Demolish SWD obstructions, ensure smooth flow of water: Karnataka DyCM DK Shivakumar
BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Bengaluru Development, DK Shivakumar, instructed officials to clear all stormwater drain (SWD) encroachments under the Disaster Management Act to ensure smooth flow of rainwater in the drains.
During his visit to Manyata Tech Park, an official from a private firm tried to interrupt and offered to give justification.
Irritated by this, Shivakumar warned and said, 'I will demolish and go. I have come here to listen. Opportunity will be given to you to speak, do not interrupt.'
The DCM later told the media that the private owners did not cooperate with officials and created trouble for them and, hence, he has to come to check the flooding points.
'The CM and I have already visited the rain-affected areas. Manyata Tech Park is an important junction and any issues here result in problems in other areas. Some people have brought a stay from the court to stop the encroachments removal drive. We have asked officials to clear encroachments under the Disaster Management Act," he added.
When asked about repeated flooding during heavy rains in Bengaluru, he said, the government is not keen to take away property and give trouble to the public.
'I am visiting the problem spots myself to verify. I have been directed to give notices. We will also give compensation. The flooding should not be repeated and the demolition will be taken up under Disaster Management Act,' he stressed.
He added, 'We don't want to demolish any random building but it is important to ensure that rainwater flows smoothly without causing floods. We can't allow Bengaluru's reputation to go down the drain. We will compensate the building owners if there are technical issues. We have given complete authority to the BBMP Commissioner and the Urban Development Department Secretary to take necessary action in this regard.

Hemavathy canal protest: FIR against 3 MLAs, 2 religious heads
TUMAKURU: The Gubbi police have booked three legislators and two religious heads among others for Saturday's protest opposing the Hemavathy Express canal, a pet project of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. FIRs were registered against 11 people, including Turuvekere MLA MT Krishnappa of JDS, Tumakuru Rural MLA B Suresh Gowda and city MLA GB Jyothiganesh, both from BJP. The FIRs mentioned two khavi-wearing persons (religious heads), but did not name them. Some non-bailable charges were also included in the FIRs as one of the police personnel was severely injured. On Friday, thousands of people protested and blocked the Bengaluru-Shivamogga-Honnavara NH-206 at the project site at Sunkapura in Gubbi taluk. They set tyres on fire besides deflating the tyres of KSRTC buses, creating inconvenience to passengers. Shivakumar claimed that 40% of the work has been completed and the Rs 1,500 crore project cannot be stalled at this stage. It's being implemented after the technical committee submitted its report, Tumakuru district in-charge and Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara claimed. Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti V Somanna had written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to stop the project, calling it 'unscientific'. Congress MLA from Gubbi ST Srinivas on Sunday said he too will oppose the project. 'I will meet Shivakumar and raise the issue as the project will affect farmers of Tumakuru district,' he told reporters. 'Attempt to murder inspector' In a separate FIR, BJP leader Dilip Kumar and his supporters Rakesh, Koushik and hundreds of others were booked on charges of attempt to murder under Section 109 of BNS. Turuvekere Police Circle Inspector Lohith BN was injured severely in stone throwing. He was shifted to Siddaganga hospital in Tumakuru.

Don't indulge in CSR fraud: DK Shivakumar to corporate entities
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar on Saturday warned corporate entities operating in the state not to indulge in committing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fraud. He made the statement during a review meeting on Saturday at Vidhana Soudha, held to assess state-wide progress with Deputy Commissioners and CEOs. Deputy CM Shivakumar pointed out that many corporate entities based in Karnataka are issuing CSR cheques to private service organisations (NGOs) in other states, and are allegedly taking back around 50 per cent of the amount in cash. This development has come to the notice of the government, he called this a fraudulent practice and stated that such misuse of Karnataka's share of CSR funds is unacceptable. 'It is your responsibility to ensure these funds are used for the development of our schools,' he told the officials.'We don't need CSR funds in cash. Instead, let the companies build one public school per three Gram Panchayats. If land is required, the government will provide it. You identify the land, we will provide the school design. Let the companies construct the buildings and provide infrastructure. Their name can be displayed on the school building alongside the government's,' he proposed. The state receives around Rs 8,000 crore annually through CSR funds. A year ago, directions were issued to utilise these funds for constructing CSR model schools. However, the implementation has been unsatisfactory, Shivakumar noted. He expressed strong displeasure over the slow progress in the construction of CSR-funded public schools in Karnataka, modelled after the Karnataka Public Schools added, 'In my constituency, we are constructing 13 CSR public schools, each costing Rs 9 to Rs 12 crore. But work is progressing only in a few locations, and most places show a complete lack of interest.'

"Congress did more for Bengaluru's development than any other party": Karnataka Dy CM Shivakumar
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 1 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on Sunday that Rs 1 lakh worth of projects have been planned for the development of Bengaluru city, while stating that the 'Congress party had done more for Bengaluru's development than other parties.' Shivakumar was speaking at a meeting of Dasarahalli Assembly constituency leaders and workers, where he highlighted the developmental plan for the country's tech capital. 'Bengaluru city's population has grown from 70 lakh to 1.5 crore in the last 20 years, and hence we have formulated projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore for the development of the city. It was not the BJP that built the flyover on Tumkur Road, Airport Road, Hosur Road and Kolar Road. It was the Manmohan Singh government that granted these projects,' Shivakumar said. 'We have formed the Greater Bengaluru Authority to cater to the needs of the growing city. After a meeting with the MLAs and ministers, we will decide the number of corporations. We will hold elections once the corporations are formed,' he added. Talking about the promise of delivering on the guarantee schemes, an election promise of the party, Shivakumar added, 'When I took oath as the KPCC President, I had said that the Congress party will come to power if the youth and women of the state make up their mind. We came to power, and we decided to repay their debt through five guarantee schemes. Our government has delivered as promised.' Hitting out at the BJP, Shivakumar said that the opposing party is 'about more noise and little action.' 'The BJP was in power in the state before us for 4 years, yet never came up with any schemes like guarantee schemes. BJP is about more noise and little action. Our candidate Manjanna had lost the election here, yet he has got e-khatha done for 8,000 families,' he said. Earlier today, Shivakumar also highlighted the Express Link Canal project, saying that the project would continue despite protests. He said that 40 per cent of the work had already been completed, and there was no reason to halt the project at this stage. He said, 'Forty per cent of the work of the Express Link Canal project has been completed. In this situation, there is no reason to stop the work,' Shivakumar told reporters at Vidhana Soudha while addressing concerns over the Hemavati Link Canal project.' (ANI)
