PM launches Kashmir train, Mehbooba and Mirwaiz urge release of Kashmiri prisoners

Srinagar, June 6 (UNI) As Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat Express connecting Katra with Srinagar, Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti and Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq welcomed the improved connectivity but appealed Centre to release Kashmiri prisoners ahead of Eid for healing and justice. PDP chief Mehbooba welcomed the launch of Vande Bharat connecting Kashmir to Jammu via rail and said this long-awaited step promises ease for commuters & boosts connectivity in our region. The former chief minister urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to show statesmanship by releasing Kashmiri youth and political detainees. 'On the solemn occasion of Eid Al Adha, I urge Hon'ble PM to consider releasing Kashmiri youth jailed on mere suspicion post the Pahalgam attack. The collective condemnation of the incident by people across the political spectrum reflects our shared rejection of violence. It's time to show statesmanship and compassion, especially towards those languishing in jails across India without serious charges. Let this Eid be a moment of healing and reconciliation,' she said in a statement. Addressing the Friday congregation at Srinagar's historic Jamia mosque in old Srinagar, Mirwaiz, who is also Kashmir's chief cleric, called for the release of prisoners on Eid-ul-Adha as a goodwill gesture. He said that for thousands of families in J&K, the Eid festival brings more pain than joy. 'Their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers have been incarcerated for years—many without trial—in jails within and outside J&K. And each passing day, more of our youth are detained,' he said. Mirwaiz said that all such prisoners, including political leadership, remain in the prayers and thoughts of the people. 'If the Prime Minister truly seeks to reduce the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) which he often mentions in his speeches, then such humanitarian steps are the real way forward. Train links are welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure,' Mirwaiz said. Kashmir's chief cleric also termed the death of Zubair Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Srinagar, under mysterious circumstances in New Delhi on Monday deeply disturbing. While Zubair's family claimed their son was killed in Delhi, police in Delhi said there was no 'indication of foul play' in his death. UNI MJR BD

Delhi Court extends judicial custody of Tahawwur Rana till July 9

New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) A Delhi court on Friday extended the judicial custody of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana till July 9. Special Judge Chander Jit Singh after the hearing extended the judicial custody of Rana, who was produced before the court through video conferencing (vc) after expiry of his earlier judicial custody. In this matter, Tihar Jail Authorities had been permitted earlier by the court to file its response to the application of Rana seeking to talk with his family members. The application of Rana will be considered by the court on June 9. The National Investigation Agency filed its reply on the application of Rana and also supplied its copy to the Jail Authorities on the direction of the Court. Tahawwur Rana, a 64-year-old Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman, is said to be a close associate of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks main conspirator David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen. The court had earlier also dismissed the application of Rana seeking to talk with his family members. A group of 10 Pakistani terrorists went on a rampage in Mumbai in November 2008, carrying out a coordinated attack on a railway station, two luxury hotels and a Jewish centre, after they sneaked into the metropolis using the sea route in the Arabian Sea. About 166 people were killed due to this assault. Rana is accused of conspiring with Headley and operatives of designated terrorist organisations to carry out the three day-long terror siege of India's financial capital. The US Supreme Court earlier this year dismissed the review petition of Rana, against his extradition and cleared the way for his transfer to Indian custody. UNI XC RN

Shashi Tharoor asked by his son about Pak involvement in Pahalgam terror attack

Washington, June 6 (UNI) Congress MP Shashi Tharoor who is leading an all-party delegation to the US, was asked a question by his son Ishan about Pakistan's denial of any involvement in the Pahalgam terror attack. Ishaan Tharoor wanted to know from his father whether any country had asked for evidence of Pakistan's involvement in the attack on April 22 and about Pakistan's consistent denial of its involvement in the attack. "Have any of your government interlocutors asked you to show evidence of Pakistan's culpability in the initial attack ? And what do you say to the repeated Pakistani denials of having any hand in the initial attack ?' Ishaan asked. Shashi Tharoor said India would not have retaliated the way it did if there was not convincing evidence against Pakistan. "I'm very glad you raised this. I didn't plant it, I promise you. Very simply, no one had any doubt, and we were not asked for evidence. But the media have asked in two or three places. Let me say very clearly that India would not have done this without convincing evidence. But there were three particular reasons I want to draw your attention to all of you. "The first is that we've had a 37-year pattern of repeated terror attacks from Pakistan, accompanied by repeated denials. I mean,Americans haven't forgotten that Pakistan didn't know, allegedly, where Osama bin Laden was until he was found in a Pakistani safe house right next to an army camp in a cantonment city. That's Pakistan. Mumbai attacks- they denied having anything to do with we know what Pakistan's all about. "They will dispatch terrorists, they will deny they did so until they're actually caught with red hands..." Shashi Tharoor said. UNI XC RB SSP
