flock of sheep fleeing an attack by wild jackals and stray dogs died after being struck by a train near Sikariya Halt, between Banahi and Bihiya railway stations in Bhojpur district. Our flock of around 600 sheep, belonging to seven shepherds from Bankat village under Bihiya police station, was tethered in an agricultural field. When heavy rain began, wild jackals and stray dogs attacked. Frightened, the sheep bolted towards the nearby railway track. More than 400 were run over by a speeding train, and several others were injured," said shepherd Bharat Pal, speaking alongside six other affected herders. The shepherds estimated each sheep's value at around Rs 8,000, meaning the loss from the death of 404 animals was substantial. Sheep rearing is their sole source of income. Shahpur MLA Rahul Tiwari visited Bankat village, promising to seek compensation for the affected families and offering them some financial assistance. A govt veterinary doctor from Bihiya treated several injured sheep on Saturday morning and carried out a post-mortem on one. A team from Ara railway police also visited the site and began an investigation.

Village-led forest guards protect Buruma jungle in Jharkhand's Khunti for over 100 years
RANCHI: In one of its kind initiatives taken towards conservation of forests since ages, a meeting of Gram Sabha is held every year, during which a group of forest guards are appointed to protect the Buruma jungles under Murhu block of Khunti. Out of the seven revenue villages under Hetegoa Panchayat, a Gram Sabha is held in each of the four villages, to which this Buruma Forest belongs to, deputing one person from each of the households who will protect the forests from felling of trees. And if any one of those appointed persons fails to discharge his duties properly, he is imposed a fine ranging from Rs 150-200, depending upon the decision taken by the respective Gram Sabha. Buruma forest is spread over about 400 acres around four villages of Murhu block area. According to Mukhiya Jagmohan Singh Munda, this is a unique initiative taken to protect the forests which was taken long back by the Gram Sabha in the wake of rampant deforestation taking place in the area. They have been protecting the forest without any government help. The Mukhiya informed that they have been protecting their forests traditionally, but some changes have been made as per the requirement. People found cutting trees are imposed a fine of Rs 5000 by the Gram Sabha. 'Those appointed by the Gram Sabha for the protection of forests have the responsibility to protect the forests from felling of trees and theft from the jungles. Earlier, people from the adjoining villages used to cut the trees and take along with them without any obstruction due to which forests were diminishing. When the matter came to the notice of the Gram Sabha, it was decided to protect the forests and appoint people from within the village for the same,' said Mukhiya Jagmohan Singh Munda.

Delhi to get Rs 1.8 crore heritage-style clock tower at Mandir Marg–Shankar Road junction, to be city's new landmark
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena will lay the foundation stone for a new clock tower at the intersection of Mandir Marg and Shankar Road. Costing Rs 1.8 crore and expected to be completed in six months, the tower will blend Mughal, Rajput, and colonial architectural styles. NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council's (NDMC) much-awaited project of constructing a clock tower will finally see progress. The Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who conceived the project last year, will lay the foundation stone for the clock tower at the intersection of Mandir Marg and Shankar Road on Monday. It will be a gateway to the NDMC area, according to the council. The project will cost Rs 1.8 crore and will be completed in a period of six months. The tower design will represent a blend of Mughal, Rajput, and colonial architectural elements and is part of a heritage revival initiative in Delhi, stated the council. It will bear brick cladding (wire-cut bricks) with neatly finished joints per the architectural pattern," as per the project plan. To give an aesthetic look, there will be a pedestal stone finish given with black granite of 50 mm thickness, mechanical anchors, and other advanced engineering specifications added to the tower. Provision for stainless steel staircases will be made for internal tower maintenance. It will have a non-slippery finish and handrails made of stainless steel. "Further, there will be stone engraving done on the façade area with proper polishing to highlight the architectural drawings. Provision for enough lighting and electrical works will be done to highlight this place," as per the plan. The certified clock to be installed at the tower will bear a state-of-the-art design, have long durability, weather resistance, illumination in backlit and front-lit, and mounting with the latest technology with vibration resistance fittings for fixing. The clock tower will enhance the cultural landscape, attract visitors, and add to the skyline in Lutyens' Delhi, stated the council. NDMC initiated a search for a suitable location to erect a clock tower following Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena's inspection in April 2024. Thereafter, the NDMC got the soil of the proposed location tested for building the clock tower via a private agency, and the soil was found suitable for building the clock tower structure. The proposal was earlier sent to the DUAC in 2024 as building a clock tower in that part of the city required amendments to the layout plan. The commission, after seeking some specific details, including technical ones, gave its consent. The new site will be operated by a vendor through proper selection and based on proven national expertise. Previously, the 'New Delhi Town Hall' featured a clock tower atop its headquarters, but the structure was demolished in the 1980s to make way for the present building. "The Old Town Hall was built in 1933, and it was inaugurated by the Viceroy Lord Willingdon. Thereafter, four giant bells were imported from Britain, and these were installed at the tower of the Town Hall. There were timekeepers deployed to ring the bells every hour since wristwatches were not that common. However, in the 1960s, these bells were replaced with modern clocks," the official said.
