Fadlu David's Simba scheme Stellies' Confed semifinal downfall
Simba FC's South African coach Fadlu Davids schemed their progression to the 2024-25 Caf Confederation Cup final, and the elimination of Stellnebosch FC, with Sunday's 0-0 semifinal second leg draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The result in Durban saw the Tanzanian side progress 1-0, after that was the score in Zanzibar City in the first leg last Sunday. Stellies had their chances, but Simba were disciplined in limiting those and frustrating the home side with an effective stifling game.
The result brought to an end the stirring run of coach Steve Barker's ambitious Stellenbosch, making their first foray into continental football, where they stunned defending champions Zamalek in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 away win after a goalless draw at home.
It also denied South Africa a second club from their three semifinalists after Mamelodi Sundowns reached their second Caf Champions League last match since winning that competition in 2016 with their upset 1-1 semi second-leg draw against Al Ahly in Cairo on Friday to progress on away goals.

Evan Roos called up to Springbok squad
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus on Sunday added Stormers No 8 Evan Roos to his squad for the matches against the Barbarians and the Incoming Series, increasing the size of his group to 55 players. Roos, who attended the first alignment in Cape Town in February, has run out seven times in the green and gold. His last Test was against Portugal in Bloemfontein in 2024, before he was sidelined for several months due to shoulder surgery. CHAMPION Gerda Steyn clinched her fourth Comrades Marathon women's title with a dominant performance on Sunday, showcasing her ultra marathon dominance in South Africa once more. Picture: Henk Kruger Independent Media A TACTICAL masterclass is what South African Comrades Marathon runner Gerda Steyn produced in landing her fourth title on Sunday. Even when Elizabeth Mukoloma pulled away at a blistering pace from her in the early stages, Steyn kept her composure, and once she reclaimed the lead, she held that position all the way to the 'down run' finish line at the People's Park in Durban. The result confirmed Steyn's status as the dominant force in ultra marathon running in South African with her third consecutive title, her maiden win came in 2019. She crossed the line in five hours, 51 and 19 seconds (5:51:10). While the latter stages of the race became somewhat of a grind for her. Steyn did seem to have her struggles but she managed her fatigue once again. Alexandra Morozova finished in second (5:55:56) and provided a serious challenge, but did not have the legs to catch Steyn ultimately. Steyn started at a steady pace, and was content to let Elizabeth Mukoloma lead the way in the early on. Earlier, in a first for the Comrades Marathon, the elites went off 15 minutes ahead of the rest of the field in what was an attempt to alleviate some of the congestion of runners at the start.
