Former Patriots QB comments on new offensive scheme for Drake Maye
There have been some concerns over Maye being the right fit for the way McDaniels has called the offense in the past for New England. However, Zolak believes the coach will make the necessary adjustments to adapt to what Maye does best.
'I know this for a fact. He will not force him to run the Brady offense,' Zolak said on 98.5 The Sports Hub. 'That was Tom's offense. They took that thing to another level. If Josh feels Drake is better off, terminology-wise, running a West Coast-style offense, Josh will move to that.'
'If Josh McDaniels feels Drake Maye is better with West Coast terminology, he'll move to that. He's not gonna force him to run Brady's offense.'@scottzolak saying 'for a fact' the plan is all about Drake Maye.
And speaking very highly of JMD in the process. @NBCSBoston pic.twitter.com/RJIGhrQwQE

A West Coast offensive system would focus on short passes to increase the efficiency of the ground game for the Patriots.
No one knows exactly what offensive system the team will install until McDaniels starts working with Maye. If anything, Maye's versatility as a passer and a playmaker with his legs could give McDaniels a chance to open up the offense even more.

Former Patriots Quarterback to Have College Number Retired
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. One of college football's greatest players is set to join rare company at Auburn. An announcement Monday revealed that former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton would have his college number retired this season. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 24: Cam Newton hosts the 4th&1 Draft Party at Smokey Stallion BBQ on April 24, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 24: Cam Newton hosts the 4th&1 Draft Party at Smokey Stallion BBQ on April 24, 2025 in Atlanta, news was first revealed in a post via the official X account of Auburn football. The post had over 100,000 views in just over an hour. Newton was not only a Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn, but he also led the Tigers to a National Championship victory over the Oregon Ducks in 2010. The best professional seasons of Newton's career undoubtedly came with the Panthers, highlighted by his MVP-winning season in 2015. That same season, he led Carolina to a 15-1 regular season and took them all the way to the Super Bowl. After nine seasons in Charlotte, Newton found a new home for one season in 2020, and that was with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Newton was a shell of himself while with the Patriots, but he was still able to produce at times. He finished his one season in New England with 2,657 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The majority of his production came on the ground, where he added 592 rushing yards to go along with 12 rushing touchdowns, the second-most of his career. Newton will be honored at Auburn on Oct. 11, when the Tigers host the Georgia Bulldogs. With Newton now having his number retired at the collegiate level, it is now time for the Panthers to follow suit and retire the number of the best quarterback in the short history of the franchise. Dricus Du Plessis' coach vows to fix problems and destroy 'blanket' Khamzat Chimaev
Dricus Du Plessis' coach is confident they can work on mistakes and get their belt back after UFC 319. Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) was dominated and outgrappled by Khamzat Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in Saturday's main event at United Center in Chicago. Du Plessis was never in serious danger of getting finished, but was held down in a crucifix position numerous times throughout the fight. He had no answer for Chimaev's wrestling, but Du Plessis' head coach Morne Visser won't give up on his star student. "Watch this space, guys," Visser told Submission Radio. "You've just maybe met the worst, worst losers ever in your life: Me and Dricus, and I'm not sleeping until we've got that belt back. I know everybody's laughing and say, 'Yeah, Dricus was exposed.' I'm a bad loser. Dricus is a bad loser. It's going to take whatever it takes for us to get that belt back – ASAP. "It's not going to be a long story. One fight and the belt. That's us back in the belt. So to all those naysayers, and all the guys who support blanket-style MMA, blanket wrestling, we're in the real fight game, and we'll be back again and surprise you of just taking that belt back again." Visser isn't looking for an immediate rematch after admitting that his fighter was dominated on the floor. He acknowledges that there's work to do in order to stop Chimaev's suffocating grappling approach, which saw him land 12 takedowns and have a whopping 21 minutes of control time. "I've been asked, 'Do you want him to do a rematch?' I said, 'Absolutely not,'" Visser said. "Obviously, we would like to fight him very soon again, but there is no way I'll take the rematch with us being a little bit behind in our Russian-style of wrestling. That is what it is – nothing else. He just knows how to control you on the floor. When Dricus punched him, he just wobbled. He just kicked him, he wobbled. That's why he went straight for shooting. "When you look at submission attempts and almost landed, it was done by Dricus, not by Khamzat. Khamzat was doing one thing and that's keeping the fight on the floor, and make sure the ref doesn't stand it up. ... In the meantime, we've got to fix our sh*t ASAP, and I know what to do. I know exactly what to do, and where to do it. It's a big change. We're going to have to make a big move to fix things. But I mean, if we had an extra minute, that fight would have been ours. So it is what it is, man – sad." With a plethora of eager contenders at middleweight, Visser doesn't want Du Plessis to jump into another fight either. He is keen on making improvements first. "Instead of spending time to prepare for going to another fight camp to prepare for (Reinier De Ridder), I would rather spend that time to fix the problem that we've got, and then go into a camp," Visser said. "I won't just take a fight because fights are available. I want to fix this problem because we're going to face Khamzat, and I want to destroy him this time."

Matthew Judon responds to fan about future return to Patriots
Veteran edge rusher Matthew Judon responded to a fan who pitched for the four-time Pro Bowler to return to the New England Patriots. The Patriots traded Judon to the Atlanta Falcons last year in the final year of his contract. It was a disappointing run with the NFC team for the defender, who only mustered 5.5 sacks in 17 game appearances. He hadn't experienced those kinds of lows since his rookie season, when he wasn't even a starter. One fan took to social media and pitched for the Patriots to bring Judon back to New England. The post included video highlights of Judon's run with the team. It's no secret that the Patriots could use some extra pass-rushing help on the edge. Judon responded by reposting the fan's message on his Instagram timeline. Judon is reportedly visiting the Miami Dolphins on Monday with expectations that he will sign with the team, according to KPRC 2's Aaron Wilson. In all likelihood, he will be returning to the AFC East, but it won't be with the Patriots. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
