RM10 million lawsuit for Warisan defectors, warns Shafie

PUTATAN (June 17): Warisan President Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Shafie Apdal has issued a stern warning that any candidate fielded by the party in the upcoming 17th Sabah state election who defects will face a RM10 million lawsuit.
'If anyone defects, I will haul them to court and sue them for RM10 million,' said Shafie. 'In this coming election, any candidate I field — if they act against the party or the law — I will take legal action. This is important for us.'
Speaking to the media during a visit to the Kampung Petagas and Jalan Bukit Vor fire victims currently housed at Dewan Sri Putatan on Tuesday, Shafie said the party is fully prepared in line with the Anti-Hopping Law passed in 2022.
He expressed confidence that Warisan could reclaim the Petagas seat in the upcoming polls. 'We know this area is winnable … but we cannot be complacent or overconfident,' he said.
Warisan previously secured the Petagas constituency during the 2020 Sabah state election. However, in February 2023, its assemblyman Datuk Awang Ahmad Awang Sahari left the party to join Gagasan Rakyat.
Shafie emphasized the importance of strong, principled candidates and noted that while party machinery plays a role, integrity and leadership matter more.
He also highlighted a significant demographic shift: 65 percent of voters now consist of youth, as those aged 18 and above are automatically eligible to vote.
'It is crucial to understand their preferences and the trends they follow. They're not just interested in politics — they want real change. They don't want party-hoppers,' he stressed.
While acknowledging that many have shown interest in contesting, Shafie reminded that the election is not just about popularity but about regaining the mandate to govern.
'If we don't adopt the mindset that the people need genuine leadership, Sabah will continue to face many problems,' he warned.
Shafie expressed frustration over Sabah's persistent issues, including corruption and water supply failures.
'The money is there — but where has it gone?' he asked.
He called for visionary leadership that can deliver real solutions. 'We must listen to the people — not just ourselves. If we only hear our own voices, we're the only ones who feel satisfied.'
'I'm not a millionaire, but I believe leadership is what we need to lift Sabah out of poverty and help the oppressed in this resource-rich state.'
When asked if Warisan would contest all 73 state seats, Shafie said: 'We are with the people. We will assess the situation. I will make the announcement at the right time, depending on the political climate.'
'What matters most is that we regain the power,' he said.
Regarding the timing of the state assembly's dissolution, he said it is not his concern. 'That's up to the Chief Minister. I don't want to listen to when he'll dissolve (the government) — yesterday, last month — I don't care. What I'm doing is preparing. Don't wait for the rain to come.'
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor recently hinted that an announcement could follow the Gagasan Rakyat General Assembly at the end of July.

Warisan sets RM10 million surety bond for its election candidates

Published on: Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 18, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad Text Size: Shafie visiting the fire victims. PUTATAN: Parti Warisan has set a RM10 million surety bond for its candidates in the coming 17th state election to prevent defections and other violations. Party President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the condition ensures winning candidates face legal action if they breach party rules, including party hopping. Advertisement 'We need to match grassroots voters' preferences because candidates are crucial. They will be scrutinised, as 65 per cent of voters everywhere are young people,' he told reporters after visiting fire victims at Dewan Sri Putatan, Tuesday. 'Second, do not jump parties. That is the criteria we have set. Although we know the Anti-Hopping Act exists, I am prepared. If anyone jumps, I will take them to court for RM10 million,' he said. The former Chief Minister and Senallang Assemblyman acknowledged many are interested in candidacy, but pointed out that the primary focus is on commitment to serve the people. 'Many are eager to become candidates, but for me, this election is not about appeasing feelings. We want to take power. The people need leadership capable of solving various problems,' said Shafie, who expressed shame over politicians' tarnished reputation due to corruption and water supply issues. On the five per cent Sales and Service Tax (SST) expansion in July, Shafie voiced concerns about its direct impact on Sabahans. 'I have raised this in Parliament. My worry is price increases that will burden society. When SST is implemented, I hope the Government takes cost-saving measures in national financial management,' he said, noting the country's expenditure has reached RM400 billion. He called for preventing leakages and avoiding non-priority spending, urging the Government to play its role in addressing the issue. During his visit to the 27 families affected by two separate fires in Putatan, Shafie reiterated his previous proposal for a permanent disaster relief centre, similar to one established in Beaufort. 'Temporary placements like halls can only be used for three days. After that, victims must find elsewhere. 'If they stay with relatives, it can cause long-term social effects,' he said, pointing out the need for a permanent facility to house disaster victims temporarily while they secure new accommodation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Defect and face RM10mil suit, Warisan's election hopefuls warned

Warisan president Shafie Apdal said over 65% of the party's candidates for the upcoming Sabah polls will comprise younger candidates. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Warisan plans to file a RM10 million suit against any of its assemblymen who hop parties after winning seats under the party's banner in the upcoming Sabah state election. Party president Shafie Apdal said Warisan's candidates would be made to sign a moral and legal agreement to state their loyalty and commitment to the party until the end of their term, if elected. 'I have prepared a preventive measure. If any candidate who wins on a Warisan ticket leaves the party, we will take them to court and sue them for RM10 million. 'Every candidate nominated must understand and agree to this condition (in order to be fielded as a Warisan candidate),' he said, according to Sinar Harian. Shafie said there was a need for such a proactive measure despite the enactment of Sabah's anti-hopping legislation, as party hopping has often threatened the Bornean state's political stability. The former chief minister added that many had expressed interest to contest in the state polls representing Warisan, but said over 65% of the party's candidates would comprise younger candidates. In 2023, Warisan had said they would file a compensation claim against 11 assemblymen who defected from the party to back the ruling state government. The 11 who quit Warisan after the 2020 state polls are Yusof Yacob (Sindumin), Hassan A Gani Pg Amir (Sebatik), Peter Anthony (Melalap), Juil Nuatim (Limbahau), Mohamaddin Ketapi (Segama), Rina Jainal (Kukusan), Norazlinah Arif (Kunak), Mohammad Mohamarin (Banggi), Chong Chen Bin (Tanjong Kapor), Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari (Petagas) and Hiew Vun Zin (Karamunting).

Warisan candidates who betray party will face RM10mil penalty, warns Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: Warisan candidates contesting in the upcoming Sabah state election who act against the party's direction will face a RM10mil penalty, says Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. The Warisan president said this was part of the party's move to ensure only committed individuals are chosen to contest, especially in critical seats. "All candidates fielded this time, if they make any move that is not in line with the party's direction, I will sue them – RM10mil. "We cannot allow candidates to win under our banner and then jump," he said when met by reporters after his visit to the site of a recent fire at Kampung Dopo, Petagas, Tuesday (June 17). Warisan won 23 seats in the 2020 Sabah Election but saw its strength significantly reduced after 10 of its assemblymen defected to other parties. The party later gained two former DAP representatives from Elopura and Sri Tanjong and now holds 14 seats in the Sabah state assembly. Meanwhile, Shafie said Warisan had closely studied the electoral roll. "We're looking at the trends – their age, where they're inclined, what they like. More than 65% of voters now are young people," he said.
